Discussion Re 10.8 from 2019 Minutes on the Mental Health Academy Scholarship

Joanne Cardosi reported on her experience of the MHA and informed us that she found the units

very helpful and has re-subscribed another year. Joanne highly recommends MHA for Professional

Development. Joanne also alerted us to the facts that interesting and topical new units are

    continually appearing.

Chris Thomas commented that MHA automatically re-subscribes for another year if you do reply

to the email they send you asking for your intentions.

Patricia Shepherd informed us that her contact at MHA has said she will let her know if the APA

    prescribed units change.

Presidents Report for 2020 APA AGM

Welcome everyone and thank you for taking the time to attend this, our 6th AGM of the APA Inc NSW. It is actually our 18th AGM as the association was originally incorporated in Canberra. Thank you also to those members who were unable to attend this meeting but are still participating as their voices are heard through their proxy votes, without which, a quorum may not be reached. A huge thank you also to Brian, Glennys and Barb and the VAA’s many helpers for hosting this 23rd International FAA Conference, an event that sadly, may be the last in its present format. My first conference was in Brisbane at the turn of the century and I can still remember returning home to Wollongong, feeling bereft and alone. It was the first time I had experienced the loss of a tribe I had only just discovered and now missed. International House is a great location close to all things that have made these conferences such great events. As well as providing the venue for our astrological community these events provide the only opportunity for our tribal gatherings combining education, professional development and socialisation. Committee member and Membership Convener Sagari Menefy has been kept busy with enquiries and applications for membership and I am sure the completed ‘Associate Membership Enquires Package’ has been a time saver. I extend a warm welcome to new members Joanne Cardosi of QLD and Susan Boxshall of VIC. Joanne participated in Glennys Lawton’s QFA supervision group and first joined as an Associate Member. The total of new membership over the past few years comes to 7 with Annabelle Bennie, Charyn McLean, Pauline Hepburn, Fay Reynolds and Jacqueline Godfrey. Thank you Sagari your role here is much appreciated As you are aware the APA has added to its support of members and students with its annual APA MHA Scholarship, with a 12 month subscription. This applies for those that are Associate Members and wish to fulfil their counselling component for full membership. See agenda item 10.4 for more information. There were 4 APA Exam Scholarships awarded for 2019/2020 and Julie Day, APA Committee Member and APA Exam Scholarship Coordinator, has a detailed report for you (see agenda item 10.2). This was Julie’s first year in the role and she came through with flying colours. Thank you Julie.

The successful applicant for the APA Student Conference Sponsorship is Renee Aland of Noosaville QLD. More details agenda item 10.3. 2020 will see a few changes in the APA Committee with the resignation of Christine Rothwell as Secretary and Narelle Duncan as Treasurer and APA Newsletter Editor. Both ladies have been an integral part of the Executive Committee where trust and team work was a given. With the best interests of the APA always front and centre, ladies it has been a joy to work beside you. Hopefully this will not be the last we see of you. Ladies of the committee thank you for your continuing support throughout the year and for undertaking those duties not normally assigned to your role. Life sometimes deals us a hand that requires us to step back for a time requiring others to step up. This team, our team understands. Thank you Patricia

2020 Grant Report for APA AGM: Patricia

At the 2018 APA AGM a motion was moved That a request by a FAA State Association for a funding grant for the provision of group Supervision for prospective Associate Members by an approved APA supervisor be included into the APA Grant Guidelines

  • 12

This is now included under Finances in the APA Working Guidelines. In 2014 also included into the Working Guidelines That the APA Grant that is currently $500 annually become $1,000 every second year, beginning in 2014. [January 2014] To date this grant has only had one recipient, the honour going to Glennys Lawton in 2017. As a QFA initiative Glennys provided supervision over a number of years to some of its members who were interested, not only in becoming APA members, but also in the valuable experience it provided them personally and professionally. Of that group 4 are now full members. A very successful initiative and outcome, indeed a win/win situation for all concerned. This is an example of how the Grant may be applied.

One of the main objectives of the Grant is” to encourage the sharing of such expertise, or the undertaking of such projects, as may enhance the professionalism and standing of astrology in the wider community, and/or support the membership both as small business people and in their professional aims as astrologers in particular”.

For further information go to the APA website.

    2020 STUDENT CONFERENCE SPONSORSHIP: Patricia

The successful applicant for the APA Student Conference Sponsorship 2020 is Renee Aland of Noosaville QLD (a student of Chiron Shakti) who has been a member of the QFA since December 2017. Renee, who has worked in the field of Astronomy for many years states that one of her aims is to help bridge the gap between Astronomers and Astrologers. By attending the conference Renee hopes to be able to share what she learns and to speak in a confident manner with likeminded individuals as well as those that have no knowledge of the subject, in that they may understand its benefits. And finally, for those against the subject so they do not discourage astrology and at best be more open and aware that there is far more to the subject even if they wish not to pursue it themselves. Congratulations Renee. The conference package is valued at $1,404 and includes the Conference Celebration ‘Saturday Night at the South Node’ where the dress code is to come as your South Node.

2020 MENTAL HEALTH ACADEMY scholarship UPDATE FOR APA AGM: Patricia

In 2019 it was passed into our Working Guidelines That the APA provide an annual scholarship for a 12 month membership of the MHA to an Associate Member engaged in supervision wishing to fulfil the counselling requirement for professional membership. Where the successful candidate has already paid, the fees will be reimbursed. During 2019 the executive, both past and present, finalised the course content specified for the online counselling program provided by Mental Health Academy. As you are aware the APA has endorsed, as an option of an accredited counselling course, the MHA for prospective members

  • 13

    13

who wish to fulfil the hours of counselling needed for our membership. Due to the online nature of MHA it was agreed at the 2018 AGM to increase the 30 hour requirement for APA membership to 38 hours. Given the availability of some excellent choices, we took into consideration the input of two of our members who trialled the course and also input from MHA. Due to this there has been some changes and an inclusion of a non-compulsory, Highly Recommended list of units/videos. Joanne Cardosi, although not a recipient of the scholarship completed her APA counselling requirements with MHA and found the units extremely helpful and pertinent to her astrological practice. She may, in the future, continue her studies with them due to the vast array of subjects that will enhance her counselling skills. This is great feedback from Joanne All information and criteria for the scholarship was included with the APA Winter Newsletter and is now available from our website. Applications close on September 30th each year

APA Honorary Life Member Membership Nomination: Sylvia Wilson

2 December, 2019 To the APA Committee, Jeanni Monks and I would like to nominate Sylvia Wilson for Honorary Life Membership of the APA Inc. Sylvia is a founding member of the APA and served as our secretary for ten years. Sylvia was awarded Fellow Membership at our AGM in January 2014 due to her tireless work for our organization, but I believe she now deserves the highest honour, Honourary Life Membership as Sylvia is literally the gift that keeps on giving. As Secretary I would not have been able to do my job without her mentoring and assistance, and this continues to this day. Sylvia’s vast knowledge of our organization – and both Jeanni and I believe, all the organizations that she serves, including the QFA and the FAA – make her a phenomenal resource. However, it is her willingness to share this knowledge and assist whenever asked, that marks her as a very special person. Sylvia has been a dedicated servant of the APA, FAA and QFA, and has worked tirelessly behind the scenes, and probably with little thanks at times.

  • 14

Today is our opportunity to say a very special thankyou to Sylvia for her dedication, professionalism, knowledge and wisdom, above and beyond the terms of service. Yours sincerely Christine Rothwell Jeanni Monks

APA Honorary Life Member Membership Nomination: Anita Ings

30th November, 2019 To the APA Committee, Narelle Duncan and I would like to nominate Anita Ings to be granted Honorary Life Membership of the APA Inc. in recognition of her many years of outstanding service to our organisation as well as to the profession of astrology in Australia. Anita’s contributions have been exceptional and of immeasurable benefit to the APA, the FAA Exam Board, and the FAA and AANSW. To say that Anita is a ‘treasure’ is an understatement. We on the APA Committee, both past and present, have relied heavily on her comprehensive knowledge. Her generosity of spirit, abundant expertise, and approachability has made her indispensable in contributing in no small measure to the stability of the APA. To have such a safety net has been and continues to be invaluable, as was demonstrated when Anita facilitated the tedious process of the APA re incorporation to NSW. Anita’s dedication to the field of astrology is further evidenced in her years of service on various astrology committees. In addition to being an APA Committee member and Treasurer for 11 years from 2003, Anita was FAA President from 2006 – 2012, and FAA Vice President from 2012 – 2016. Today Anita serves as the current FAA President after being re-elected in 2016. In addition to

  • 15

    15

these vast contributions, Anita has been co-convenor of two successful FAA International Astrology conferences and has always provided a helping hand at every conference before and after. Anita has served and continues to serve astrology in Australia through its various national and state organisations. She is considered a role model and mentor too many. Her commitment to astrology and to the education of astrologers we believe deserves to be acknowledged by the highest award the APA can bestow, that of Honorary Life Membership. Yours Sincerely Patricia Shepherd Narelle Duncan
