PARISH LIFE

A Consistent Ethic of Life "A wide spectrum of issues touches on the protection of human life and the promotion of human dignity. As Pope John Paul II has reminded us: "Where life is involved, the service of charity must be profoundly con-

sistent. It cannot tolerate bias and discrimination, for human life is sacred and inviolable at every stage and in every situation; it is an indivisible good" (The Gos-pel of Life, no. 87).

"Among important issues involving the dignity of hu-man life with which the Church is concerned, abortion necessarily plays a central role. Abortion, the direct killing of an innocent human being, is always gravely immoral (The Gospel of Life, no. 57); its victims are the most vulnerable and defenseless members of the hu-man family. It is imperative that those who are called to serve the least among us give urgent attention and priority to this issue of justice” (2001: US Bishops’ Pas-toral Plan for Pro-life Activities: A Campaign in Sup-port of Life).

We pray to the Lord for those who govern us, that they may have the heart and mind of a good shepherd, and keep the protection of human life as their first priority. ~ Priests for Life

PARISH LIFE

Saint James Catholic Church Celebrates 170th Anniversary! 2021 marks 170 years that Saint James Catholic Church

has been serving the Catholic community in Hardin County. This milestone does not go without notice as our parish has grown significantly throughout its decades of service. One constant has been the location of the parish – it has been a prominent fixture along Dixie Avenue since 1851. There is a historical timeline of our parish website (stjames-etown.org) under “about us” if you are interested in learning more. We plan to celebrate this momentous occasion throughout the remainder of the year. The picnic committee will be providing a variety of 170th Anniversary souvenir items between July and December and we will plan to celebrate this anniversary appropriately when our parish comes together for the Community Picnic on Saturday, August 28.

SAINT JAMES CATHOLIC SCHOOL

Fr. Loi Pham was born in Huong Son, a rural town in Vietnam to farmers who are devout Catho-lics. He is the fifth of six children. As a child growing up in Vietnam’s North Central Coast, Father Loi Dinh Pham was drawn to the priests’ colorful vestments but thought the priesthood was out of reach. “The preacher always wore something very colorful and beautiful, but I had no idea of be-coming a priest,” said Fr. Pham in a recent interview. “I never had that thought. Priests were very holy, noble, extraordinary, out of my reach.”

In 2013 Fr. Loi entered St. Francis Xavier Seminary in Vinh, Vietnam, and three years later he came to the United States to continue his formation for the priesthood. He graduated May 8 from St. Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology in St. Meinrad, Ind., with a master’s degree in theolo-

gy. Fr. Loi was ordained to the priesthood by Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz on May 29th.

“I feel grateful, first to God and to all the people — my superiors, the bishops and vocation directors here and in Vietnam and all the people who supported me. I’m excited to graduate and move on and serve God and his peo-ple,”. “In the midst of those wonderful feelings, I’m nervous. Being a priest and an associate pastor is a big deal,”

Fr. Loi is excited to be the new associate pastor of Saint James Church. “I’d love to see myself having the smell of sheep while serving the people … being there whenever they need me as a representative of Christ and the church,” said Fr. Loi. “My initial motivation is to serve people with love and joy and try to bring good things to the people of God.” Fr. Loi said he is especially looking forward to ministering to the “poor, disabled, sick and forgot-ten.” “They will be the main focus of my priesthood. We’re blessed when we have everything. Then we have peo-ple who are lacking. It’s my duty and responsibility to serve them as a requirement of charity,” said Fr. Loi.

Saint James Parish Welcomes our new Business Manager

Hello, my name is Scott Johnson. I am a native of Hardin County, originally from the Howevalley /Cecilia area.

My family owned and operated Johnson’s TV for over 35 years. This business taught me the val-ue of hard work and being a val-ued member of the community.

I am a graduate of Central Hardin High School. After high school, I attended and graduated from Saint Cath-arine College with a degree in Business Management/Administration/Finance.

My wife Kristi is originally from Larue County and we have two children; Connor (2 years old ) and Josselyn (2 months old).

I am a deacon at Glendale Christian Church serving on several committees and groups within the church. I am an avid golfer at Elizabethtown Country Club and odds are that if the weather is nice, you will find me there.

My wife and I enjoy spending time with our two kids who keep us very busy as you can imagine. I look forward to serving as your Business Manager and getting to know several of you personally as my career continues.

Saint James Parish Welcomes our new Associate Director of Faith Formation

Hi, my name is Olivia Dvorjak and I am the new Associate Director of Faith Formation!

I am far from a stranger to the parish or school, as I have been a member of Saint James since 1992 when my family moved to Elizabethtown. I attended Saint James Cath-olic School Kindergarten-8th grade, John Hardin High School, and then the Franciscan University of Steubenville for my undergrad bachelor's degree and the University of the Cumberlands for my master's degree.

I was a middle school teacher at Saint James School for the last seven years and am excited to continue to minister to the members of our parish in a new and profound way.

In my new role, I will be directing the youth ministry of our parish (middle school and high school ages), the young adult ministry, and guiding those in the marriage and baptismal processes.

Saint Gianna says, "Whatever God Wants" and I am profoundly humbled to be following in God's will for me at this point in my life.

Stewardship Reflection - Jeff Lanz - Like many of you, my road to learning the value of Stewardship to the Church, and more importantly to myself, had a number of twists and turns.

I was raised going to CCD and Church every Sunday while growing up…unless we were really sick, we went! My Grandmother, Mary Frances Lanz (from whom I learned a lot about faith) has shared that I used to give out “Communion” with Nabisco Vanilla Wafers – I have no real memory of this, but can believe the stories. Ironically, I was never an Altar Server, having some fear of the Reverend John T. Spalding – whom I later got to know and respect.

Following many years of the “what ifs” thinking about the Priesthood, high school and col-lege years, initial work years in the library world, I took the plunge; with the encourage-ment of Fr. Bill Fichteman, I followed transitional Deacon Jeff Nicolas back to St. Meinrad after his summer at St. James to pursue the vocation. I have told people that “I got the call, but it was a wrong num-ber”; I don’t think I gave God or myself enough credit. Possibly a timing issue, more likely that was not the journey I was meant to go on…either way, that door closed, and I honestly did not know when another would open.

G. K. Chesterton said, “Coincidences are spiritual puns”; in other words, what we might think of as being pure coinci-dences are actually plans that the Lord had in mind for us. Proverbs 16:9 says, “In his mind a man plans his course, but the Lord directs his steps”. Fr. Chuck Walker asked Frank Bryan to chair the Parish Council, but he had to find a replacement for Worship chair first; Frank knew I desired to be active in the Church again – the 1st door opened. Af-ter many years of scheduling the Altar Servers, Elaine Pike stepped down from that Ministry (to later take on anoth-er one ) – so the “never Served” took on that sub-Committee – the 2nd door opened. Fr. Martin Linebach sought additional assistance around the Sanctuary and asked me to accept the role of an Acolyte – door #3.

Stewardship embodies the grateful response of a Christian disciple who recognizes and receives God’s gifts and shares those gifts in expressing their love of God and his neighbor. We do not all have a great deal of time, recognize our own talent or are overflowing with great treasure – but we do not have to be. What we do have to be is willing to share whatever we can, to show how much we love God and our fellow Christians – we all have something we can offer. I encourage each of you to seek those doors – or to just be willing to try and open them when they are in front of you.

THIS WEEKEND’S READINGS The Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Jeremiah 23:1-6 Second Reading: Ephesians 2:13-18 Gospel: Mark 6:30-34

“The apostles gathered together with Jesus and re-ported all they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” People were coming and going in great numbers, and they had no opportunity even to eat.” ~ Mark 6:30-31

Stewardship does not mean you should pack your life full of more and more activities until there is no time left. Christ tells us to take a break once in awhile. Part of stewardship of time is time to rest.

NEXT WEEKEND’S READINGS The Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: 2 Kings 4:42-44 Second Reading: Ephesians 4:1-6 Gospel: John 6:1-15
