Metrowater uses hosepipes to supplywater to houses in narrow streets

To supply water to houses in narrow streets and alleys where thewater tankers cannot enter, Metrowater is using hosepipes up to 200feet in length. The specially designed pipes are connected to the wateroutlet of the tankers at one end and then laid along the narrow alleyswhere they are connected to T-shaped pipes set up at regular intervalsfor the residents to draw water directly.

“This is to ensure women don’t have to walk long distances with pots.In most lanes, the residents coordinate the water supply. Now, sinceresidents get water right in front of their houses, neither is there anyhassle nor any middlemen earning commission,” said an official.

The first such experiment was successfully implemented inSubbarayan Street in Royapuram. It will be followed in WestMambalam. T. Nagar. Anna Nagar, Saidapet, Triplicane and all otherareas where there are narrow streets. He said that work has alreadystarted in some slum areas in Anna Nagar.

The network of T-shaped pipes costs about Rs.25,000 per street andthe hosepipes cost extra. A Metrowater engineer said that in someareas where old pipelines exist, they will set up T-shaped pipes andpump water into small existing water sumps. From the sumps, watercan be pumped to each household.
