These shops have put upstructures which occupyalmost one half of the carriage-way causing obstruction tomotorists and pedestrians.

A shop owner toldMambalam Times that asthey have been doing businesson the road for more than 2decades and are also payingproperty taxes, evicting themwas unlawful. “If the spacebelongs to Southern Railwayas claimed by the Corporation,why did it collect taxes fromus,” asks a vendor.

The road offers connectivity

to Mambalam railway station,and motorists and commutershave been complaining aboutthe encroachments for a longtime, said a Corporation official.

He said that not all shopshave been razed, and there aremore than 100 shops operatingwith proper licenses.

But with the skywalk projecton the anvil, many of theselicensed shops too might haveto be removed, he added.

Dr. Vasumathy Vedantham (Medical Director, Radhatri Nethralaya)explained the different types of cracker injuries and demonstrated thefirst aid methods. She also demonstrated the first aid techniques for eyeinjuries caused by crackers.

Metrowater has launched program to edu-cate the public on the need for proper mainte-nance of rain water harvesting structures.

As part of the program, S. P. Velumani(Municipal Administration and Rural Devel-opment Minister) on Oct. 23 flagged off a rallyin T. Nagar to create awareness on impor-tance of proper maintenance of the rain waterharvesting structures.

Metrowater has requested residents to cleanthe existing structures, and also aims to con-duct inspections.

Hundreds of devoteesparticipated in the specialprocession organised tocommemorate thecentenary of Shirdi SaiSamadhi Day in WestMambalam last week.
