TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

MOVIES AND MUSIC: GNB - 1G. N. Balasubramaniam was a legend in his lifetime, a

legend that still lives long after his lamented departure forthe Land of No Return. He was an icon of Classical CarnaticMusici mmortalised under his famous initials ‘GNB’.

Like most Carnatic musicians of yesteryears he too had hisbrush with movies during the early decades of Tamil cinema, the 1930-1940’s. Not many are aware that GNB was the firstcollege-educated man to appear in Tamil cinema when themedium was treated as a dirty six-letter word! He was a B. A,(Hons.) degree holder and it appeared as a suffix to his namein all the movie ads of his day.

His innings in Tamil cinema covered only five films: ‘BhamaVijayam’ (1934), ‘Sathi Anasuya’ (1937), ‘Sakunthalai’ (1940),‘Rukmangadhan’ (1946) and ‘Udayanan Vasavadatta’ (1946).But only ‘Sakunthalai’ has been permanently and indeliblyetched in public memory while old-timers still recall thesuper hit of early 1930’s, ‘Bhama Vijayam’. The rest areforgotten even by film buffs.

Gudalur Narayanaswamy Balasubramaniam was born onJanuary, 6. 1910. His father, the popular Headmaster of theHindu High School in Triplicane, G. V. NarayanaswamyIyer, was a type-cast Tanjore an to the hilt. Music ran in theveins of Iyer and he was on first-name basis and intimacywith the legendary musical stalwarts of the day such asTirukodikaval Krishna Iyer (violin wizard and Semmangudi’suncle), Tirumarugal Natesa Pillai (great nagaswaram-expo-nent and T. N. Rajaratnam Pillai’s uncle), Palladam SanjeevaRao (famed flautist) and the greatest Roman of them all,Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar. They visited him at his homein Madras and sang often. No wonder music entered the soul, sinews and skin of the young lad, Balu.

“Right from my birth I lived in an atmosphere drenched inmusic and this helped to nurture, develop and sustain myardor in music”, GNB wrote later.

Blessed with handsome looks, charm and a malleablemelodious voice, he received encouragement in music fromhis learned father. And he did well in his studies too andearned his B. A. (Hons) degree in English Literature in 1930.Like most middle-class Brahmins of the day, his fatherwished that his son should be a lawyer and move to LuzChurch Road, Mylapore where top lawyers lived in theirbungalows and garden houses! But GNB had already madeup his mind to be a professional performing musician.

Indeed he took his bow in 1928 when he first sang at theKapaleeswarar temple in Mylapore. It was a raving debut. He had received training under the noted violinist KarurChinnaswamy Iyer and Madurai Subramania Iyer, bothneighbors in Triplicane. Besides formal training he hadimbibed much more music by sheer mental osmosis bylistening to the great legends like Ariyakudi RamanujaIyengar and Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer.

Soon his fame began to fan out fast and, ere long, he was amuch sought-after performer. His style of singing foundincreasing favour with music lovers and a ‘GNB-baani’emerged. And, GNB, the legend, was born.

Not surprisingly, Tamil cinema spread out the red carpetto the resplendent rising star. A Coimbatore-based filmproducer A. N. Maruthachalam Chettiar signed GNB for hismovie. Affectionately known as ‘Chellam’, Chettiar had pro-moted a film company, ‘Chellam Talkies’ in association withhis pals like the textile mill owner and moneybag of Kovai, P.S. Sathappa Chettiar. Its first venture was ‘Bhama Vijayam’,a mythological movie about Lord Krishna, Satyabhama andRukmini. To direct the movie the Hollywood-trained film-maker Manik Lal Tandon was engaged. As he knew no Tamil, the Coimbatore lawyer-turned-filmmaker, C. K. Sachi, wasbrought in to assist him. Popular stage stars P. S. Ratna Bai,P. S. Saraswathi Bai, known as ‘Palayamkottah Sisters’ or‘Bai Sisters’ and M. R. Krishnamurthy were fixed to playRukmini, Satyabhama and Krishna respectively.(Krishnamurthi was Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer’syounger brother and a noted stage and screen star of his day.)

Resident Associations should not campaignfor NOTA

Sir, This has reference to the appeal made by T. NagarResidents’ Welfare Association requesting residents to exer-cise the NOTA option in the ensuing Tamilnadu LegislativeAssembly elections on May 16.

It is not a correct option and the Association should not runsuch campaigns.

Only if 30% of the votes polled are NOTA, the electionresults will be cancelled and this is not likely to happen.

So there is no point in antagonizing the forthcoming govern-ment by making such public announcements of favoring NOTA.

So I request Resident Associations not to campaign forNOTA and let the residents choose whom they want to vote for.M. Venkataraman, President, Tirunagar Residents Wel-fare Association, Chennai 83, Ph: 94446 25640.
