Mark Beringer, Beringer Vineyard’s chief winemaker, is Honorary Chair of the 2019 Cincinnati International Wine Festival. Mark’s great-great grandfather,

Jacob Beringer, cofounded Beringer Vineyards in 1875 as one of the first wineries in California’s Napa Valley. Mark describes his job as part farmer, scientist, artist, and showman.

Was there ever a question as to what your life’s work would be? I was for sure born into the business, but knowing that’s what I wanted to do came later. My dad had a li� le wine shop, and I was introduced to the business as a kid by stocking shelves, dusting wine bo� les, and packing shipments. When I graduated from high school, though, I had a music scholarship to California State University and thought I was headed toward playing trumpet in a symphony orchestra or large jazz band.

What changed your mind? I realized there were a lot of people who were a lot be� er than I was. I enrolled in Santa Rosa Junior College and came across viticulture

as an elective. I thought, my family has been doing this for a long time; maybe I should check it out. At some point I realized that I was far more interested in the ac-tual wine aspect of the business than the farming/grape-growing end of it. I eventually transferred to Fresno State and got a degree in enology.

Aft er years of working at several other winer-ies, you returned to Beringer in 2015 as chief winemaker� What exactly does a chief wine-maker do? One day you get to be a farmer tending to the vines, and then you transition to more [of a] scientist worried about fermentation, and that transitions into harvest and blending season, when you become an artist visualizing how things come together with infi nite pos-sibilities. The last is showman or the PR/marketing end of it—actually selling it. I am involved in all of those stages.

What are the latest technological innovations that Beringer uses? We have a state-of-the-art installation we just acquired. We can see fermentation taking place, whereas before you’d have to send some-body out there to draw a sample and take a reading with an instrument. Now we have pressure transducers in the tanks that measure the weight of the sugar. I can pull that information up on a computer screen and see the real-time curve of the fermentation.

Any advice for navigating the wine festival? Generally, the best way is to go through white wines you want to try fi rst, starting with aromatic whites, such as sauvignon blanc, and work up to chardonnays. Work up through lighter reds to bigger ones, such as the caber-nets and Bordeaux. Drink lots of water to keep hydrated and refresh your palate, and take time to eat.

When you get home from work, do you have a glass of wine? I taste 100 to 200 wines a day some-times. When I get home, I tend to have a Manha� an with Maker’s Mark.

Every year, all participating wineries are off ered the opportunity to submit their wines to be judged. This competition is considered the Olympics of the wine industry. Wineries have entered their best wines in hopes of achieving recognition for outstanding qual-

ity in the form of gold, silver, and bronze medals.Prior to the grand tastings, more than 400 wines are swirled, sniff ed,

sipped, and evaluated by trained judges. These judges are wine educators, culinary professionals, restaurateurs, wine retailers, certifi ed sommeliers, wine salespeople, and industry advocates. Our judges are committ ed to the integrity of the wine industry and the competition and att end a training pro-gram prior to the judging.

Each wine is tasted using a modifi ed blind format, which means that the type of grape and where it’s grown is revealed, but not the winery, wine name, or vintage. The judges use a 20-point grading scale to rate each wine on fi ve major categories: appearance, aroma and bouquet, taste and texture, fi nish and aft ertaste, and overall impression.

The behind-the-scenes staff works diligently to ensure the wines are pre-sented to the judges in the most professional manner. Riedel glassware is washed and hand-polished aft er each use. If any judge deems that a wine has “off ” aromas, another bott le is opened without question. The scoring sheets are collected, tabulated, and double-checked by an independent third party. The results are returned to the wine festival, and the medals are awarded. These rules are established to ensure absolute credible results, and the Wine Festival board and staff are committ ed to enforcing the rules to maintain the highest professional standards for the competition.
