Shelby County 4-H had 366 4-H members enrolled in 2018-2019. 4-H is growing in Shelby County and it’s because of 4-H families recruiting new members, spreading the word to others and great volunteers stepping up to help. Shelby County 4-H had 12 community clubs, 4 SPIN Clubs, 2 Cloverbud Clubs and 1 MCA Club. Highlights from the year included 15 workshops that helped 4-H’ers learn more about projects and increase their knowledge. Two craft day workshops and 4-H Fire-Up were led by Federation members, which enhanced their leadership and public speaking skills. Jim Sparks led a Robotics SPIN Club for a fourth year. Club members worked with the Lego Mindstorms Robots with a focus on learning basic programming (including flowcharting and math calculations) and working with sensors. The club had 10 members who met twice a month for four months. Shelby County 4-H had a team compete for a second year in a row at the State Robotics Competition. Team members included Summer Carruthers, Garrett Endsley, Matthew Horsman, Eli Sattler, Caitlynne Therieau and Claire Matheny. The team finished with the 14th highest in table run(robot performance) and 21st overall out of the 34 rookie teams that participated. The top rookie team’s score was 48.3 and our team’s was 33.7 only a separation of 14.6. Sparks said “I am quite proud of these brave young 4-H’ers as they stood their ground and proved themselves more than worthy!”
Shelby County 4-H had four clubs apply for Farm Credit Community Improvement Grants. Shelby County Cloverbuds grant focused on the community gardens in Shelbyville. Federation was able to purchase two new special needs swing for Forest Park in Shelbyville. The Findlay Feeders grant assisted in a community garden for Findlay residents. Strasburg Tailtwisters painted the dairy barn at the fairgrounds. Great job to everyone who helped with implementing these grants. Your hands were definitely put to larger service. Thank you to the 4-H leaders who are continuously working to make Shelby County 4-H Clubs strong in their community service work, leadership and public speaking opportunities. Our leaders are the heart of Shelby County 4-H and we couldn’t do it without them. Thank you to all the 4-H members and families for making 2018-2019 another great year in Shelby County 4-H!

Illinois 4-H challenges youth to try new things, experiment in project areas they may enjoy, and explore opportunities around the state and country. This is the third year for the Illinois 4-H Experience Recognition award. The Experience Award offers recognition for members who participate in activities and events. There are lots of activities you can do as a 4-H member ranging from club to national events. The award is based on four dimensions of experience: Participation, Community Service, Leadership and Project learning. The Bronze level award requires members meet 1 experience in each of the four dimensions. The Silver level award requires members meet 2 experiences in each of the four dimensions with at least two of those being at the county level or above. The Gold level award requires members to complete 4 experiences in each of the four dimensions with at least 2 of those experiences beyond the county level. This is the second year Shelby County 4-H members have participated in this awards program. There were a total of 34 applications submitted.

“My hands to larger service” was focused on by Shelby County 4-H Clubs and members during the 2018-2019 4-H year. Shelby County 4-H Federation challenged clubs and 4-H members with incentives: clubs were asked to do two community service projects and 4-H members were asked to complete three service activities.
Eight clubs met the goal including: Coldspring Copperheads, Findlay Feeders, Ful-O-Pep, John Jordan Jaybirds, Moweaqua Rustlers, Oconee Eager Beavers, Silver Spurs and Strasburg Tailtwisters.
There were 58 4-H members who qualified for the Community Service medal. 4-H members will receive their community service medal from their club leaders.
Thank you to everyone for all their hard work and giving back to their communities.
