Readings for next Sunday, May 21, 2017

Acts of the Apostles 8:5-8, 14-17 1 Peter 3:15-18 John 14:15-21

From the Pastor’s Desk Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

A few weeks ago, I mentioned the upcoming canonization of Francisco and Jacinta Marto, siblings from Fatima, Portugal, who along with their cousin, Lucia Santos, witnessed an apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known today as Our Lady of Fatima. This weekend we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first apparition. On May 13, 1917 Our Lady appeared to these three children and encouraged the world to offer prayers and sacrifices on behalf of sinners. It’s a message for the entire world and for us.

The story began in 1916, when the Angel of God first appeared to the three children, demonstrating to them the proper way to pray and receive Holy Communion, that is, with attention and reverence. It was understood that all should pray and receive the Eucharist similarly, as we have lost much of our attentiveness and reverence required for a fruitful prayer life. During the subsequent period between 1917 and 1920, Our Lady appeared to the children six times (she also appeared a seventh time, but only to Lucia). Each time her message was consistent and not complicated: Mary will always point us to Jesus. She stressed the importance of praying the Rosary every day and making daily sacrifices to God, in reparation for the sins committed against Him. We can overcome much through these simple practices because, as Our Lady revealed, the root cause of all the problems in our world is sin, and thus the logical solution is to stop sinning and to pray.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if every person were to heed Our Lady’s message by abandoning sin and turning back to God in prayer and right living? Violence and hatred would cease. Mutual love, service and respect would increase. This is what the Virgin Mary wants for each of us, to experience the fullness of life in Christ. And she seeks to point us in that direction, not just by encouraging us to the practice of prayer and repentance, but by directing us to enter into the very Heart of Jesus. This 100th anniversary of Fatima is a way to honor what Our Lady does for us by constantly pointing us to Jesus. She cares for us, just as a loving mother.

In addition to this 100th anniversary, we honor our earthly mothers on this Mother’s Day weekend. Just like Mary, our mothers have cared for us and seek only our good. They desire that we not fall into those habits that lead us to unhappiness, but rather that we find the right path and stick to it. When our mothers presented us to the Church at our baptism, they promised to show us the way to Jesus. When we went through trials in life, they were there to show us the love of Jesus through their motherly care. When we had success in life, they were there cheering us on. They continue to reveal to us the Heart of Jesus through their love and support. Let us show our appreciation and our love for them in a special way this weekend. To all our mothers, adoptive mothers, stepmothers, and grandmothers; to all first-time mothers and expectant mothers; to all mothers who have lost a child and to those who desperately want a child; to all those who show us a mother’s heart in any way, HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! May God bless you abundantly this day and always!

God bless, Fr. Chris Shofner [email protected]

Please note that Fr. Adams will be out of the office May 15-19 as he travels to visit family. See today’s bulletin for changes to our daily Mass schedule for the week. Please pray for Father’s safe travels and that he returns refreshed.

Dead Theologians Society - We will be meeting TODAY, Sunday, May 14 in Cleveland from 6-9PM.

All youth from eighth grade through senior in high school are most welcome. The evening includes game time, teaching on a saint that is related to a teen's life, and a meal. We close with night prayer and benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

All are invited to be with Jesus exposed in the Eucharist to pray for the youth. Those graces are the key to reach the teens and grow the faith.

The parish will have a special Mass for those who desire to receive the Anointing of the Sick during Mass. This Mass will take place on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at 5:00 PM at St. Mary’s. The Sacrament of Anointing is

appropriate for those whose health is impaired by sickness or advanced age. Father Chris will Lay Hands on the person to be Anointed. This is a silent prayer, an action, an invoking the Holy Spirit to heal in ways that only God knows the sick person needs healing, body, mind, and spirit.

Senior Choir is invited to sing at this Mass.

A light meal will be served in the Social Hall following the Mass. Please feel free to join us.
