OF GREATER SCOTTSDALE

Formed in 1961, the Scottsdale Charros are an all-volunteer group of business and civic leaders dedicated to providing support and funding for youth programs, educational scholarships and grants to

local charities. With a history of innovative fundraising, the Charros have leveraged spring training baseball as a chief economic driver in Scottsdale. Funds raised through the sale of Charro Lodge passes and stadium advertising are donated back to the community, making the Charros one of the community’s largest philanthropic contributors.

Spring Training is the premier annual fundraising event for the Charros, we welcome more than 200,000 people during the month of March to Scottsdale Stadium, making it one of the top destinations for Spring baseball. When you purchase a Charro Lodge ticket or take advantage of Spring Training advertising opportunities, you are supporting our schools and our community.

“Market your business to thousands of Major League Baseball fans during spring training!”

A mong the most thrill-

ing events in baseball,

walk-off wins were

plentiful for the 2018

Giants, who captured

a division-leading 10

of them last year. From their 42

home victories, almost one in four

ended on a Giants’ walk-off hit that

included a rare 1-0 home run and a

pitcher’s game-ending RBI.

The first of many walk-offs

came on April 7th during the

team’s opening homestand against

the Dodgers, a game that would

last over five hours and find the

Giants trailing by one run going

into the bottom of the 14th in-

ning. Against 6-4 righty Wilmer

Font (the tenth Dodger pitcher),

consecutive singles by Kelby

Tomlinson and Joe Panik set the

stage for Andrew McCutchen, who

was working on a five-hit night.

With a 2–2 count after fouling off 7

pitches, McCutchen blasted Font’s

twelfth pitch deep into the left-

field stands for a three-run, game-

winning home run. McCutchen’s

sixth hit of the day proved costly to

Font, who was designated for as-

signment less than a month later.

The Giants foreshadowed another

of their exciting game-enders dur-

ing the first two days of the season.

After beating Clayton Kershaw, 1–0,

with a home run in the season open-

er on the road, Panik silenced the LA

crowd with a ninth-inning home run

off Kenley Jansen to win game two.

Panik, who wound up with only four

home runs in an injury-shortened

season, became the first player in

MLB history with home runs in back

to back 1–0 wins.

A relative rarity, the Giants

would win their third 1–0 game

of the season on June 27 by way

of the home run—this time in

walk-off fashion, when Brandon

Crawford went deep off Colorado

rookie Harrison Musgrave with one

out in the ninth.

Since 2010, Panik and Crawford

are the only Giants to have hit

home runs in 1–0 wins:

Among those games was the

1963 classic 16-inning, 1–0 win

over the Braves where Hall of

Famers Juan Marichal and Warren

Spahn both went the distance,

until Willie Mays ended it with

a one-out home run through the

wind and over the left field fence

at Candlestick Park. Mays, who

had thrown out a runner at home

earlier in the game, had also

hit his first career home run off

Spahn back in 1951, and would

ultimately compile 18 against him.

Marichal tossed 227 pitches in the

victory and was back out on the

mound after 4 day’s rest to face the

Cardinals. Spahn, the winningest

lefty of all-time, threw 201 pitches

and would end up finishing his

career as a Giant two years later.

In a rematch of the exciting 2016

NLDS, the Giants gained a measure

of satisfaction with two walk-off

wins in three days against the

Cubs shortly before the All-Star

break (July 9–11). The first of these

involved the electrifying base

running of Alen Hanson. Trailing

1–0 in the fifth inning against

Kyle Hendricks, the Giants tied the

score without the benefit of a hit.

After reaching first on a fielder’s

choice, Hanson was promptly

picked off, but first baseman

Anthony Rizzo missed the ball

as the throw went down the right

field line. Hanson began his mad

dash—racing around second and

third, then reaching high gear as

he headed for home plate. With the

relay throw arriving just as he did,

Hanson dove away from the catch-

er in a cloud of dust and swipe

tagged the corner of the plate to tie

the score. Pablo Sandoval’s bases-

loaded single in the 11th inning

plated the walk-off game-winner.

Two days later on July 11, the

Giants jumped out to a 4–0 lead in

the first before the Cubs chipped

away to tie the game and go into ex-

tra innings. After Dereck Rodríguez

tossed 3.0 scoreless, hitless in-

nings, the Giants rallied with two

outs in the home 13th. With runners

on first and second, Buster Posey

lined a ball over the right fielder’s

head for the walk-off hit.

The Giants would again win

a bittersweet 1–0 walk-off game

on August 28 in San Francisco.

Arizona almost scored in the eighth

inning, but a strong relay from

rookie center fielder Steven Duggar

to Crawford to Nick Hundley nailed

Nick Ahmed at the plate to end the

frame. In the ninth, Duggar walked

and reached second on Hundley’s

single. But when diving back into

the bag, Duggar dislocated his

shoulder—which could have ended

his season right there. But instead,

Duggar refused to come out of the

game and scored the winning run

on a next-pitch single by Gorkys

Hernández. Duggar’s season was

indeed over after that game, but it

showed the spirit and will to win of

this promising young player.

Bumgarner joins Exclusive Club

with walk-off hitA true rarity took place in a

5–4 walk-off win over San Diego

on September 25 when pitcher

Madison Bumgarner drove in the

winning run as a pinch-hitter

in the 12th inning. Following a

Hernández triple, Bumgarner

lashed a hard grounder between

short and third for the game win-

ner. It marked the first time in 28

In the years following his retire-ment, McCovey remained a regular fixture during the Cactus League seasons in Arizona, still working for the team as a senior advisor right up until last year. After a brief 11-game, end-of-season stint in Oakland, where he failed to hit even one American League home run, McCovey was re-signed as a free-agent to the Giants in 1977, spending his final three-

And in a wheelchair, it’s not normal to see an athlete of his stature in a wheelchair,” recalled Jenkins.Perhaps the most beloved of all the San Francisco Giants, McCovey never played for the team in New York, and was pretty much the San Francisco franchise’s first home-grown star to emerge from the minors. His appeal extended beyond his accomplishments on the field, which had a lot to do with his kind and friendly persona.

“As a fellow ballplayer, I felt he was a gentle giant,” said Jenkins adding, “He always spoke to you. Always shook your hand if he saw you at the stadium or anywhere else. He was just an individual that was a perfect gentleman, and he carried himself in that manner. He was a San Francisco Giant, and back then they had many popular guys, but Willie stood out.” ◆

McCovey returned to Phoenix Municipal Stadium with the Giants every spring until 1973, when he was traded to the San Diego Padres at the conclusion of the regular season. The Padres conducted their team’s spring training operations in Yuma, Arizona, where the photo on McCovey’s peculiar 1974 Topps card appears to have been taken (or possibly taken in Casa Grande). McCovey is wearing an obviously-airbrushed Padres cap with the word “Washington” and an abbre-viated “NAT’L LEA.” printed along the card’s upper and lower borders.Prior to the 1974 season, there was speculation that the Padres
