Fe 16 P2 Hurling Championship Before a very good attendance Valley Rovers Under
16s lined out against Ballygarvan in Ballinora in the
much anticipated P2 Hurling Championship. At the
outset it was expected to be a cracker of a match and
did not disappoint. Before any score registered on the
score board two yellow cards were shown one for
each side in hotly contested opening half. Ballygarvan
got the first score, an opportunistic goal from a 21
yard free. Ballygarvan added another point before
Valleys settled getting their opening point from play
by Jacob O'Driscoll. Ballygarvan scored another point
but shortly afterwards Conor Calnan found the net to
put two points between the sides. Valleys drew the
match with a point from Ciarán McCarthy. The match
intensity continued to rise and a Ballygarvan shot on
goal initially saved ended up in the back of the net to
see Ballygarvan lead 2-04 to 1-02. Valleys continued to
work hard all over the field and as a result Jonathan
O'Leary found the net for Valleys ably assisted by an
excellent pass from Evan O'Shea. Valley Rovers upped
the intensity and added another point courtesy of a
free. Ballygarvan added their own point before
halftime making the score 2-5 to 2-3.
The second half got underway, the break not having
quelled anyone’s appetite for a win but it was Valleys
who worked harder and by the 50th minute Valleys
went ahead for the first time as a result of scoring
three points in a row without reply, two from frees
and an excellent point by Adam Casey. The shard of
daylight between the sides was short-lived however as
Ballygarvan found the net putting them 2 points ahead
again. Valleys refused to be deterred and continued to
work extremely hard throughout the field, contesting
every single ball. Again, this work resulted in two more
points scored by Valleys, one a stunning point from
play by Evan O'Shea. Ballygarvan scored their own
point in response but it was Valleys who continued to
work hardest which was further evidenced by a series
of play beginning with a well taken point from play by
Ciarán McCarthy. In the last five minutes Valleys
added two more points both from 65s. The score now

being 3-6 to 2-11. An excellent Ballygarvan
continued to plug away but fortune was not
favoring them and they missed their opportunity to
level the score in the dying minutes when they
missed two free -taking opportunities. Instead it
was Valley Rovers who added another point from a
free to win the first round on a scoreline of 2-12 to
Ballygarvan’s 3-06. The match was absolutely
electric and the intensity of the game was felt by all
in attendance. An exceptional team effort. Well
done all. Team:
