Minister unveils Bahrain’s first Solar Home28 Mar 2018
Electricity and Water Affairs Minister Dr. AbdulhussainMirza yesterday unveiled the first ever 'solar home' inBahrain, which is connected to the governmentalelectricity network through a Net Metering system.
The 'solar home' belongs to Hussein Sanad of AlMussala area in Jidhafs and it was unveiled in thepresence of officials of the Ministry of Oil, the Ministryof Housing, Tatweer Petroleum, the Electricity andWater Authority (EWA), the Sustainable Energy Unitand the project contractor.
This is part of the BD3,500 project, which has beencompleted by installing 24 solar panels, producing 7.8kW of electricity. This translates to a total capacity of12,500 units per year and is a third of the annualconsumption by the household.
The minister said this and other renewable energyprojects had been implemented as part of thedirectives of His Majesty the King, His Royal Highnessthe Prime Minister and His Royal Highness the CrownPrince, the Deputy Supreme Commander and FirstDeputy Prime Minister.
H E The Minister ( Dr Hussain Mirza) receive the first owner of BIPV house in Bahrain ( Hussain Hassan

The University of Bahrain had installed probably the largest on-ground smart polycrystalline PV array - in a university campus – in Nov 2013 , consisting of 2,160 PV panels and distributed in 8 rows and having total area 3,521m2,having a total peak Power of 518.4 kWp , sponsored by Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco) as part of its 5MW solar PV project.

The concern of Dust had Gone!?On the 2nd of April 2015 a heavy sand storm hit Bahrain . PV panels were covered by 2 mm of Dust. Surprisingly, the solar electricity from UoB panels was not zero in this day but 25%
of the normal expected yield ( daily of 2,000 kWh for installation of about 518 kW).
![Page 14: 21-22 April 2018 Why Solar Electricity Utility is Boosting ...wesii.uob.edu.bh/images/Presentations/WhySolarElectricityUtilityisBoostinginBahrain.pdfFirst paper Published by Alnaser](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022041511/5e283ac5d3b32850362082bc/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
On the 28th of Nov 2014 there was a heavy rain inBahrain . PV panels were cleaned naturally – saving lot of water and man power. The solar electricity from UoB panels was
about close what was slightly more than the expected by 10% ! E= 2,200 kWh for installation of about 518 kW).
![Page 15: 21-22 April 2018 Why Solar Electricity Utility is Boosting ...wesii.uob.edu.bh/images/Presentations/WhySolarElectricityUtilityisBoostinginBahrain.pdfFirst paper Published by Alnaser](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022041511/5e283ac5d3b32850362082bc/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
We have now more experimental data and outcomes. The performance of the whole Solar Field ( 518.4 kW) ground
installation at University of Bahrain
Note 1 : The high energy readings are due to bulk posting of energy after restoration of
communication system and due to upgrading of IntelliView software system. We are investigating
the abnormal readings.
Note that each house consumes per month 5,000 kWh of electricity .
This means annualy consuming 60,000 kWh. This UoB Solar Station
can provide power for about 12 houses.

Environmental Issues:•Daily/person water consumption in 2012 was 33L,i.e. 10,000L / year.
•Daily per person electricity consumption in 2012 was 101 kWh, i.e. 3
tons of CO2 per person per year.
•Number of trees = 50,000 absorbing 1,000 tons of CO2 annually.
•Number of conventional lights in the campus 85,150 with total power
of 3 MW equivalent to emission of 10,000 ton of CO2 with annual cost
of BD 175,000 ( USD 700,000).

The Available Roof Area 20,205 m2 for Installing PV at University of Bahrain is about 70% (14144 m2). This enable UoB to install about 2.1 MW of Solar electricity producing about
4GWh annually ,i.e reducing CO2 emission of 4ooo tones . Saving about BD 96,000 .

Low Electricity Tariff in Bahrain and GCC Countries and High Cost of Solar Watt in 1990’s make it impossible to widely use solar power technology. Now, things had reversed. In Dubai, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia the solar kWh cost 20 fils while the conventional is 25 fils!
