of the Nevada Early Care and Education
Professional Career Ladder and establish a
set of standards for Early Care and
Education that support the professionalism
of our field.
CKAs form a knowledge base and provide a
foundation for self-assessment and reflection
that helps practitioners determine areas of
professional competence and areas for
further growth.
To learn more about CKA, the Career Ladder
and The Nevada Registry, visit with staff at
The Nevada Registry table in the Exhibit area
on Friday and Saturday.

Transformation by Design:
Powerful Possibilities for
Supporting Success What can we, as practitioners, do to reduce
unnecessary barriers and design programs and
services that support the success of the wide
range of variability in the families and children
we serve? How do we transform our practice
to improve outcomes for children, their
families, and the professionals who serve
them? Participants in this highly interactive
workshop will use the Universal Design for
Learning framework as a lens for examining
their professional practices and transforming
them by design.

Kevin Carnes, President of
Lakeshore Learning Materials,
has been with Lakeshore for
over 30 years, beginning in
Northern California when
Lakeshore was strictly a small,
California-based company.

expand nationwide, and in promoting Lakeshore’s
unique brand to educators around the world. After
college and prior to joining Lakeshore, Kevin was a
VISTA volunteer for over two years in the Omaha,
Nebraska area, working with the Head Start and Par-
ent Involvement community. Because of this experi-
ence, Kevin discovered and understood the value of a
quality early childhood education. Because of this un-
derstanding, Kevin has also been a workshop fea-

parents, by our teachers, by our
doctors. I was one of those kids - highly
obedient, don't question authority,
respect your elders. But then I gave
birth to a child with a disability, and
I knew that if I was going to be any type
of parent-advocate for her, all of that
training had to go out the window.
Together we have rebelled against
doctors, and teachers (my daughter is
making it her life's work to rebel against
ME), and together we are out here living
our best lives. Rebellion is sometimes a
really REALLY good thing. I'm going to
tell you why - and why you should con-
sider it. Leadership & Professional
