A 360-degree virtual tour of Elisabeth Murdoch Hall by ARUP

Back in December 2003, the brief for Elisabeth Murdoch Hall insisted that it ‘be ranked amongst the world’s great halls for its uncompromised acoustic, architecture and artistic program.’

Page 3: 2020 Concert Guideand their resident jazz band – made up of talented students from the Victorian College of the Arts – plays every Friday from 5pm. Bookings for pre-concert dining

Global design firm, ARUP made this a reality and following a rigorous two-year design phase, the Hall was ready to come to life.

As a gift to Melbourne Recital Centre in its 10th Anniversary year, ARUP has developed a 360-degree virtual tour of Elisabeth Murdoch Hall for music-lovers, architectural aficionados and acoustic enthusiasts to explore.

Here you can get up close to the hoop pine timber panels, unearth the view from the stage, discover fun facts about the acoustic design and more.

Visit melbournerecital.com.au/ARUP360 and go exploring.

Our 2020 season has been created with this in mind – bringing together some of the greatest performers from Australia and around the world, to create unforgettable musical moments to cherish. We celebrate the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth in a year-long festival of his music. Our contemporary music program continues to astonish with its breadth of talent and diversity, and we celebrate the best First Nations performers in Yinga-bul. Our Key Presenting Partners continue to offer an astounding array of richness in their programming, and we welcome them back to the Centre for another vibrant year of music.

We’re a place for all Victorians, and our activities also stretch Beyond the Centre – look out for our Local Heroes performers and others as they extend their reach into regional Victoria, and into aged care facilities as part of our Music Always program.

Each season is always full of surprises, of old favourites and of new discoveries – we hope that our 2020 season will inspire and delight you.

Marshall McGuire Director of Programming

Great music, great artists, a great venue – three ingredients for an unforgettable experience.

Born in Germany in 1770, Ludwig van Beethoven redefined music as we know it. His legacy contains some of the most expressive music ever written, bounding between heights of passion and joy and moments of complete and sober reflection.

2020 marks the composer’s 250th birthday year. What better way to celebrate the magnitude of his revolutionary music than with a survey of his piano concertos, performed by artists who have formed their own special relationships with Beethoven across a lifetime of listening and playing.

The five piano concertos were composed between 1795 and 1809 and have been treasured for more than 200 years. Melbourne Recital Centre’s Signature Event welcomes Kristian Bezuidenhout and Freiburg Baroque Orchestra to perform all five over two outstanding evenings.

Kristian Bezuidenhout is one of today’s most notable and exciting keyboard artists, equally at home on the fortepiano, harpsichord and

modern piano. His partnership with Freiburg Baroque Orchestra as artistic director has attracted high praise, in particular for their recordings of Mozart.

Hear the concertos as Beethoven imagined them, with the Orchestra’s standing-setting musicianship set off by Bezuidenhout’s ‘irrepressible imagination and vitality’ (The Guardian, U.K.).

Artist & Writer- in-Residence 2020Anna GoldsworthyAcclaimed pianist, writer and festival director Anna Goldsworthy is Melbourne Recital Centre’s Artist & Writer-in-Residence. As a pianist, Anna performs extensively throughout Australia and internationally. An accomplished chamber musician, Anna is a founding member of Seraphim Trio. As a writer, Anna was awarded Newcomer of the Year at the 2010 Australian Book Industry Awards for her debut memoir, Piano Lessons. Anna’s writing for the stage includes the libretto for Victorian Opera’s award-winning production of The Magic Pudding; her acclaimed adaptation of Piano Lessons, commissioned by the Queensland Music Festival; the play, Maestro, co-written with her father, Peter Goldsworthy; and the cabaret show Cole for Michael Griffiths, for which he won a Helpmann Award.

Anna’s residency includes performances with Seraphim Trio, and violinist Andrew Haveron; a talk/performance of excerpts from her new novel Melting Moments; and a creative workshop on a new work looking at the complex relationship of Chopin and George Sand.

‘ Melbourne Recital Centre has great sentimental value for me: it is not only my trio’s Melbourne home, but is the same age as my eldest child, and the first stage I ventured onto, three months after becoming a mother. But its value transcends the personal. The Centre offers the promise of being properly listened to, both because of its dream acoustics and the culture that has grown within it. I’m thrilled to be both artist-in-residence and writer-in-residence in 2020, and to explore the collision of these two roles in this ideal space.’ Anna GoldsworthySupported by The Vizard Foundation

Weyes Blood (U.S.A.)Weyes Blood is the moniker of California-based artist Natalie Mering. Titanic Rising, her fourth album, received unanimous critical acclaim. Re-imagining the Titanic disaster as a metaphor for climate catastrophe, Weyes Blood designs her own universe to soulfully navigate life’s mysteries. Manoeuvring through a space-time continuum, she intriguingly plays the role of melodic, sometimes melancholic, anthropologist.

Asia TOPA Festival 2020

Chi UdakaChi Udaka is an inspirational fusion of Japanese music and Indian dance. Inspired by the forces of nature, this celebratory show as part of AsiaTOPA 2020 is a meeting of the deep earthiness of taiko drumming (Chi - earth) and the flowing sensuality of dance (Udaka - water). At turns delicate and dramatic, it unites the powerful music of Taikoz with the intricate classical Indian dance movements of dance company Lingalayam, creating a kaleidoscope of aural-visual energy. A dynamic, cross-cultural partnership, the vocabulary of both companies is steeped in history and tradition and they now come together to break ground in an explosive feast for the senses. Taikoz has set itself apart as a phenomenon in the world of performance, renowned internationally for performances that couple explosive energy and extreme dynamism with refinement and grace. Chi Udaka is no exception.

He rouses our spirits, moves us to tears and inspires our most profound thoughts. Revolutionary, seminal, colossal — he is without challenge the face of Western music. To mark the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, Melbourne Recital Centre presents one of the largest explorations of the great master’s music in our time.
