The covid-19 has elicited every possible emoon that a small business owner like me could have. If you happen to be a friend of mine on face book you know Ive broken my rule of being apolical in my posts. Ive always worried that we might offend someone because of our personal core beliefs and that we needed to be sym- pathec and empathec to anyone that is or could be a potenal customer. Frankly, I dont remember a more stressful me and with me on my hands Ive certainly quesoned the polics involved in the handling of this crisis. Lets start with whats essenal and not essenal. Theres certainly lots of debate regarding that, but what I do know is this. Ive seen real tears of despair from the owners of the businesses on either side of us. One young lady saying to me, I never ever imagined I would have to stand in a food line to get free groceries.Aſter that episode I sat in my living room lis- tening to the numbers of people sick and dying. My emoons that day ran from one side of the pendulum to the other. One mo- ment I was angry because our SCUBA shop was mandated to close, thinking its nonsense, to the next moment being angry at my- self because I was selfish and self-serving while people are sick and dying. I have come to this conclusion about myself. I have always let my business interests supersede some principles that I hold dear to me. That wont be the case any longer, my principles will always come first. But that wont be hard to do because of the nature of what SCUBA does. It brings us ALL together no maer our polics, our religion, or our economic status. How does it do it? Just like this: Why I love scuba diving. The moment I took my first breath underwater, I knew my whole life had changed and the more I dive, the more I seem to love scuba diving. I love the ancipaon at the beginning of every dive. Every me I drop below the surface of the water, the only thing I know for sure that is awaing me is adventure. Every dive is different – EVERY DIVE. You could be diving the same spot, on the same dive site, 500 mes and each one would be different. There could be different animals present, or the same animals exhibing different behaviors. The currents can change creang a mild driſt or a ripping ride. The light breaking the waves on the surface can turn yesterdays drab looking swim over a patch of reef into todays stunning kaleidoscope of colors. I love the silence. At no me in my life can I recall geng to spend a totally silent and undisturbed hour with only my own breathing breaking the silence. No cell phones, no TV, no traffic noise, no one talking to you (or at you), and none of the endless cacophony of sounds that makes up our daily roune. Diving is one of the most peaceful and spiritual acvies I have ever done, but it is also one of the most excing. I love looking into the eyes of a sea turtle and seeing them look back at you. I love stalking the reef or the sand looking for creatures so bizarre they would seem to be aliens from another planet taking their vacaon under our seas. I love seeing a sunken shipwreck, a giant Manta Ray, a microscopic pygmy seahorse, or a pod of dolphins racing by as I smile in disbelief. I love sharing it with others. I love sharing a beer at the pool bar with new and seasoned divers discussing all we saw that day and all we hope to see in the dives to come. One of the best things about diving is sharing it with other divers. I feel so privileged to be a diver and to share that world with all of you. God willing, with much hope that financial help isnt further delayed, we will be back to doing what we love. I cant guess when that will be or what that will look like. BUT IT WILL BE WORTH IT!
