!is week's Positive Pete winners…

PREMIER’S DEBATING CHALLENGEOn Thursday 23rd May, Alexandra S 5/6W, Arjuna T 5/6Y, Danielle K 5/6N, Eleanor L 5/6W and  Seeyeon K 5/6Y (reserve), participated in the first debate of the 'Premier's Debating Challenge' against Annandale Public School.

The team was the negative team and argued that 'All classes shouldn't have a dog or cat as a class pet'. It was a well-argued debate from both teams and the end result was a win to Balmain Public School!

All of debaters did an absolutely amazing job for their first debate in front of another school, showing their dedication through lunchtime practice sessions.  Balmain Public School is very proud! We look forward to hearing how future debates go and wish the team the very best of luck for the remaining three debates - well done!

VOICE. TREATY. TRUTH. LET’S WORK TOGETHER FOR A SHARED FUTURE. 7-14 July 2019

This year's NAIDOC week theme is 'Voice. Treaty. Truth'. At Balmain Public School, we are committed to involving Aboriginal families and students in our decision making process. We believe it's important for our Aboriginal students to have a say in what aspects of Aboriginal culture we teach in our school and how we implement cultural programs. https://www.naidoc.org.au

On Friday, we visited Boomalli Artist Gallery and Cooperative, to connect with local Aboriginal artists. Our Aboriginal students viewed artworks by more than 20 different artists and created a 'wish list' of people they would like to have visit our school. We are getting excited about the next part of this process, which will be reaching out to local Aboriginal artists to help us make works in our classrooms.

As part of this initiative, Aboriginal students have also had the opportunity to visit the bookshop to choose the Aboriginal texts we will be using in our classrooms.  These texts will also inform the indigenous component of our investigative learning program, as we aim to have teachers, students and families, working together to foster Aboriginal student voice at BPS.

You can visit the awesome Boomalli Art Gallery at 55/59 Flood St, Leichhardt NSW 2040 https://www.boomalli.com.au/

NSW Interschools

Skiing Championship Next school holidays, Balmain Public School will be entering a team in the NSW Interschools Skiing Championship in Thredbo. http://www.nswinterschools.com.au

The event runs from 16 to 20 July and is suitable for competent skiers and boarders, from K to 6.

Events include:

• Ski - Ski Cross, Downhill, Cross Country, Moguls

• Snowboard - Giant Slalom and Board Cross

The event attracts hundreds of participants from across the state. It should be a fantastic opportunity for the students of all standards!

All travel and accommodation is arranged independently. To be clear, this is not a school ski trip. The team will race together and support each other, but otherwise, each family will arrange their own trip.

It would be great to get a good sized team together, I’m sure there must be lots of ski families in the school community who would love to see their children compete in this fun event.

To find out more, contact Natasha Foster [email protected] or 0428 181 700.

WALK ON THE WILD SIDE! Kindergarten have been studying LIVING THINGS for science. Our first excursion to

Wildlife World was SO much fun and we learnt about so many creatures.

We had real encounters with some of the animals and

even got to pat a kangaroo!

Some of us were curious about the reptiles, some of us were

wary… some of us found them a little

bit scary!

At the end of the best excursion ever… we needed a rest, so

we lay down together!

We tried to be scary, but we are really too sweet…

Crocodiles look terrifying with their

scales and sharp teeth…

“With Cormac and my friends I made a haunted house in box construction. When you go inside there is a table with a scratch, the carpet is smothered with blood. Inside the toilet it is flooding with water. The person who is sleeping here has a Ferrari. We made it out of one big box, some paper and paddle-pop sticks, tape, some small boxes. I kinda like that it's haunted and has all these cracks in it.” – Oscar D

"There's thousands of money in our bank and inside the bank there's the button that lots of money falls out and you can grab it. We have been working on it for a very long time and the robot makes the money at the mint and I'm the robot. Aitan is the bank keeper and he's half robot half bank manager. He keeps the bank and helps make the money. Vivan is the backup robot and he makes money with me. We are the richest men alive!" - Lachlan H

"First I wanted to make a triangle so then I wanted to make a square and then I thought I wanted to make some curls on it so that's how I got it! Tessellation is shapes that don't have any gaps or overlaps and then we decorated them for art." - Frederique R

“We've started area, area is the space that something takes up. We're measuring it. We're figuring out if squares or rectangles are better to use.” - Arwen J

Literacy“If you use adjectives and if it's a chapter book you know what one of the characters look like and it can help you have a good picture inside your head. It makes your w r i t i n g m o r e interesting. We used adjectives to describe the Gruffalo.” - Emmie B

"The gruffalo has Raser sharp finger nails and teeth as sharp as a harpoon and bright white horns also a cherry red nose. He has flaming orange eyes and a pinecone tail. He has a lime green wart on the end of his nose and spiky claws at the end of his hands." - Aitan M, Emmie B and Farran W

Mother’s Day“We cut the pieces of writing out and we did whatever drawing we want and I did lots of leaves, about s ix teen leaves , and butterflies too. My mum said “Miss Cooper must have done a LOT of work!” She loved it!” - Rosie F
