educate the whole congregation in the ways in which God lavishes his mercies upon us as he has upon those who have come before who sang these same songs.
• The confession of the Creeds and praying The Lord’s Prayer, further instills and strengthens the key beliefs of our ancient faith which, when learned from a young age, is the one thing –God’s Word—that will come pouring out of the hearts and mouths even when the ravages of dementia and Alzheimer’s have taken every other memory.
• Jesus Christ, true God and true man, is for all people of all ages. He has promised to be fully present in the preaching of the word—He IS the word made flesh. He is fully present for you in the hearing of the oral proclamation, withholding nothing for the sake of his sheep.
Therefore, let’s take this extraordinary time to encourage families, whatever their make-up, to attend the live-streamed service produced over YouTube (or in person if you and your loved ones are not high-risk and desire to do so) every Sunday morning at 9am as a family. This is a time to sing together, hear the readings together, confess the Creed and to say the Lord’s Prayer together, and, most importantly, to receive the absolution—Jesus Christ in the forgiveness of sins—together explicitly in the Brief Order of Confession and Forgiveness at the beginning of each service and in every sermon. With that said… (Continued on pg. 2- “Looking ahead to September”)
A Message From The Pastor . . .
Education Plan for 2020-2021 (Sept. – Jan.) Prepared by Rev. Dr. Marney Fritts
All plans are tentative and subject to change with the frequently changing government restrictions. Staff will re-evaluate the education plan and in-person teaching after the Annual meeting, 2021.
This coming education year is confronted with the severe complication of coronavirus and frequently changing restrictions at the state and local level. Our normal way of proceeding is not going to be a reality for the foreseen future. This, however, is not something that should cause great concern for the continued passing along and strengthening of the faith of all ages of our congregation. The reason for this is that it has been shown that the primary event for faith formation is the not the Sunday school hour, or the high school youth gathering. These are secondary. The primary avenue of the bestowal and strengthening of faith is through the regular Sunday, corporate, worship service with the family. We believe this is true, whether on-line or in person. The worship service is the most intergenerational activity the church does where all ages are engaged and addressed by God:
• Since the words of the liturgies are from scripture, people of all ages become familiar with many parts of scripture throughout the service. And not only that, we believe that as we sing, we are joining in with the present and eternal singing of the angels, the archangels and all the hosts of heaven!
• The brief order of confession and absolution of sin is not simply for the adults who have sins, worries, fears, or a sense of helplessness, but for all ages, including children and youth, who are subject to many influencing forces and authorities, both from within and from without, and are therefore in just as much need of hearing this specific, freeing grace of God in Christ who forgives them, unconditionally.
• The hymns and music continue to
Zion reopened for Worship Services on Sunday July 5th, 9am

Youth and Family Ministry
School for Faith - for all ages: LOOKING ahead to September
Rally Day – As there is a current Phase Two restriction on “social gatherings” to be no larger
than 5 people, THERE WILL BE NO RALLY DAY THIS YEAR.
Adult Education Weekly bible Study on the book of Romans will begin on Tuesdays at 4 pm via zoom, starting September 15th. Please email Pastor Marney if you would like to receive the link to participate in the bible study: [email protected]
Senior High
Will meet via zoom beginning Sunday, September 13th at 6:30pm. Parents, please watch for an email containing the zoom link before class begins.
Faith Alive (Confirmation) Pastor Barry will be holding confirmation classes at Zion via zoom on Sundays at 11am, beginning September 13th. Parents, please watch for an email containing the zoom link before class begins.
Godly Play
As there is a current Phase Two restriction on “social gatherings” to be no larger than 5 people outside of your home per week, and a Phase Three limit of no more than 10, there will be no in-person Sunday School. As there was only one child who attended just one Sunday when Sunday school was offered via zoom in the month of May, for the fall Zion will be offering the SEED education planner for families to be used by and run in individual homes by parents/guardians. This education planner (schedule) begins September 13th in the book of Genesis with Adam and Eve. Here is the link to the webpage:
https://www.solapublishing.com/seed In the upper right-hand corner of the screen, click on “sign-in” and enter (case-sensitive): username: ZionKent password: 1Luther1903
In addition, for those who desire a brief daily devotion that stimulates family faith conversations, we recommend the Holy Family Time tab available at solapublishing.com: https://www.holyfamilytime.com/
Events and Happenings
Upcoming Event Plan Changes:
Adult Devotions on Facebook - are discontinuing at this time as we are
opening up more now with services.
Yet, there are about 4 1/2 months worth of video devotions in the archive tab in the group. The course on Revelation is also available in the same archive. Go to Zion Lutheran Church Kent Facebook page to find these. If you have not joined, you can search for the church group in Facebook and click “join.”
A reminder: due to the pandemic, there will be no VBS, Confirmation camp at Lutherhaven, or Senior High service trip this summer. Please keep these ministries and all the children, youth, and staff in your thoughts and prayers during this time.
Garden Tour - Although cancelled this year, let’s plan to do it next year! Enjoy your gardens! (Thank you, Sonya for sharing your garden flowers with us!)
Mission Quilting: Our Mission quilters finished with 200 quilts made. We will have them blessed in September. Then the quilts will head off to Lutheran World Relief in October
Julefest workshops are happening on Monday mornings at 9:30am. If you have any ideas, please bring them to us. There are also projects that have been started you can take home and work on. Questions? Contact Pat or Sonya or Church Office at 253-631-0100. Hope to see you!
Thanks for the tour of your
garden, Sonya !

family watched a particular service. There would need to be a Bylaws change at the annual meeting to include language regarding online attendance. It was noted that in order to remain a voting member, a confirmed member over 18 years of age shall have made a contribution of record in the current or previous year.
4. Zion’s college students will be added to the Horizon mailing list. They will also be sent a message encouraging them to attend a church near them.
5. We discussed re-starting the “Missed You” list. If a member has missed four Sundays, they will receive a phone call. We’ll discuss this in more detail at a later meeting.
6. Motion to approve the following 2nd quarter undesignated benevolences forwarded from the Stewardship Committee:
$1683.70 to Kent Community Suppers $1262.77 to Audio Book Ministries (formerly Tape Ministries - name change) $1262.77 to Street Youth Ministries MSP to pay the three benevolences listed. 7. Pastor Marney provided an education plan for the
upcoming school year, from September through January. The plan will be printed in the next Horizon.
8. The annual congregational meeting has been tentatively scheduled for January 31, 2021.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Virtual meeting was called to order at 7:04 p.m. by Vice President Paul, via Zoom. The meeting began with a moment of silence and fond memories from Pastor Barry in memory of Council member Kurt.
Present: Pastor Barry Fritts, Evelyn, Paul, Pat, Tim, Pat, Bob, Lynn, Mike, Sara Excused Absence: Mark, Beth

Old Business: 1. Staff Reviews are being conducted electronically
and should be done by the end of July. 2. The inactive members have been contacted by
phone. Those who responded will be listed in the database according to their wishes, as either remaining inactive, transferred to active, or removed from membership. Those who did not respond we’ll leave as inactive for now and attempt to contact again next year.
New Business & Action Items: 1. We have had two Sunday worship services since
the Phase 2 re-opening of the church. Both had approx. 18 people attend.
2. The Council has issued the following Directive: Everyone leading the Sunday worship service must wear a mask or face shield at all times, unless they are behind plexiglass. It is recommended that masks be worn when in close proximity to others, a face shield is permitted when farther away. Pastor has ordered 20 face shields for this purpose.
3. Council is looking at ways to count watching the service online as personal attendance, since we cannot rely on the yellow attendance cards during the current Covid-19 restrictions. This is important because according the Bylaws, Part II,B.3, a confirmed member who does not partake of Holy Communion, support the church with offerings, and does not appear to desire to participate in the life and worship of this congregation, shall be removed from membership after a certain period of time. One possibility is to set up an email address that members could use to indicate how many in the

The 7-Ups * * * * * Words of Wisdom
1: WAKE UP ! Decide to have a good day. "This is the day the Lord hath made; let us
rejoice and be glad in it." Psalms 118:24
2: DRESS UP ! The best way to dress up is to put on a smile. A smile is an inexpensive way
to improve your looks. "The Lord does not look at the things man looks at.
Man looks at outward appearance, the Lord looks at the heart."
1 Samuel 16:7
3: SHUT UP ! Say nice things and learn to listen. God gave us two ears and one mouth, so
He must have meant for us to do twice as much listening as talking. "He who
guards his lips guards his soul." Proverbs 13:3
4: STAND UP ! ...for what you believe in. Stand for something or you will fall for anything.
"Let us not be weary in doing good; for at the proper time, we will reap a
harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do
good..." Galatians 6:9-10
5: LOOK UP ! ...to the Lord. "I can do everything through Christ who strengthens me.”
Philippians 4:13
6: REACH UP ! ...for something higher. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not
unto your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will
direct your path." Proverbs 3:5-6
7: LIFT UP ! ... your Prayers. "Do not worry about anything; instead PRAY ABOUT
EVERYTHING." Philippians 4:6
