Canyon Echoes

SEPTEMBER 2019

Canyon quilters continue to give of their time and talents. This last

month's Veterans' Philanthropy gathering was a perfect example. A

special shout out to Faye Dunnan spear headed the gathering that

produced dozens of quilts, kits, and comradery in support of our

Veterans transitional housing. What I find so impressive is that the

majority of our members volunteer of their time and talent to so

many organizations, including museums, the San Diego quilt show,

educational institutes, dog shelters, womens shelters, hospitals and a variety of organiza-

tions. We are an awesome group that certainily makes a positive impact on our com-

munity.

At our August meeting, we were tantalized with what is coming up in September. We

will be creating strawberry pin cushions and enjoying an English Tea. I’m so looking

forward to sipping tea on elegant china, place setting, and amazing deserts. Our team

of volunteers has been hard at work preparing for this event. There are only a limited

number of tickets for both the Make and Take and the Tea, so reserve yours now. More

information can be found on page 3 of this newsletter.

Suzi Parron will be at our meeting, telling us all about The Ameri-can Quilt Trail. About Suzi's book: Suzi Parron, in cooperation with Donna Sue Groves, documented the massive public art project known as the barn quilt trail in her 2012 book Barn Quilts and the American Quilt Trail Movement. The book is filled with color pho-tographs, this endearing hybrid of memoir and travelogue is for quilt lovers, Americana and folk art enthusiasts, or anyone up for a good story.

It was 101 degrees and went up to 113 before I left Las Vegas in the middle of August! Thank goodness for really strong A/C! You might wonder why I was there –unfortunately not to play – I was attend-ing two wholesale apparel shows (which was play actually!) for my website, www.blakelybcollections.com, formerly with South Park Dry Goods!

The shows, MAGIC and WINN covered 3 days and I saw so many styles and col-ors my head was spinning! The MAGIC show alone covered 1.6million square feet of space and over 100,000 buyers/owners from the all over the globe at-tended. (1)

Having attended these shows for the last 5 years I pretty much have honed in on where to go and what to look for, how-ever I try to find new vendors each year to add to my merchandise mix. I usually book appointments with vendors I con-sistently bring in and walk-in with others. They will show me the looks their design-ers are doing for the next Season. These shows were for Spring/Summer 2020 (S/S20). So check out the looks below to find out what to wear!

Some of the pictures will show garments facing you on a rolling rack….these are some of the ones I’m buying. I’m terrible at remembering to take pictures however, so this is just a peek of what will be show-ing up on the website in 2020.

OK…let’s see what’s up for Spring/Sum-mer!

Boho (Bohemian) looks have been strong for many past seasons and continue to show up for S/S20.

Dresses are the stars with tiered skirts in florals and stripes with muted pastels – many adorned with pompoms and tassels which will bring out the gypsy in you!

Neutrals are always a constant in each sea-son – prints vary and many are done with color blocking and striping effects. (2)

Strong Colors showing for S/S20 are Mustard, Persimmon, and Blush. (3)

Animal prints were everywhere! They were seen in all categories of apparel and accessories, abstract and realistically por-trayed.

The crop pant is copying hemlines by go-ing up and down! I’m bringing in UP! Pants again this season and I was inter-

ested to see a shorter crop. We’re familiar with the petal slit, the longer slit at the leg of our pants, but this season I saw ankle pants with a slightly longer back hem than front. The purpose was to show our pret-ty sandals and not be covered by the pant! Ingenious! Yes…I bought them too! (4)

Faux suede continues from Fall into Spring! The colors are soft neutrals (blush, greys, sables and creams) and em-bellishments such as a sophisticated use of studs (see dress) as well as color block-ing is used frequently.

Another fabric seen in sundresses was Washed silk. It also continues as a fabric used in many other styles for Spring.

Are you ready to wear a Romper? De-pending on the designer they will either be called Rompers or Jumpsuits… Many have elastic waists with easy to pull on comfort, in stripes and prints with easy to wear fabrics!

In summary – have fun dressing in what-ever pleases you, Boho, Leopard Prints or Rompers – it’s your FASHION!

Review of Denise Oyama Miller art quilting class

by Pamela Stricker

This August, Visions Art Museum sponsored a three-day art quilt class, Landscape Impressions from Photo to Finish by Denise Oyama Miller from Northern California.

Her work was featured in a show at Visions this spring. The technique is Oyama Miller's take on "confetti quilting," first made popular by Japanese quilter Noriko Endo in her work and book, Confetti Naturescapes: Quilting Impressionistic Landscapes. I am a long time fan of Endo's work and anticipated learning the "confetti" techniques firsthand.

Oyama Miller has some important and interesting differences and improvements to Endo's work. For example, She utilizes much more applique in her quilts which is also covered in the workshop. Also she focuses as well as incorporating free motion quilting for additional impact.

Denise's workshop was amazing. Her enthusiasm for confetti quilting is absolutely contagious. She started the class with a clear and easy to follow demonstration. Everyone seemed to know exactly how to get started. She then made the rounds talking to each of us and giving suggestions as we moved from photograph to rough sketch on our batting. She then checked back in with us through the day offering very helpful tips and techniques. Denise offered useful discussion of difficult to understand

concepts like value and contrast, essential for quality art quilting. She also distributed a well-thought-out handbook to each student, that's chock full of art instruction. Every day she made the rounds and checked in on each of us at least once, usually twice, as well as answering questions.

Everyone I spoke with commented on how her keen observations and suggestions on value/tone, contrast, placement etc. really improved their quilts. Every member of the class made significant progress, many if not all got to pinning and some got to the final quilting stage. Denise was a patient and thoughtful instructor and cheerleader to a wonderful group of women, many of whom have not before made an art quilt. She made what could be an intimidating process fairly painfree and delightful.

It's not easy to teach at many levels and over a three day period, I've taught for nearly 25 years and know that effective teaching is a challenging task. Denise Oyama Miller earns an A+.

Our August Canyon members’ meeting was a fun time for us to sit, sew for Vet-erans, be social, and get to know each other a little better. Thank you to every-one for your hand & machine sewing, designing, and cutting skills. The 6.5" squares you donated will be used for a scrappy quilt for a veteran.

Future sew-ins for veterans projects will be planned soon.

Fat Quarter Exchange is a wonderful opportunity to add to your stash, or gather fabric with a specific theme.

Every month you want to play, you bring fat quarters that match that month's theme. You get a ticket for each fat quarter you bring - the more fabric you bring, the more chances you have to win them all!

At the meeting, after the break, one ticket will be pulled and that lucky person will go home with all the fat quarters in the pot that month.

Fat Quarter Exchange Game is Back!

Greetings, once again, from Kennel Comforters and its furry friends who sleep and nap on the beds we make for their comfort. We thank all the kind souls who have donated materials and time to help us make it possible to pro-vide the county animal shelters, humane societies and rescue groups (at no cost to the shelters, etc.) beds for the shelter animals and homeless cats and dogs in San Diego county. These homeless ani-mals depend on all of us to help them find a permanent home and to have a warm bed to sleep in while they are waiting for that loving home.

In the month of August, Kennel Com-forters has been very busy sewing beds for shelter dogs and cats. At our recent sewing get-together in August (8/3 and 8/4), we produced 110 round beds for cats and small dogs and 32 mat beds for medium-large dogs. We totaled 142

beds for the month of August. We were very productive and had a good time, in-cluding a large group of volunteers who made the two days of sewing really fun. Having volunteers join us makes the ex-perience of making the beds extra fun. We make new friends and everyone who joins us for the first time enjoys the time they spent with the KC group. And, of course, “newbies” are always invited back, and they usually do join us for one of our sewing days.

If you would like to have some fun, try visiting the Kennel Comforters group for one or two days. We meet on the first Friday and Saturday of each month. We provide all the supplies you will need and you do not have to sew---we have other fun activities involved in making the beds.

Meeting location: North San Diego County Animal Shelter, 2481 Palo-mar Airport Road, Community Room, Carlsbad, (next to Lowe’s Home Center) first Friday and Saturday of each month.

Time: 9:30 a.m. to 3-4 p.m.For additional information, please check our website:kennelcomforters.comThank you, Merilyne Hickman (Volunteer)
