FSU VS. VIRGINIA HISTORYThe Seminoles hold a 8-21-6 record against the Cavaliers in the all-time series between the two teams.

Florida State did not get its first win over Virginia until the 2011 ACC Tournament when the Noles secured a 2-1 victory in the semifinals on their way to FSU’s first ACC Championship.

Since that victory, Florida State is 8-5-2 against Virginia, including earning the 2014 ACC Championship and National Championship and the 2015 ACC Championship 7-6 in penalty kicks after ending the game with a 2-2 draw.

LOCKING DOWN UVAThe Cavaliers have only been shutout 29 times since 2010 (241 games), but seven of those shutouts have been against Florida State.

IT JUST TAKES ONE!Recently, the first goal of a game involving FSU and Virginia ends up being the game-winner as seven of the last 10 contests have ended in a 1-0 score.

FSU earned a trio of 90-minute 1-0 victories in 2014 and also defeated the Cavaliers by the same score in overtime in 2012.

In 2013, a golden goal for Virginia gave UVA a 1-0 overtime victory over the Seminoles, while a penalty kick in Charlottesville gave Virginia the 1-0 win on October 25, 2015.

Last season both games were decided by one

goal

FSU has finished no lower than second place (including ties) in the ACC 11 times (2005-10, 2012-15, 2019) over the last 15 years, claiming three regular season titles (2009, 2012 and 2014).

32020 FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLE SOCCER • 2014 & 2018 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

ONE OF THE NATION’S BEST DEFENSES Five games into the 2020 season the Florida State defense has been almost impenetrable, only allowing 10 shots, six of which were on goal. The Seminole back line led by Malia Berkely, Emily Madril, Gabby Carle and Kirsten Pavlisko combine for 14 years of experience as they help protect freshman goalkeeper Cristina Roque.

Florida Sate is third in the country in GAA with a 0.200 GAA.

The back line has some offensive threat to it as well as they have combined for 10 career goals and 31 career assists. In 2020 they have combined for two goals (Madril) and one assist (Berkely).

With shutouts in the first four games of the season, the Seminoles had shutout their first four opponents for the second time in program history.

With four straight shutouts to start ACC play, Florida State had shutout out their first four conference foes for the third time in program history.

HOT START IN THE ACCFlorida State has started the ACC Schedule 5-0 four times and have been unbeaten through the first five games of the ACC schedule six times.

Brown Was also the second youngest player (17 years old) to play in the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

IMPACT FRESHMENFlorida State has started two freshmen and played five through the first four games of the season.

Cristina Roque became the second true freshman to start in goal for Mark Krikorian and first since Erin McNulty did in 2007. The last two redshirt freshmen to start in goal in the season opener (Cassie Miller - 2014 and Brooke Bollinger - 2018) helped lead the Seminoles to the ACC Championship game and those teams eventually went on to the National Championship.

Jody Brown showed the country what she could do in the opener, scoring in her first career collegiate game, joining teammate Heather Payne who did it a season ago. Brown stayed hot in the Seminoles third game of the season, tying the team lead in goals scored with her second of the season against Virginia Tech. She has taken eight shots through five games with five of those shots on frame. Brown earned her first career assist against Pitt.

BENCH SCORING The Seminoles showed firepower coming off the bench with nine out of their 18 goals on the season coming from non starters.

Coming in with fresh legs 15+ minutes into the first half, Yujie Zhao and Jenna Nighswonger have shown their talent combining for six goals (Zhao - 3, Nighswonger - 3) and three assists (Nighswonger - 3). Freshmen Jody Brown proved why she was such a highly touted recruit as well, getting a goal in her first game in the Garnet and Gold and her second against Virginia Tech. Ran Iwai rounds out the bench scoring with a goal of her own.

Florida State’s bench scoring has shown the amount of depth on the Seminole roster as former National Freshman of the Year (Yujie Zhao) and former All-ACC Freshman Team member (Jenna Nighswonger) are able to come off the bench.

MADRIL’S RETURNAfter missing the last two season due to knee injuries, Emily Madril found the back of the goal in her first game back.

The center back played all 90 minutes in her first game back since 2017 and scored her second career goal and first since October 5 of her freshman season.

Through five games Madril has played every minute and has scored two goals.

ACC PRESEASON POLLAfter earning ACC Championships in six of the last nine seasons, the Florida State soccer program is again expected to have a strong season in 2020 as the Seminoles were voted to finish second in the league with 123 points and three first place votes.

FSU tallied 123 points and trailed only North Carolina who received 129 points and eight first-place votes.

The Noles were one of two schools to place three members on the 2020 Preseason All-ACC Women’s Soccer Team – redshirt senior Malia Berkely, junior Jaelin Howell and junior Yujie Zhao

FRESH FACESThe Seminoles welcome 6 newcomers to the squad in 2020. The six freshmen hail from four different countries. The United States (Cristina Roque, Lauren Flynn and Kaitlyn Zipay), Sweden (Linn Bogren), Japan (Ran Iwai) and Jamaica (Jody Brown).

Two different Seminoles freshmen have started (Roque/Zipay) with three more contributing off of the bench.

Jody Brown is second on the team in goals scored with two. She scored in her first game as a Seminole against Notre Dame and then again against Virginia Tech in the third game of the season. She earned her first assist against Pitt.

Howell has helped lead one of the nation’s best defense in 2020 from her holding midfield position. The Seminoles have only allowed one goal through the first five games of the season and have only allowed 10 shots, six on goal.

On October 8th it was announced that Jaelin Howell is one of four collegiate and 27 players invited to the US Women’s National Team Camp Oct. 18-28.

In her redshirt senior season, Malia Berkely has been a mainstay in the Florida State lineup on the back line. Berkely has started in all 78 games she has played in and has only missed 28 minutes of action during the past two seasons.

Berkely has helped anchor a back line that has recorded 45 shutouts in her four seasons on the pitch.

She is also a threat on the offensive side of the ball, recording four goals and 14 assists during the past four seasons as she is threat anytime she dribbles the ball up the field.

The 2019 season placed Berkely amongst the FSU greats as she was named a First Team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches and was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year.

Berkely has helped lead one of the nation’s best defenses in 2020 from her center back position. The Seminoles have only allowed one goal through the first five games of the season and have only allowed 10 shots, six on goal.

She continued to show that she is not just a defender as she recorded her 15th career assist in the Seminole’s season opener against Notre Dame.

MALIA BERKELY

In 16 seasons under head coach Mark Krikorian, the Seminoles have been a force on the defensive side of the ball, allowing . 74 goals per game in 36 games.

The Seminoles have also recorded 212 shutouts, good for shutouts in over half the games played under Krikorian. Florida State has earned a shutout in over 76 percent of their wins in the past 16 seasons.

Since Mike Bristol joined Mark Krikorian’s staff in 2009 the Seminoles have averaged a .69 GAA in 11 seasons. In those 11 season, the Seminoles have averaged 14 shutouts a season, reaching double-digit shutouts in 10 of his 11 seasons.

Krikorian and Bristol’s defense was on full display during the 2014 National Championship run, when the Seminoles outscored their opponents 70-9 throughout the season. Florida State set an NCAA Record with 19 shutouts and a school record with a GAA of .34. FSU only allowed 2 goals in ACC play and finished the season with a 24-1-1 record.

In 2016 they did it once again, allowing a program low nine goals in a season. FSU finished the season with 12 shutouts, while allowing under half a goal per games.

Florida State’s magnificent defense was on display once again during their 2018 National Championship run. The Seminoles allowed just 13 goals on their way to yet another 20 win season. FSU started the season off holding their opponent off the scoreboard for the first five games of the season. Florida State would go on to do that 11 more times on their way to 16 shutouts in 2018. The Seminole defense was in full force during the NCAA Tournament, recording four shutouts in five games, including the final three of the NCAA Tournament with shutout wins over the three previous national champions.

Viewed as the quarterback of the Seminole offense in the holding midfield position, Jaelin Howell has been an impact player for the Seminoles since she stepped on campus.

2020 looks a lot like years past as the Seminoles have recorded shutouts in their first four games, out-shooting their opponents by a combined 78-7. FSU has only allowed three shots on goal in four games and held All-ACC Preseason member Emina Ekic to zero shots.

Through four games, Florida State has the nation’s best defense, recording a 0.00 GAA. Three other teams in the country have not allowed a goal but FSU is the only team to do so with four games played.

This season the Seminoles have shutout their first four opponents for only the second time in program history and their first four ACC opponents for the third time in program history.

The junior from Lone Tree, Colorado has raked in the honors since first stepping on campus in 2018. As a freshman, she was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team and Second Team All-ACC. Making an impact in the Seminole’s 2018 National Championship run as a freshman,

Howell was named to the College Cup All-Tournament Team and was named the

College Cup Most Outstanding Player on Defense.

Her sophomore campaign was not much different, earning All-ACC First Team honors and Second Team All-Region honors.

Howell is an aerial threat winning balls in the

midfield and on set pieces, proving that when she headed in her first goal of the season against Virginia Tech on a corner kick. In three seasons she has earned 7 goals and 8 assists, while helping to lead the Seminoles to 43 wins in just over two

seasons.

An artist with the ball is what many call Yujie Zhao. In her first three season at Florida State, Zhao has accounted for 41 points (15 goals and 11 assists)

As a freshman, Yujie was a force to be reckoned with, scoring seven goals (second most on the team) and recording five more assists (third on the team) on her way to helping the Seminole earn their second National Championship.

Her performance as freshman helped her to earn All-ACC First Team honors and paced her on the United Soccer Coaches All-American Second Team. That was not it, Zhao was named TopDrawerSoccer’s National Freshman of the Year

Zhao backed that up with an impressive sophomore campaign. She finished her season tied for third on the team with five goals and second with six assists. On her way to her second First Team All-ACC honor.

Zhao’s creativity not only makes her better but helps out the entire team as it opens up windows for her teammates to get looks on goal.

In Zhao’s three seasons in Tallahassee, the Seminoles have

score 119 goals while recording 102 assists.

Zhao has started off 2020 on fire, scoring two goals in just

three shots in the opener against Notre Dame as she came in off the bench and played 67 Minutes. Zhao is tied for the team lead in goals three goals in 284 minutes off of the bench.

• The Florida State vs. Florida game this season was attended by 3,154 fans as the Noles defeated the Gators 2-1.

• Over the last 14 seasons, Florida State has had a crowd of over 2,000 fans 15 times.

• In the 21 years at the Seminole Soccer Complex the Seminoles have finished undefeated at home six times.

• In those 21 seasons, the Seminoles had double digit wins at home 10 times.

• Florida State went 13-2 at home during the 2019 season with their only losses coming to No. 1 Virginia 1-0 in overtime and to No. 7 NCAA Quarterfinal.

The Seminole Soccer Complex is home to the three longest home unbeaten streaks in school history. From 2005 to 2007, FSU recorded a 24-game unbeaten streak as the Garnet and Gold went 22-0-2, out-scoring the opposition 76-10. From 2014 to 2017 the Noles posted a 36-game unbeaten streak at home, ending just one shy of the school-record unbeaten streak of 37 games (36-0-1) from 2011 to 2014, which sits ninth in NCAA history.
