The Pioneer NanoBioTechnology Conference

Dr. Alain Donzel and Prof. Philippe Renaud launched the first NanoBioTech-Montreux conference in 1997. At that time, this was the first conference, worldwide, that focused on the application of micro and nanotechnologies to challenges in the Life Sciences. The conference takes place yearly around November in the beautiful setting of Montreux. Lasting 2½ days, it consists of single-track oral sessions, pitch-like oral presentations and poster sessions.

The goal was to create a unique forum for discussing the latest developments and perspectives at the interface between nanotechnology, the life sciences and medicine. To promote discussion, the format of the conference has since the beginning been intentionally kept compact, with about 120 participants. Over the years, the conference has earned the reputation as the best small conference in this field.

A showcase for the very best invited speakers

NanoBioTech-Montreux is a human-scale focused conference at the frontiers of Micro- and Nano- technologies, with an emphasis on Biological, Chemical and Medical applications. The format includes plenary talks from invited speakers of international renown who give lectures on key developments in the field, together with a variety of short oral presentations of new research. Over the past years, the conference has attracted many of the best-known researchers in the field of nanobiotechnology who gave keynote or invited lectures (a list of names is provided in the annex). The conference is well known as an excellent place for discussing research trends with major players in the field.

A tradition for promoting young researchers

NanoBioTech-Montreux has a long tradition for the promotion of the work of early career researchers, providing an excellent opportunity to meet World experts in BioMEMS and

NanoBioTechnologies. Because of the compact nature of the conference and the focused approach, the PhD students have the opportunity to meet these experts and discuss their research with them. Student feedback has been very positive; for many of them this is the first time talking in front of international audience. The compact and friendly conference has also always provided an excellent environment for students to establish new contacts and broader their opportunity to get postdoc positions in new labs. Every year, the conference awards three poster prizes that recognise the most innovative research projects.

Dynamic poster session

The poster sessions are very important in this conference. The 2 minutes, pitch-like introductory oral presentations have been extremely successful and highly appreciated by all participants. Unlike many other conferences, these make for appealing sessions that are regularly fully attended.

An independent, non-profit organization

It is a non-profit event which is organized under the responsibility of the NanoBioTech Association, a dedicated team created specifically to cater for the needs of the conference. As a not for profit organization the conference runs with minimal costs, allocating all revenues from registrations and sponsoring to the meeting. In order to encourage young researchers to attend, a special discount rate is given to PhD students.
