Our New Hearing Dog This gorgeous little dog is Hetty, who arrived in W.A. in late September. She is sponsored by the Lions Club of Floreat. She is a very lively little dog and the Club members are working hard to enforce her training. Her owner Dawn is very pleased to have her and also needs to be reminded that Hetty is a working dog and that she needs to keep to the routine.

MOORA CWA AND MOORA LIONS PARTNERSHIP On October 27th the Moora CWA and Moora Lions Members worked together to hold a Garden Party with Sabrina Hahn at Ann and Brian Watson’s home in Moora.

Guests came from as far as Perth, Dalwallinu and Jurien Bay to spend time with Sabrina who was informative, entertaining and approachable to the 100 guests seated under the trees.

Proceeds from the afternoon went to the Lions Alzheimer’s Foundation to help Professor Ralph Martins and his team with the research into this disease.

The Afternoon started with guests having access to the beautiful garden this was followed by an entertaining talk from Sabrina and a question and answer session. Afternoon Tea was supplied by the Moora Lions during which Sabrina signed her latest book- ‘Sabrina’s Dirty Deeds’ for all who were lucky enough to be able to purchase one on the day.

A huge thank you to Sabrina for making the afternoon such a great success and for her generous donation to the Lions Alzheimer’s Foundation.

BALLAJURA LIONS CLUB

OZ Read is Up and Running by Ballajura Lions

Ballajura Lions Club has once again been part of the Oz Read project this year.

The five Primary Schools in our area each received $200 worth of Australian books to go into their school libraries.

These books were recently presented at School Assemblies at Alinjarra Primary School, Ballajura Primary School, Illawarra Primary School, Mary MacKillop Catholic Community Primary School and South Ballajura Primary School.

It was with great pleasure that members of the club have been able to attend the assemblies and extend the reading of Australian authors to the children of our area.

We will continue to do so over the coming years.

Check out the Ellenbrook Lions website to learn more about the project and it's origins.

HOPE IN A BOAT NEWS The mission to tow a boat behind a motorcycle all the way around Australia to raise money for diabetes research continued in 2016, this time we would go anti clockwise and arrangements were made to go to Tasmania and visit as many clubs as possible. Most fund raising projects stay on the mainland and stick to the coast road but we decided that we would visit clubs that were within reach and we had enough response from Tasmania to justify heading over there. With only weeks to go a truck backed in the motorcycle and damaged it, the driver's insurance was stalling and as all the parts have to come from America we knew we would be waiting so, we had to get another bike fast and meet our commitments including the ferry on time.

We headed off as arranged across the Nullabor and headed to Tasmania. The very first day after breakfast with two Lions clubs in Devonport we headed to Launceston to meet up with another two clubs. A reporter was there and he wasted no time getting the story to print and for the rest of the time in Tasmania everywhere we went people knew what we were doing and it made it so much easier to collect money. Even as we were loading onto the ferry we were right up front and people were getting out of their cars and bringing donations to us. Moments like that remind us that what we are doing is worthwhile because we are seeing human nature at its best.

We continued up the east coast collecting and giving talks at Lions clubs until we reached Burleigh Heads where we were hit by a major storm. We were invited to shelter in a motel until the storm blew over but the motel was damaged in the storm and we could do nothing but wait. On the news we could see that people were losing their houses and cars in shopping centre car parks were under water, but all we could do was wait. When it started to move south we thought if we headed north we could get away from it, but we were too badly damaged. Surprisingly the bike did not have a scratch. We limped into Toomoomba and had the trailer looked at but the engineer said “This trailer is not going anywhere”. We also had a hole the size of a soccer ball in the hull of the boat. Faced with another 16,000 km including the Plains and the Great Sandy Desert or head 4,500km home we patched the trailer and headed home but it was slow going and it took ten days. Glen Hurst.
