The Reason for Gifts

Look around your church and you will see many gifts. You will see those who sing and those who read, those who preach and those who greet. You will see some who feed the hungry and others who serve on committees. You will see some who decorate and others who converse. Some have a gift for leading prayer, for parenting children, or for making people feel at home. Everybody has some gift.

Still, not all gifts are equal. Some people excel at their gifts. Others exercise them less capably. The quality of the gift is not that important. It is important to exercise the gift, whatever its extent may be. The use of our gifts releases the power of the Spirit. St. Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit.” God gives gifts for a reason. They are meant to be nurtured and used. The gifts manifest the Spirit. When used properly, they draw attention to God who gives, not to the person who has received.

The manifold gifts within one community show the marvels of the Holy Spirit. When people share their gifts, they create a spirit of selflessness and inspire others to service. They help everyone appreciate the goodness of God, who gives even before we ask.

When people look at you, they also see gifts. For which gifts are you most grateful? How do you share them?

PENTECOST SUNDAY - MAY 31, 2020

Are You Thirsting For God?

Are you someone who would like to learn more about your Catholic Faith? Do you know someone not baptized or baptized in a non-Catholic Christian tradition, who is thirsting for what it means to become Catholic?

Do you know someone already Catholic but has not yet re-ceived Confirmation & Communion?

Others may be thirsting too…

For each of us faith is a journey marked with moments of conversion along the way…we move from unbelief to initial faith, from sin to repentance, from painful isolation to the joyful experience of a loving community, from fear to love.

Faith, conversion, repentance, celebration and community ---five basic elements that are present in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). The RCIA provides a setting where the journey of faith and moments of conversion can be cele-brated within the local Church community.

RCIA is a place to ask questions and seek understanding. Come and See! Invite a friend! All are Welcome! RCIA meets Sunday’s at Little Flower School from 10:15 A.M. to 11:15 A.M. For more information, contact the Parish Office at (301)994-0525.

Like Mary and Joseph, families have a

mission to welcome Jesus into their

homes and lives, to “listen to him, speak

with him, take care of him, protect him

and grow with him, and in this way

improve the world.” -Pope Francis

Sunday Faith Formation serves all parish children.

Weekly sessions for Pre-K through 8th Grade meet

on Sundays from 10:15am to 11:20am. Two years

of faith formation are usually required prior to

reception of the Sacraments of First Reconciliation,

Eucharist and Confirmation. We always welcome

new team members as catechists, substitutes, hall

monitors and teen assistants.

Faith Formation Calendar

Classes have ended for this school year. We look forward to seeing you in

September.

In these trying times we all need a little boost. Please consider joining our small, informal Bible Study group as we continue or study on David and the Psalms. This series was written by Fr. Joseph Ponessa and Laurie Watson Manhardt, and covers the Book of Psalms, Ruth, and 1 and 2 Samuel with video presentations to help expand upon what is read. For more information please and the zoom meeting number call or text Susan Baker at 301-904-7404.

Knights of Columbus

Grand Knight Charles Shilling

301-535-8339 [email protected]

A Message from Supreme Knight, Carl A. Anderson - Venerable Father Michael McGivney

It is with particular joy that I write to share with you the news that, at Noon today in Rome, the Vatican announced the formal recognition of a miracle attributed to our founder, Venerable Father Michael McGivney.

With this announcement, a Mass of Beatification will soon be scheduled.

This joyful news is the culmination of many years of determined effort, and I ask for your continued and increased prayers as we prepare for the day when our founder will be known as “Blessed Michael McGivney.”

The Vatican announcement can be found below:

Decrees of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints

On May 26, 2020, the Holy Father Francis received in audience His Eminence Cardinal Angelo Becciu, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. During the audience, the Supreme Pontiff authorized the same Congregation to promulgate the Decrees regarding:

[…] the miracle, attributed to the intercession of the Venerable Servant of God Michael McGivney, Diocesan Priest, Founder of the Order of the Knights of Columbus; born on August 12, 1852 in Waterbury (United States of America) and died in Thomaston (United States of America) on August 14, 1890; Venerable Michael McGivney was the founder of the Knights of Columbus, now the world’s largest Catholic fraternal organization. After studies in Canada and the United States, he was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop James Gibbons in Baltimore. He founded the Knights of Columbus as a mutual aid society, geared especially to working men and their families. He was known for his tireless work among his parishioners. He died at the early age of 38 from pneumonia.

I would ask each brother Knight to learn more about our founder at the newly updated Father McGivney Guild website where the Order will also regularly post news and updates related to the beatification.

And if you would like to learn even more about our founder’s heroic life and continuing legacy, please consider reading Father McGivney’s biography, Parish Priest, and the newly-released book The Knights of Columbus: An Illustrated History.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE OF

WASHINGTON The Archdiocese of Washington has received calls and emails about fraudulent emails being received by people from a spam account using Archbishop Gregory’s or other priests’ names. Please note that the Archbishop will not communicate a need for assistance in this way. At this point, we are unable to stop these emails as these fraudulent email accounts are outside of the ADW domain. Please be diligent in not responding to suspicious emails. Additionally, please keep IT security in your minds. Pay special attention to suspicious emails. The Archdiocese is seeing an increase in spam and scams. The US Attorney General is warning us about these coronavirus scams: individuals and businesses selling fake cures for COVID-19 online and engaging in other forms of fraud; phishing emails from entities posing as the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other health organizations; malicious websites and apps that appear to share Coronavirus related information to gain the lock access to you devices until payment is received; seeking donations fraudulently for illegitimate or non-existent charitable organizations; medical providers obtaining patient information for COVID-19 testing and then using that information to fraudulently bill for other test and procedures.

An Act of Spiritual Communion

by St. Alphonsus Liguori

My Jesus, I believe that You are present

in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to

receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You

sacramentally, come at least spiritually

into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there

and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.
