Dear Chamber Members,
The final year of the decade has come and gone. I would like to sincerely thank all of you who have served, from Board of Directors, to the Ambassadors, to the CVB Advisory Board, and all committees in between.
Serving as the chair for the past year was a privilege and honor. The past year we made strides in bringing the chamber together with the entities under its umbrella by opening communications while creating a greater regional impact. We continue to work to make South Sioux City and the Siouxland Area a great place to live, work and play.
I would like to thank Siouxland Bank for giving me the opportunity and support to serve our community and grow with our community. Siouxland Bank has had an active part in the chamber for nearly 40 years. As a locally owned bank, Siouxland Bank understands and supports local businesses.
With the challenges ahead in 2020, I am confident that Bart Gotch’s past experiences coupled with his passion for the chamber and its members will lead us through the challenges at hand. I ask for your continued support of the Chamber staff, Board of Directors, and Ambassadors during 2020 and beyond.

Dear Chamber Members,
Due to some changes at the executive committee, I was asked to “pinch hit” again for the South Sioux City Area Chamber of Commerce.
Having been Chairman in 2000, 2009-2010, and now becoming your incoming chair for 2020, I hope to provide some historical perspective, some general guidance and leadership.
As we move into this new year, we will collectively work on upcoming vision– how appropriate as when moving into the year “20/20”.
Our vision and focus will be based our guidance and efforts on the following:
l Effective Communicationl Effective Follow-throughl Effective Networkingl A Value-Added product ...to its members and to our communiy.
I have been blessed to have lived, worked, and played in this community for nearly 30 years.
Our community has a lot going for it but especially its people, businesses, educational opportunities, and that small-town feeling.
I look forward to working directly with the Executive Board, Chamber Board as well as all of our Chamber members to improve upon the chamber’s mission and community’s attributes.
Thank you for your confidence and working alongside me in 2020.

SSC Police to have extra
offi cers on dutyIf you’re going to
be driving around the South Sioux City area t h is T han k sg iv i ng weekend, be prepared to see more offi cers out on the roads.
The South Sioux city Police Department, in conjunction with the Nebraska Department of Roads, will be us-ing funds provided by a grant to put extra offi cers on the street between Wednesday, Nov. 27 and Sunday, Dec. 1. Offi cers will be targeting drivers who are not using seatbelts, car seats or other occu-pant restraint systems. The hope is that this effort will reduce the
number of accidents with injuries in our area.
“We are asking the public to please use the restraint systems in their cars this holiday season as we begin traveling more and more,” said Chris Cher-nock, operations su-pervisor for the South Sioux City Police De-partment. “After the enforcement period, we will release the statistics of what cita-tions were issued. As always, it is not our goal to write tickets or take anyone to jail, but to try and help create a safer environment for the motoring public.”

Senator Joni Albrecht of Thurston announced late last week that she will seek re-election to the Nebraska Leg-islature in District 17 which includes Dakota, Thurston, and Wayne counties in Northeast Nebraska.
“In my first term in the Legislature I’ve fought for Northeast Nebraska and will continue to do so,” said Senator Albrecht. “I have worked to grow economic opportunity and protect our values in Lin-coln. I am proud of my work including championing pro-life bills, protecting our second amendment rights, ensuring our children receive a quality education and fi ghting to bring meaningful property tax relief to our ag producers, small busi-
nesses and homeowners.”In the Legislature, Senator
Albrecht served on the Agri-culture Committee and as the chair of the Business and Labor Committee being the fi rst wom-an and fi rst freshman senator to do so. She now serves on the Natural Resources, State-Tribal Relations, and Transporta-tion and Telecommunications Committees. Additionally, she is a member of the Nebraska Economic Development Task Force which works with the Department of Economic De-velopment and the Department of Labor to monitor and craft long-range strategic plans to improve economic develop-ment within the state.
Senator Albrecht was born and raised in Sarpy County
where she served on the Papil-lion City Council for eight years and on the Sarpy County Board for four years. Professionally, Joni worked in the automobile industry as an employee of Huber Chevrolet for 33 years. In 2010 Joni married Mike Al-brecht and moved to Thurston County where she became involved in agriculture.
Married to a fourth genera-tion farmer, Joni shares in the day-to-day operation of their farm which includes a cow/calf operation, a small feedlot, corn and soybeans. Joni is a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Emerson and the Women’s Legion Auxiliary in Emerson. Joni and her husband Mike have six grown children and 12 grandchildren.

It’s one of the most unique auditoriums in all of high school sports in Nebraska, and it’s celebrating a birthday next month.
The South Sioux City Mini-Dome opened its doors for the fi rst Cardinal basketball game on Thursday, Dec. 6, 1968, with an 85-47 Cardinal victory over LeMars, Iowa, and school offi cials are celebrating the dome’s 50th anniversary with a variety of memorabilia and alumni games that will be part of a party at the school on Saturday, Dec. 21.
The Mini-Dome was built as part of a unique school build-ing structure that was built as part of a $1.95 million bond issue approved by local voters in the spring of 1966. The en-tire structure, including the fi ve-hexagon school and the
attached round gymnasium, was built for a total cost of $2,002,134.
Try to build such a structure today? Probably not going to happen, according to school communications and founda-tion director Lance Swanson.
“I think we would struggle to fi nd a contractor or build-er excited to take on such a unique design now,” he said. “Due to engineering and con-struction costs, most new gyms are very much rectangle boxes. We are very fortunate to have the premiere place to watch high school basketball in the state, if not the Midwest.”
The unique structure is known as a Buckminister Fuller Dome, a geodesic roof that is constructed similar to a spider’s web. There are no sup-porting columns and the clear span rests only on exterior

The City of South Sioux City isn’t going to wait on the fate of its wastewater treatment needs any longer.
On a 6-0 vote Monday eve-ning, the City Council voted to go ahead with a resolution that sets the Request For Qualifi ca-tions (RFQ) for a new wastewa-ter treatment plant that could cost as much as $50 million to build.
The decision by the City Council (council members Lupe
Gonzalez and Carol Schuldt were absent) to move ahead with the resolution for the new wastewater treatment plan came after the City of Sioux City noted a “lack of response” from their southern neighbor on ne-gotiating a new agreement after Sioux City stuck South Sioux City, North Sioux City and Ser-geant Bluff with a double-digit increase in its sewer rate for the coming year.
Sioux City has indicated that it will no longer accept waste-water from the four smaller communities, and once that
fi nal determination is formal-ized, South Sioux City will have four years to disconnect and construct a new wastewater treatment facility to handle the city’s wastewater.
“We are not sitting back and waiting for things to happen,” South Sioux City Rod Koch said at Monday’s meeting. “It’s hap-pening.”
The resolution will allow the city to seek assistance in engi-neering plans for a new waste-water treatment plant that would be built east of the Tyson lagoons just east of the city’s in-
dustrial area and about a mile west of the Missouri River. HDR and JEO engineering fi rms are beginning design work on the plant, and are expected to be about 30 percent through the process by February, thanks to a recommendation by the city’s Public Works committee that was also approved at Monday’s meeting.
The City Council also ap-proved a Public Works commit-tee recommendation to request a 30-year loan agreement on the facility.
Mayor: city not going to wait on wastewater issue

The Mini-Dome at South Sioux City High School can hold up to 3,000 fans for sporting events and has played host to a number of exciting high school matchups, including this game from last year (below).
This photo, taken from an old issue of the Dakota County Star, shows an overhead look at the South Sioux City High School and Mini-Dome when it was opened in 1968. Built for just over $2 million, it includes the only domed high school gymnasium in the state of Nebraska.

COURTESY PHOTOA coff ee honoring retiring Public Works director Bob Liver-more was held prior to Monday’s meeting of the South Sioux City City Council. Livermore has directed the city’s Public Works division for the last eight years and will offi cially retire from the position next spring.
