Life in Chennai limps back tonormalcy

Unprecedented heavy rains in Chennai, followed by the floods, marked the beginning of December this year. After wreckinghavoc on the residents of the city, for almost a month in November, the condition turned worse after the heavy downpour on Dec. 1 andrelease of water from reservoirs on Dec. 2 and 3, which led toinundation in a number of low lying areas in the city and floodingof almost all the roads. The normal life almost came to a standstillin the city and many chose to stay indoors and most offices andbusiness establishments remained closed. In most areas there wasno power for close to four days. There was huge scarcity ofessentials and those stuck in flooded areas were provided food byimmediate neighbours, NGO’s, voluntary organisations and thepublic at large. Many whose houses got inundated had to flee tosafer locations, abandoning their belongings.

After the rains finally relented, and days after the floodsbrought death and destruction in its wake, life for common citizensis slowly limping back to normal.

However Chennai weather forecast is still grim, with the METdepartment saying heavy rains will hit coastal Tamilnadu, includ-ing Chennai, due to low pressure in Bay of Bengal.

Shops opened up and a massive clean up operations has beeninitiated in the affected areas where the water levels have receded. The resumption of public transport has made life easier afterbeing completely crippled from Dec. 1 to 6. Schools and collegesare slated to open on Dec. 13. Rescue and relief operations arehowever still in progress.
