We support our clients by providing
insurance coverage when they take
their prestige and performance
vehicles for a spin on the track.
It’s important for our staff to also
understand how track events are
run so we encourage our team to
go along meet some of our clients
and have a fun day out!
Roger Scholes (our Technical Claims
Manager) is motorsport mad! Roger
attends many of the trackday events
around the country. Roger works
with the organisers to ensure the
management of the event meets
our criteria for insurance coverage.
Joanne Smith & Jazz Pickett (from
our Brand Support team) recently
attended track events at Hampton
Downs & Taupo with Roger, with
both getting to meet some of our
clients and ride in a few of the cars
we insure. Not only is this a great
experience for our team but also
increases their understanding of
motorsport, knowledge they can
impart onto our clients who are
interested in taking their cars on
the track!
Better work stories.
Here at Star Insurance we’re great fans of motorsport events around New Zealand.

Why brokers are important to Star Insurance Specialists.
Over the past two years we’ve conducted a lot of research, transformed our business and brands, developed a new brand strategy and launched new strategic projects. We’ve also faced increased competition and a few challenges.
New public ad campaigns coming your way.
Our purpose is:
Make Happiness Happen. We strive to do that daily for our brokers, their clients, our direct customers and ourselves.
We’ve come a long way from 1979
when John started John Baker
Insurance Brokers. Whilst running
the insurance brokerage back in
the 80s, John was asked why it
was so hard to insure bikers. After
completing his research, John
created the genesis to our niche
status as a specialist policy provider,
by producing a unique motorcycle
insurance policy. This became very
popular and we ended up servicing
all the big motorcycle clubs.
It was a privilege to be trusted by
other brokers who loved the policy
too and started recommending it
to their clients. We valued these
broker relationships, and to ensure
separation between our brokerage
and other brokers reselling the
John Baker Insurance Brokerage
policy, we moved a small team into
a newly formed separate company
- Star Underwriting Agents Ltd (Star
Insurance Specialists today).
From there, we kept adding niche
insurance products to our lineup
of products for Star Underwriting
Agents, all of which followed the
popularity of Star Motorcycle.
Ever since John sold his insurance
brokerage in 2007, he, Nick and our
current team of 30 specialists, are
focused entirely on Star Insurance
Specialists.
Trust works both ways
Clearly we have a solid foundation
and good history with brokers.
We understand and respect you
and appreciate how you operate.
We enjoy our relationships with you
and your clientele, and continue to
be grateful for the support over the
years that has helped us to become
New Zealand’s leading niche
insurance specialist.
One of the reasons our products
lead the market, is we don’t limit
use between private and business
use. Despite this, we’re still insuring
5
T H E Q U A R T E R L Y M A G A Z I N E F O R B R O K E R S A N D D E A L E R S
of motorcycles and caravans,
that are otherwise served by the
direct insurers, we can maintain
our specialist motor insurance
leadership. And if our marketing
directs some of this business your
way, that’s good from our point
of view.
We’re on the same team
Most of our communications and
advertising will actively promote
what Insurance Brokers do, and
educate people, who would
otherwise not consider a broker,
about the benefits of dealing with
you (advice, advocacy, convenience
and ongoing relationship).
Consumers will always make their
own choice regardless of our views.
Telling them what to do could be
ongoing support by recommending
our products as the best fit for your
clients. Brokers will always be our
preferred customer channel; you
understand the industry and its
processes.
Now when you see our increased
public advertising activity, especially
in the highly targeted digital space,
to inform more of the domestic
market about us, you’ll know why.
As part of this activity, we fully
expect to send business your way
To further capitalise on our activity,
this would be a good opportunity
to create your own marketing
campaign, targeting your customer
segments to promote the benefits
of using a broker like you.
Business as usual with a focus
on growth
By focusing on growth, we’re
investing in our business and the
industry, whilst constantly innovating
our benchmark products, remaining
competitive and providing the best
overall solution for our customers.
bad for business. When we discover
an existing broker relationship but
the customer refuses to return to
that fold, as a sign of good faith,
we give the broker the opportunity
to regain that business by advising
them of the terms and pricing
offered to the customer. Our terms
and pricing are identical whether to
a direct customer or via a broker.
With everything else being equal,
the broker then has the opportunity
to show how much more value
they add to the relationship. Same
price and terms plus additional
advocacy and support from an
experienced broker equals a great
customer experience. Why wouldn't
a customer use a broker?
As statistics show, 15% of domestic
clientele use brokers. It would be
great if more did, yet in the NZ
domestic space there is a real
sense of ‘do it yourself’. Typically,
customers who call us, demand
a direct relationship. It’s how
they’re wired. And yes, we know
that many direct customers could
save themselves time and stress
shopping around by speaking direct
to an informed broker instead.
We love working with brokers
We really enjoy our relationship
with our brokers, who have helped
us grow our business to where
we are today. Thank you for your

vehicles that are predominantly
privately owned for domestic use.
However, many owners of these
types of vehicles have relationships
with brokers due to that customer’s
business activities which produced
the means to allow them to purchase
their nicer toys. The level of entry
(purchase price) into the motorcycle
and caravan categories is lower,
making these toys more attainable
for the private, domestic market.
According to the Insurance Brokers
Association, their member firms
{which according to their website
represent the bulk of NZ Brokers}
write 85% of corporate {business}
and 15% of personal lines risks in
New Zealand.
Just like any business that enjoys
growth, and wants the best results
for all its stakeholders, we have
identified that by targeting owners

Track days – additional approvals.
Over time we’ve developed a strong
relationship with organisations
such as Downforce, Playday and
Tracktime to allow our customers
to attend their track events.
We’ve recently approved Rennsport
Gruppe as a new organiser of track
events at Taupo, Pukekohe, Manfeild
and Hampton Downs.
This is the first time we have
approved events at the Pukekohe
location, following a period of
monitoring their events and
participation by Roger Scholes.
The day includes approx 6 x 14
min sessions. Our clients run in the
Prestige Group which will have a
maximum of 16 vehicles and you
drive at the speed you feel safe at.
As always we require our clients to
give us at least 48hrs notice of any
track events they wish to participate
in, drivers must have also completed
some professional driver training
previously.
When it comes to providing insurance coverage for vehicles on the racetrack we have strict criteria for how events are managed and run.

Star office Christmas party.
White Water Party.
For a bit of adventure and team
building we all headed to the
new Wero White-water Park in
Manukau for an afternoon of white
water rafting. The facility features
two white water rafting courses
(we were on the more advanced
stage 4 course), 9,000sqm of
beautifully clear water to explore,
and the world's highest man-made
waterfall!
We began our day with a short
video presentation highlighting
what to expect and some important
safety information, which only
made a few of us more nervous!
Then it was time to put on a life
jacket, grab an oar and jump
into a 6 person inflatable boat
with a guide at the back to yell
instructions. After a few paddling
exercises around the lake to get
us in sync it was up and onto the
rapids!
It’s a 300 metre thrill through
pumping water! Very fast, very
wet and a whole lot of fun. After
a couple of trips down the rapids
it was time to increase the fun
by “riding into the rapids” which
basically means you up the
adrenaline and increase the water
intake. Most of our boats got flipped
at some stage during the activity,
throwing us into the river where
your only option is to lie on your
back and float down the rest of
the course.
The final option is a trip over the
man-made waterfall which looks
scary but is actually just like a big
thrilling log-flume ride.
Despite the nerves of a few staff the
afternoon was a great team building
exercise learning to support one
another, trust your fellow boatie,
follow instructions and have a good
laugh. We followed up our aqua
adventure with drinks and dinner
at the facility.
The star team didn’t have to worry about what to wear to the annual Christmas party, there was only one option ... togs!

You may be wondering why we’d
sponsor such an event. Esports
is huge around the world and is
growing incredibly fast in New
Zealand. This particular event has
a strong following with customers
that typically purchase one of our
Star Enthusiast products: Star Project

Classic and Star Motorsport.
LPL’s Project Cars is the most
authentic, beautiful, intense, and
technically-advanced racing game
on the planet. Created by gamers,
tested by real racing drivers, it’s the
preferred choice of Esports pros.
This simulation racing eSports event
was a resounding success last year
when it attracted professional and
virtual motorsport racers, resulting in
strong viewership against real-world
motorsport events.

Nic Tyson The Advisers
New Plymouth
I started in insurance in 2013
working for a corporate brokerage
and joined The Advisers at the end
of last year. Initially I worked as a
trained Accountant for 7 years but
found I wanted a job where I could
proactively see the difference my
advice would have for clients and
their business. My current role here
at the Advisers is as a Commercial
Broker where I lead and work with
an amazing team of people whose
sole focus is to make sure our
clients are looked after and
provided the best possible advice.
In my spare time my fiancé and I are
currently planning for our wedding
in March which has surprisingly
been a lot of fun. I have a keen
passion for travel and experiencing
the world and over the past few
years have been snowboarding in
remote parts of Japan, seen the
sun rise in Gallipoli for the 100 year
ANZAC commemoration and surfed
crystal blue waves in Hawaii.
Pritika Devendra
Crombie Lockwood
Auckland
I have been in the insurance industry
for 12 years. I started of with IAG
Insurance and joined Crombie
Lockwood in 2016 as a Group
Broking Manager for Personal Lines.
I have a passion for looking after
people, whether they are clients
or my group of brokers. Coming
from underwriting to broking was
a challenge, but I love it now.
In my personal life, I spend time
with my 2 kids and hubby! I had
an amazing break during Christmas
and New Years in Fiji, where all
our family from across the world
got together for the first time in
20 years! It was so much fun just
spending time with everyone. This
year my family and I are excited
to be moving into our brand new
house. I’m a passionate baker,
it’s my way to des-stress and I love
feeding people.
Terence Chandra Accounts Team
Auckland
I’ve been at Star for close to a
year, after finishing my B.Com at
Auckland University where I majored
in Accounting and Commercial Law.
This is my first paid job, although
I’ve volunteered at some non-profit
organisations in the past.
I was born in Fiji but grew up in
Auckland. I’ve got a keen interest in
football which I hope to get more
into again this year. I enjoy the team
I work with here at Star Insurance,
although they all think I spend too
long doing my hair!
Alana Anderson
Kiwibike
New Plymouth
Kiwibike Insurance was my
introduction to the Insurance
industry when I started 7 years
ago. I’ve worked my way up to
the position of General Manager.
When asked what I enjoy about my
job, my answer is always the same.
–the variety and no two days are the
same. I enjoy a challenge and the
insurance industry provides this.
My fiancée and I are both full time
working parents with three children,
15, 13 and 3. We have recently sold
our house and are currently in the
market for a new one. To maintain
a level of sanity I enjoy walking
5ks a day and in October last year
successfully won a competitive 5k
walk in a local event. I won a spot
prize of a $1000 travel voucher at
prize giving so planning on a family
holiday to Rarotonga mid 2019.
