One-Act Play General Information
II. Awards: Awards will be given as specified in the current handbook for One-Act Play. The announcement of advancing plays, presentation of awards, and oral critique will follow the last performance as soon as the judges are ready with their decision. III. Fees & Charges: Each school will be assessed a fee of $450.00 to help defray the expenses of the contest. IV. For Your Convenience: Student members of the Texas A&M University-Commerce, Department of Theatre, will serve as technical crews for the production. Furthermore, each school will have a student staff member as a guide to assist in the unloading of scenery pieces and props and to answer questions that may arise. V. Rehearsals: You will have exactly one hour on the stage. You will be permitted to enter the stage on the hour, and you must be off by the end of the hour. A complete run-through of your play may not be possible. You will find your rehearsal period of greatest value if you spend your time on difficult scenes and technical rehearsal.

One-Act Play General Information VI. Scenery:The basic pieces for the UIL Unit Set will be available at the contest site. In addition to the basic pieces to the UIL set the following pieces will also be provided: One (1) right hung door, one (1) left hung door, and one (1) French door, and one (1) window unit. Please bring with you only those scenic pieces specifically approved by the League. If you wish to inquire about specific pieces, please contact the Contest Manager. VII. Playing Space:The theatre facility has an open stage or modified thrust/apron with a proscenium opening of 36 feet. From the front of the stage to the proscenium at centerline is approximately 18 feet. Black curtains will be hung upstage of the proscenium to provide side exits and backing. The final black crossover will be hung approximately 18 feet upstage of the proscenium. The act curtain is not used (plays usually start from a blackout). This variation in the rules, due to the architecture of the building, has been approved by the league for all schools at this contest. VIII. Timekeeping:There will be three timekeepers: two in the auditorium and one backstage to record the times of the plays. Time schedules will be strictly adhered to, in accordance with UIL rules governing same. IX. Operation of Equipment:An experienced crew from Texas A&M University-Commerce will be on hand to assist you with the technical production of your play. The light and sound consoles will be operated by your students, with assistance from our local crew. In either case, your students should expect to assist the local crews. X. Lighting: The Texas A&M University Commerce Theatre is equipped with an ETC ION XE 20 lighting console, controlling 296 dimmers. During your performance, your lighting technician may either operate lighting cues that you have stored in the computer during your rehearsal time or manually control the dimmers, via pre-set sub-masters. Enclosed is a simplified plan of the areas, which can be grouped as nine sub masters if schools wish to work with this simpler concept. Lights will be pre-set to cover all acting areas. Lighting cues can either be manually operated by using pre-set sub-masters or written as cues. There will be a lighting key provided so that you may understand how the areas are set up. The intensity of light is usually regulated to suit your needs, however, elaborate or special color effects cannot be provided. Lights cannot be generally re-set for any one play. One or two specials per play may be available for each play if they are requested in advance. Color washes will be available by way of LED instrumentation. These instruments allow for a wide range of color choices.

One-Act Play General Information
XI. Sound:The Texas A&M University- Commerce Theatre is equipped with a 24 channel Allen & Health sound console. Basic mixing is possible. Sound can come from two proscenium mounted speakers. Fading is possible left–to-right. You may bring your sound cues/design on compact disc, laptop computer, or Mp3 music device. Standard inputs (1/8” “headphone style” jack to L/R stereo) from these devices to our sound console will be available. You may bring your own sound system, if it is kept off the stage (see rules), but it must either stand-alone or be compatible with our system. However your sound system/design is comprised, it is your responsibility to make sure, in advance, that it is compatible with our sound system. Offstage locations for your sound systems have a view of the stage through video monitors. XII. Unload: Schools should unload at the Performing Arts Center on the Texas A&M University- Commerce campus. The Performing Arts Center is located next to HWY 24 overlooking Gee Lake. Enter the campus from W. Neal Street (accessible from Culver St.) and proceed to Lot 35 (please see attached campus map or visit https://www.tamuc.edu/aboutus/thecampus/campusmap.pdf). The loading dock for the theatre is located on the southwest side of the PAC, facing the parking lot. Load-in will be through the loading dock door on the southwest corner of the building. Each school will be assigned an 8’X10’ space in the scene shop in which to store props, costumes, etc. until needed on stage, which is located directly across the hall from the shop. XIII. Parking: We request that all buses and trucks park in Lot 19 located at the intersection of Bois d’Arc Street and Walnut Street (see attached campus map) after they have unloaded scenery and participants. Parking for individual cars, including handicapped parking, can be found in Lot 35 next to the PAC. Alternative parking lots include: Lot 2 (near the stadium), Lots 21 and 23 (near the Student Access and Success Center), and parallel parking spots around Gee Lake and on University Drive. Please notify all family and friends attending the contest in individual cars to arrive early enough to allow time to find parking and walk to the PAC (we suggest arriving at least 20-30 minutes early). Per UIL rules, absolutely no late seating is allowed. Additionally, please go to the university website to print out a temporary parking pass (https://apps.tamuc.edu/Visitorparking/). Our parking is limited at the university, so we encourage ride-sharing with family and friends that may attend the contest.
