SCHOOL HAPPENINGS Tuesday 22 September Yr 7/8 Oztag Gala Day, Wyong Thursday 24 September Visual Arts GATS Mural Science Block Wednesday 30 September GATS Mosaic Mural Workshop Friday 2 October Year 12 Graduation

I know all in our school commu-nity will join with me to extend best wishes and congratulations to Year 12 as they graduate from secondary schooling and ready themselves for HSC exams. The students of Year 12, 2009 have been positive and enthusi-astic school citizens. We know they will make a wealth of nota-ble and varied contributions to the communities they join after school as they launch them-selves into the next exciting stage of their journey through life. The school will hold two func-tions to mark the graduation of Year 12, 2009. However stu-dents should guard against los-ing sight of the hard work, effort and focus that has sustained them throughout the year, and instead become preoccupied with ‘celebrating’ their ‘freedom’. A Graduation Assembly for students and their families will be held on Friday 2nd October at 10.00 am to celebrate the completion of senior class work. This however, does not herald a break from the comprehensive, well-planned study program which students know will need to continue throughout the HSC ex-ams which commence on Tuesday October 20.

The conclusion of HSC studies at Erina High School is marked by a Formal Farewell evening function held at the end of HSC examinations on No-vember 26th. In the final week of school and throughout the Spring break as Year 12 ready them-selves for their examinations I wish to restate the expectations I have of them. This information has already been provided to students and families: In class on task to “fine tune”

their preparation Maintain contact with teach-

Safe, responsible behaviour towards staff, other students, community & property

Adherence to the school’s Code of Conduct

No “muck-up activities” only planned fund-raisers previously negotiated with the Principal

No entry to the school out-side school hours

Deportment in the wider com-munity which reflects well on the school and its families

Safe celebrating, looking out for themselves and their peers

I would like to wish each stu-dent a productive Spring break, a rewarding HSC performance and a bright, satisfying future!

VISUAL ARTS GATS MURALS IN F BLOCK

We have selected a group of very talented Visual Art students from Year Seven and Year Eight who have created innovative mural designs with science themes. These will soon be seen on the lower 'F' block walls. Mural Panels have been a popular addition to the school environment since they were first seen on the walls in 2005. These panels will continue to use the bright and imaginative colours and images but will take the form of a long panoramic beach scene in which people like Marie Curie, Isaac Newton, Galileo and Einstein are making their ideas known at the beach! The whimsical images designed by our talented students along our local coastline will reflect the notions of these famous scientists. The very attractive images for these murals were created by: Jamie–Lee Bennett, Kirsten Bock, Lara Coffey, Henry Chan, Emily De Vries, Joel Fletcher, Eliza Forkin, Matthew Grennan, Caitlin Murray, Danielle Parkes, Kimberlee Pierce, Zara Pilarski, Madeline Sheppard and Tara Uhle from Year Seven as well as Brianna Anthony, Daniel Gaha, Telisha Kelso and Hannah Langthorne from Year Eight. Due to the success of our murals the PD.H.PE. faculty has also requested designs for murals to depict physical activities which will be seen as images on the walls of the canteen. We intend to start on these in term four.

Due to an administrative error, the latest visit by the Red Cross Blood Bank Donormobile clashed with the Year 12 Trial HSC exams. This meant that potential donors from Year 12 were unavailable. An approach was made to year 10 to take up the challenge and make their first donations. Students are legally allowed to donate from the age of 16. It was expected that 5-10 students from Year 10 would volunteer. When the situation was explained to them, 32 students from Year 10 came forward and volunteered. As they were first-time donors, the nerves were there but they faced the task with enthusiasm and a great deal of maturity. Very positive feedback was received from the staff of the Donormobile. All students who volunteered (including our regular Year 11 donors) are to be congratulated for their efforts and their community spirit. All parents/guardians are asked to encourage their students to donate to this very worthy cause. Sixty successful donations were made on the day– A brilliant effort from our students. JUMP ROPE FOR HEART In the lead up to the Jump Off Day on September 10th, we had the Jump Rope for Heart Demonstration Team visit the school to show the various activities students can do with ropes. A talented group of primary students from Harrington Public School (Camden) thrilled the Year 7s with their performance. They were a very talented team who must work very hard to achieve the skill level they displayed.

The Jump Off Day was most successful with all Year 7s present taking part in the rope activities on the basketball courts. They were able to raise $802.90 which has been sent to the Heart Foundation. Congratulations—well done!

HOLGATE PS SAYS THANKYOU Holgate Public School community would like to pass on a 'huge' thankyou to the students and staff from Erina HS who have helped so much with our School Musical Extravaganza that was held at EHS school hall last Wednesday evening.

Our boys dance group thrived on the creative direction provided by Mrs Samara Scully and the four fantastic dance students. The boys have never performed in public before. They absolutely 'wowed' the audience.

We also had the privilege of having 4 exceptionally talented students from EHS perform live music on the evening. Three of the students, Jake Brennan, Tom Beasley and Jamie Mullarkey are ex-Holgate students who along with another student Matt Lynch, performed three songs to the amazement of the 500 members of the audience. Another student, Thim Jeppeson assisted with sound and lighting during rehearsal and on the performance night. Any technical problems we had were easily resolved by Thim who was pleasure to work with.

Earlier this year, twelve of our students also worked with EHS art teacher Karen Scott to develop two murals. One is almost completed and will placed in our school hall later this year. Thanks Mrs Scott.

Our small school has strong ties with Erina High School. It is rewarding to see many of our ex-students, thriving in a great public high school that provides opportunities for life skills and personal opportunities that help them grow into confident young adults.

Mike Murphy, Principal Holgate PS

Year 12 Drama The Yr 12 Drama “Parent Night” was held on Friday the 28th of August and was a great opportunity to show both the group and individual pieces to a mature audience. The audience was wonderful as they responded to the humorous as well as the serious elements in each performance. A high level of

theatricality was realised by the performers and a great night was had by all.

The HSC practical performance drama marking occured on Monday the 31st of August. The day ran very smoothly even though it was a very long day. A big thank-you to the audience who stayed until

5:00, remaining fresh and excited about each performance.

Congratulations to Year 12 drama students for a first rate effort all around!!

In Term 1 all Year 7 and 8 students were invited to participate in a fun art competition that involved them drawing a humorous caricature of their favourite teacher. There wasn’t a huge response to the competition, which will hopefully grow more popular next year when I conduct it again. The winners of this year’s competition were:

1st Place – Caitlyn Paris of Year 7 who won a Creta Colour Student set of Drawing Pencils, an A4 30 Leaf B&W Visual Arts Diary and a Creta Colour Fine Art Pastel Pencil Set valued at over $40

2nd Place – Jaimi-Lee Bennett of Year 7 who won a Richeson Professional Watercolour Pad and a Faber Creative Studio “Art Grip” Aquarelle Pencil Set

valued at $30

3rd Place – Brandon Lovegrove of Year 8 who won a Fabriano “Ingres” Ivory Pastel Pad and a Set of 24 Maria’s Soft Round Pastel Set valued at $20

Congratulations go to those students who were enthusiastic and motivated enough to enter and to the deserving winners.

Mosaic Mural Ceramic Workshop

On Wednesday the 30th September a group of 30 talented year 7 & 8 students will participate in another special ceramics workshop centred on creating a series of mosaic panelled boards that will be mounted on the northern side of A-Block facing the oval. The theme for the 4 panels will be The Four Natural Elements (Fire, Water, Wind and Air) chosen to echo the natural setting in which the school was built and to reflect the tree area adjacent to the building where the panels will be mounted.

During the workshop the students will work with Mrs K. Scott, who specialises in Ceramics and is a member of the Art Faculty at EHS. Prior to the workshop students will elect which panel they would like to work on in a team of 4 and submit their design for the panel. The groups will consult with Mrs Scott to determine the final designs before beginning the tile making process.

Students will hand-form each tile piece until the entire panel is covered. Extra pieces will be made so that they can “spill” off the panels onto the brick wall and eventually lead into the garden below, in which will be placed hand-made ceramic sculptures that echo the same theme as the panels.

After the pieces have been fired they will be glazed and then adhered to the panels, grouted, sealed and then permanently mounted. The finished mosaic panels will then be installed in place at a later date for all students, staff and visitors to enjoy. Project progress will be recorded in photographs for later newsletters.

Mrs K. Scott. Visual Arts.

So many times

I’ve moved

So little times

I’m trusted,

But one has hope in me

And each time we come to meet

He’d assisted me with glee

No poem

No speech

Could say enough

I’ve told him things I’d rarely tell myself

And just through listening has been a great help

My life is as difficult as try-ing to get a rock to talk

It’s just impossible

And many, many people

Chant their belief

But there’s one man

That’s never shown me grief

Only on a Thursday

During second period

I’d have the honour

Of his presence

The advice he shared

Is as rich as gold

Because my smile

Can never sold

I just thank you for this

wonderful experience.

Our school has enjoyed a busy and rewarding term with some real highlights to celebrate! There have been exceptional outcomes at individual, team and school levels which have earned accolades in academic competitions, sport, debating, drama, music, and community service. Congratulations to students for their efforts and achievements and thanks to parents and teachers for the quality guidance and support which produced personal best performances.

In particular our graduating year 12 students deserve recognition for the out-standing array of HSC major projects and performances which have been pre-sented to examiners over the past weeks. The talent and expertise of our most sen-ior students and their teacher- coaches has been remarkable.

I would like to wish all members of our school community a very relaxing and re-freshing Spring break. I look forward to greeting students and staff enthusiastic to meet the challenges of term 4 when school resumes for both teachers and students on Monday October 19th. Marj Kong. Principal

CONCLUDING A VERY PRODUCTIVE TERM

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE CELEBRATIONS Students from Years 7-12 were honoured for their outstanding academic achieve-ments at our annual Excellence Assembly. One hundred and twenty students were awarded ‘Scholarship Awards’ for excellence in one course of study and ‘Principal’s Awards’ were presented to forty students who excelled in two or more courses. The names of all awardees are already framed and on display in our administration building. The assembly was ably managed by student leaders Rebecca Street, Dylan Par-berry, Sarah Kidd, Danielle Wilkes, Aman Kaur and Mark Nolasco with entertaining performances by Courtney Dagasso, Dylan Moore, Dyaln Parberry and Bryce Har-lum. The event was coordinated by Year 11 Business Services students with the help of Mrs Campbell and hospitality was provided by junior hospitality students un-der the guidance of Mrs O’Mahony. Our sound and lighting team with the assis-tance of Mr Read also did a great job on the day.

Tournament of Minds Team- 2009

Over the course of the year, through surveys from teachers and workshops, a group of clever students from years seven, eight and nine were selected to form the team to represent our

school in the national “Tournament of Minds” competition.

Students compete in one of the problem solving areas: Mathematics & Engineering, Language & Literature, Applied Technology or the Social Sciences. Our students performed particularly well this year in the competition while responding in a very quirky and charming presentation to a

challenge which related to Language and Literature.

Congratulations to Jaimi–Lee Bennett, Henry Chan, Casey Smith (Year 7), Telisha Kelso and Daniel Gaha (8) and Cassandra Lucock and Makayla Kirkman (9) who performed their challenge on Saturday the 29th August 2009 at UTS Kuring-gai Campus in Sydney and were complimented on their innovative costume design and their teamwork by the judges after the performance. The team was ably supported by Belinda Allen, Kirsten Bock, Dylan Crawford, Olivia Lippl, Kimberlee

Pearce and Zara Pilarski during school workshop sessions. We are very proud of you all!

This was essentially a brand new group of students who have not worked together on Tournament of Minds before, so we can expect great things for 2010! Previously our 2007 tournament team received an ‘Honours’ award for their response using animation, and our

2005 team received a ‘Special Award’ for their spirited performance.

I’m sure you are as proud as I am of our students and their efforts. They are to be congratulated!

A caring community commited to excellence in education

Ceramic Totem Pole Workshop On Tuesday 25th August, 31 x Year 7 & 8 students participated in a Visual Arts GATS workshop to create a series of ceramic “Totem Poles” that will be installed in garden areas within the school. Each student was asked to design and make an individual piece for a totem pole that will eventually stand approximately 1.3m high.

On the day, students worked in small groups in an art room under the supervision of Mrs K. Scott and made their own unique, individual totemic sculptural piece. The student’s designs covered a wide variety of themes such as family, pets, Australian flora and fauna, traditional North American designs, animal totems, hobbies and sporting interests.

The workshop was a fun, educational and productive day, with students being given the opportunity to work in a studio environment under the guidance of a specialist Ceramics teacher. This was an excellent opportunity for talented students to be extended in their skills development and to be part of a unique project within the school.

The totem poles are currently being kiln-fired and then the students will be asked back to glaze them. Upon completion they will be installed in the school gardens for all visitors, staff and students to enjoy. Mrs K. Scott GATS Coordinator (Art Faculty)
