2020 Virtual Dementia Education Series for HealthcareProfessionals

This presentation will review the contents of
Arthur Kleinman's recent book The Soul of Care
with specific regard to obstacles to effective
caregiving by health professionals and families
and the ways they can be overcome. The
presentation outlines the elements of quality care
and what it takes to achieve them in practice.
Drawing upon his own experience as a physician
with long-term interest in doctor-patient
relationships and on his more recent experience
of being the primary caregiver for his late wife
Joan who passed of younger onset Alzheimer's
disease.

Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias are
becoming increasingly prevalent, especially with
the demographic of an aging population. This
presentation reviews current evidence for
screening patients for cognitive changes,
recognizing delirium in patients with acute
confusional states, and conducting screening for
the present of depression which can also impact
function, cognition, and may overlap with a
variety of medical and psychiatric conditions.

The newly released Alzheimer’s Association
Dementia Care Practice Recommendations
outline quality care practices based on a
comprehensive review of current evidence, best
practice and expert opinions. This presentation
will provide an overview of the recommendations
and describe how care providers can use these
recommendations to impact person-centered care
in their care settings.
