Chairman’s Pen
My dear fellow exporters,
EEPC India is extremely worried about the present global economic order from theperspective of engineering exporters, especially those who belong to the small andmedium scale sector. While the Union Commerce and Industry Ministry has triedits best to lend a helping hand, I do believe much more needs to be done. This isbecause India’s Balance of Trade is indeed rather precarious and the CurrentAccount Deficit may end the year at 3% of GDP. The concern is that so far CapitalAccount Surpluses have offset the deficit on the current account but it is a moot pointwhether this is sustainable if the developed world does not recover sufficiently in theshort to medium term. It is for this reason that the RBI is unwilling to intervene inthe foreign exchange market fearing sharp capital outflows if the global situationworsens further.
I would, therefore, urge the Hon’ble Finance Minister that while ensuring revenueenhancing measures like drawing up a negative list for service tax, the budget forthe Union Commerce & Industry Ministry should also be enhanced with a directionthat the export promotion schemes like FMS, FPS and the MLFPS scheme outlaysbe enhanced by the Department of Commerce.
Yours sincerely,
(AMAN CHADHA)
