The Call to Worship

Leader: I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord, our feet shall stand within Thy gates O Jerusalem! (Psalm 122:1)

Leader: Because of the house ofthe Lord our God, I will seek Thy good. (Psalm

122:9)

People: Those that be planted in the house of the Lord, shall flourish in the courts of our God. (Psalm 92:13)

Leader: Blessed are they that dwell in Thy house. Lord, I have loved Thy habitation, the place where Thy honor dwelleth. (Psalm 26:8)

People: For the Lord is in His holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before Him.

(Habakkuk 2:20).

Leader: Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in Thy sight, O Lord my strength and my redeemer. (Psalm 19:14)

Unison: O Sing unto the Lord a new song, for He has done marvelous things. Make a

Scripture Lesson(Please Stand for the Reading of God’s Word)

James 2:1-13 (The Message Bible) — Discrimination and Favoritism ForbiddenLeader:My dear friends, don’t let public opinion influence how you live out our glorious,

Christ-originated faith.

People: If a man enters your church wearing an expensive suit, and a street person wearing rags comes in right after him, and you say to the man in the suit, “Sit here, sir; this is the best seat in the house!” and either ignore the streetperson or say, “Better sit here in the back row,” haven’t you segregatedGod’s children and proved that you are judges who can’t be trusted?

Leader: Listen, dear friends. Isn’t it clear by now that God operates quite differently? He chose the world’s down-and-out as the kingdom’s first citizens, with full rights and privileges.

People: This kingdom is promised to anyone who loves God. And here you are abusing these same citizens! Isn’t it the high and mighty who exploit you, who use the courts to rob you blind? Aren’t they the ones who scorn the new name—“Christian”—used in your baptisms?

Leader: You do well when you complete the Royal Rule of the Scriptures: “Love others asyou love yourself.” But if you play up to these so-called important people, you goagainst the Rule and stand convicted by it. You can’t pick and choose in thesethings, specializing in keeping one or two things in God’s law and ignoring others. The same God who said, “Don’t commit adultery,” also said, “Don’t murder.” If you don’t commit adultery but go ahead and murder, do you think your non-adultery will cancel out your murder? No, you’re a murderer, period.

ALL: Talk and act like a person expecting to be judged by the Rule that sets us free. For if you refuse to act kindly, you can hardly expect to be treated kindly. Kind mercy wins over harsh judgment every time.

Litany in Remembrance of Rev. Jarena LeeWritten by Reverend Pamela Rivera

Leader: God is no respecter of person; gender is not the criteria for those whom God calls or chooses.

People: God looks at the heart.

Leader: God did not instruct us to march to the cadence of genderism, sexism or any other ism that may restrict and bind our mandate to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

People: We are called to obedience to God and freedom from the chains and weights of humanity that attempts to keep us quiet, still and fearful.

Leader: The voice of history still speaks encouraging us to press forward and not give in to the pressures of those who disavow the call to preach, the call to teach and thecall to evangelize based upon gender.

People: We must go where God sends us and say what God tells us to whomever Goddirects us to speak.

Leader: Jarena Lee heard a call beyond her own inter-consciousness to go and preach theGood News.

People: Although unpopular and not sanctioned by the social and religious norms of the day Jarena Lee dared to say yes to the mantel of ministry with authority and buoyancy.

Leader: Jarena Lee stood firm on her call to preach and did not allow anyone or anythingdictate her Kingdom assignment.

ALL: May Jarena Lee’s courage to defy the doctrine and discipline of the African Methodist Episcopal Church and her tenacity to persevere continue to be a torch that lights the path for women fighting for religious equality everywhere.

Scripture of the Day

Discrimination Forbidden.“In Christ’s family there can be no division into Jew and non-Jew, slave and free, male and female. Among us you are all equal. That is, we are all in a common relationship with Jesus Christ.” Galatians 3:28 (MSG)

Quote of the Day“Discrimination is a hellhound that gnaws at Negroes in every waking moment of their lives to remind them that the lie of their inferiority is accepted as truth in the society dominating them.”Martin Luther King, Jr.

Thought of the WeekWe are all called by God to belong to God’s kingdom. God doesn’t show any favoritism or segregation. The reading from Ezekiel 34:11–15 shows that God gathers all people from every corner of the world to come home. It doesn’t matter who you are—your color, creed, or status. God wants to gather all people no matter where we are. Even those who were scattered in diaspora, they are all called to come back home where they belong. We are called to restoration and reconciliation where we will have the right as heirs and children of God.

Paul in his letter to the Ephesians writes: So then, remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called “the uncircumcision” by those who are called “the circumcision”—a physical circumcision made in the flesh by human hands—remember that you were at that time without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. (Ephesians 2:11–13)

There is no one who should look down upon us because we belong to the church of Christ. For God, we are one people redeemed through Christ and called to fulfill God’s mission in the world:

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. (1 Corinthians 12:12)

We need to be reminded, as in the words of Peter:But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the might acts of [God] who called you out of darkness into [God’s] marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy(1 Peter 2:9–10). We all belong to the First AME Church, Pasadena and to God; we are all here because this is our home and we belong. Amen.

Humor of the WeekA man wants to become a bell-ringer but has no arms. So, he tells the priest of his wish, but the priest says: "How can you be our bell-ringer without arms?" He replied "Arms? Who needs 'em!" So, the arm-less guy runs to the top of the bell tower, and starts ringing the bell with his face, making beautiful music. Unfortunately, he misses the last note, and falls from the bell tower. A bunch of parishioners gather around him, asking: "Who is this guy?" The priest says: "I don't know, but his face rings a bell."

Ash WednesdayAsh Wednesday services will be held on Wednesday, March 6, 2019at 10:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Ash Wednesday is the first day of 40 (excluding Sundays), leading up to Easter Sunday – the celebration of Jesus's resurrection from the cross. On Ash Wednesday, we come to church to kneel, to pray, and to ask God’s forgiveness, surrounded by other sinners. Human sin is universal; we all do it, not only Christians. Our church tradition sets aside Ash Wednesday as a particular day to address sin and death. We do this mindful that "God hates nothing God has made and forgives the sins of all who are penitent." We are ALL sinners, no better and no worse than our brothers and sisters.

REVEREND JARENA LEE (1783–185?)

Reverend Jarena Lee was the first authorized female preacher in the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church. Lee, whose family or maiden name is unknown, was born to a poor but free black family on February 11, 1783, in Cape May, New Jersey. In 1790 at the age of seven, Lee was sent to work as a live-in servant for a white family named Sharp.

Lee moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as a teenager and continued to work as a domestic servant. One afternoon, Lee attended a worship service at Bethel

Church where Bishop Richard Allen, founder of the A.M.E. Church, was scheduled to preach. After hearing the powerful sermon delivered by Allen, Lee became filled with the Holy Spirit and converted to Christianity.

In 1807 Lee heard the voice of God commissioning her to preach the Gospel. She was initially reluctant to pursue ministry, given the male-dominated nature of the church. However, she decided to confide in Bishop Allen and revealed to him her call to preach. Allen told Lee that he could not grant her permission to preach because he was required to uphold the A.M.E. Church’s ban against female ministers.

In 1811 Lee married Pastor Joseph Lee, and the couple had two children. After seven years of marriage, Lee’s husband died. During the course of her marriage and after her husband’s death, her desire to proclaim the word of God grew even stronger. This caused Lee to renew her advocacy for women in ministry.

In 1819 during a worship service at Bethel Church, a guest preacher began struggling with his message and abruptly stopped preaching. As he stared into the congregation at a loss for words, Lee sprang to her feet and began preaching, picking up where the minister had left off. After Lee’s sermon, she was afraid that Bishop Allen would punish her for preaching without permission. On the contrary, Allen was so impressed by Lee that he officially gave her authorization to preach the Gospel. Allen asserted that God had called Lee to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Shortly thereafter, Lee began to travel to various cities for preaching engagements and was highly praised for her powerful sermons. Her life’s witness demonstrated that “possibility” with many saved, churches built, and communities restored with schools, and mission support. Further in2016, she finally received posthumously, her full ordination.

In addition to her work in ministry, Lee was also heavily involved in the abolitionist movement and joined the American Antislavery Society in 1839. To share her experiences in ministry, Lee decided to pen her autobiography titled The Life and Religious Experience of Jarena Lee. She completed her autobiography in expanded form in 1849. The exact date and circumstances of Minister Lee’s death are unknown. However, the records of Mount Pisgah AME Church Cemetery where she is buried indicate that she died in 1855. Other sources list her death in 1857.
