There have been some great games between St. Brendan’s and Causeway down the years with some titanic battles between the two back in 2013 when the Ardfert side last brought the Neilus Flynn back to the village.
Causeway have not won the Senior Hurling Championship since 1998 and its 11 years since they even contested the fi nal. Causeway will be raging hot favourites to reach the fi nal but St. Brendan’s just love being spoilsports and have the ammunition to rattle Causeway.
St. Brendan’s defeated Abbeydorney in extra-time in their opening match. They then had two gripping games against Crotta O’Neill’s just getting over the line in the replay.
Goalkeeper Darren Delaney has been in top form this year and his double save in injury time in that replay made a major contribution to his side’s victory.
Their defensive unit is very strong with Stephen Leen a solid full back while Killian Woulff and Fionán Horgan in the corners are tenacious and any scores garnered will be hard earned. Kevin Hannafi n has been a colossus at centre back and whenever they have been in trouble, they never have to dial 999, they just look to their inspirational leader and enforcer Darran Dineen and he always delivers.
Daithí Griffi n has a huge engine and can also contribute to the scoreboard and he
may well be joined by the returned Fionán MacKessey and this will strengthen St. Brendan’s.
John Egan may well be entering the twilight of his career but he is still a lethal marksman and Cian Hussey is starting to deliver on his underage brilliance which is not surprising because of his DNA. They may place Kieran Fitzgerald at the edge of
the square or Jerry Wallace so St. Brendan’s have plenty of scoring threats.
If St. Brendan’s weakness is a lack of depth in their panel that certainly cannot be said of their opponents Causeway. On the pitch they strangled the ‘Duff ers’, taking out their
main men by shrewd tactical match-ups. Playing essentially
with the very talented Jason Diggins at centre back as sweeper, Causeway could aff ord to release Bryan Murphy, now playing some of his best hurling, further upfi eld
without weakening the back line.
The return of Brandon Barrett from injury was a huge plus for Causeway.
His unerring accuracy from frees lays a warning down to the Ardfert team - foul and watch the scoreboard tick over very nicely. In front are two speed merchants in Colum Harty and Gavin Dooley along with Dan Goggin. Causeway was impressive in beating Kilmoyley and Ballyduff but was well beaten by Lixnaw.
VERDICT: It’s diffi cult to look beyond Causeway who appear to hold all the aces but they have been in this position over recent years and have failed to deliver so St. Brendan’s cannot be ruled out. PR

A repeat of last year’s epic fi nal with Lixnaw just surviving after Martin Stackpoole became the hero saving a Kilmoyley penalty which was then fi nished to the net but it was disallowed by the match offi cial who alleged that he had indicated the penalty strike was the last action.
It soured what was an epic encounter but both sides will have moved on and this semi-fi nal should be another slugfest between two heavyweights. There is no doubt that Kilmoyley, at their best, can give the current Neilus Flynn holders a real run for their money. Kilmoyley are boosted this year with the introduction of Matthew Flaherty and Barry O’Sullivan from Dingle has made a diff erence with Flaherty in particular proving himself a nuisance.
The return of Tom Murnane has proved a major boost for Kilmoyley while the return of Paudie O’Connor this year after his leg break has made a huge diff erence.
Maurice O’Connor and Daniel Collins are versatile in that they move around the middle third and can set-up as well as taking scores. Jordan Brick is mobile and a clinical fi nisher from out the fi eld and will take some watching. Joe McElligott and Robert Collins are two more good fi nishers so Kilmoyley are strong all round and previous form can be ignored.
After a heavy defeat to Causeway they struck 3-21 against O’Dorney. Just when it seemed they were on that upward curve they struggled to put away a Crotta side many of whose players had played for
Kerry U20s in that All Ireland fi nal and then the replay against St. Brendan’s on Bank Holiday Monday but they did pull well clear in extra time.
The 2018 champions, Lixnaw, moved into the semi-fi nals by the direct route and are nicely rested. They pummelled Ballyheigue by 22 points and then gave Causeway a good hosing by 10 points so they deserve the favourite tags.
Lixnaw have a young side and while their attack mainly Shane Conway grab the headlines, what has impressed most observers this year is their defence. Mike Quilter has made a huge diff erence at the back where John Griffi n is the glue that keeps the defence
rocklike and also the chief mop upper and his distribution is as
accurate as it was when he was one of Kerry’s fi nest. Brendan
Brosnan and Darragh Shanahan have been superb while keeper Martin
Stackpoole is brave and agile.
Shane Conway leads the attack and there is little than can be added except to say that Conway is one of the
best hurlers the county has produced, an exceptional talent who has dominated on a bigger stage. If Kilmoyley concede frees, Conway will punish them and from general play he is fearless. Kilmoyley will try and contain but that is all you can do. Conway also allows other players to have more space so John Buckley, Shane McElligott, Reggie Galvin, Jason Wallace and Colin Sheehy can all add to Lixnaw’s scoring threat.
VERDICT: Lixnaw get the nod an all known form but Kilmoyley will be thirsting for revenge for last year’s fi nal defeat so a win for the Lerrig side cannot be ruled out.PR

GROUND RULES & REGULATIONS1. All persons entering this ground are admitted only subject to the following Ground Regulations and to the Rules and Regulations of the Gaelic Athletic Association. Entry to the ground shall be deemed to constitute unqualified acceptance of all these Rules and Regulations.
2. Fireworks, smoke canisters, bottles, glass, cans, flags, banners, poles and other similar articles or canisters including which could or might be used as a weapon, are not permitted within the ground and any person in possession of such an article or container may be refused entry or ejected from the ground.
3. The consumption of intoxicating liquor is not permitted and spectators are not permitted to bring alcohol into the ground/area.
4. The climbing of pylons, stands or other buildings is not permitted.
5. Unnecessary noise such as that from the use of radio sets, air horns and behaviour likely to cause confusion or nuisance of any kind including foul or abusive language is not permitted in any part of the ground.
6. Under no circumstances is it permitted to throw any object on to the pitch.
7. Unauthorised persons are not permitted to enter on to the
field of play and may be ejected.
8. Any person who fails to comply with instructions from a Steward may be ejected from the ground.
9. In general, the Ground Management reserves the right of admission.
10. The Ground Management reserves the right to refuse admission or to eject any person who refuses to be searched by a member of An Garda Siochana.11. Any person who remains in a gangway may be ejected.
12. The GAA, event promoters reserve the right for its servants or agents to remove from the ground any person who does not comply with the Ground Regulations or whose presence on the ground could reasonably be construed as constituting a source of danger, nuisance or annoyance to other spectators.
13. All persons in the ground are reminded of their obligations under Section 18 (3) of the Fire Services Act, 1981, to ensure that behaviour does not present a danger from fire to anyone.
14. The Stand is a NO SMOKING AREA.
