STANDERTON – The congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church of Standerton and Lekwa Local Municipality are at loggerheads regarding the booking of the Standerton Town Hall. Each year, the Church books the Hall for their annual bazaar held on the last weekend of May. According to their minister, Reverend Riaan Botha, the congregation has booked, reserved and paid for the venue months ago. Last week Tuesday, he was summoned to the Municipality to discuss the booking of the Hall.

He was told by Mr Sipho Mkhwanazi that the Mayor will be using the hall on Friday, 29 May, for her budget speech. Mkhwanazi said that: “We do not want to resort to force, but the Mayor is going to deliver her speech.” According to Reverend Botha, this did not go down very well knowing that the congregation relies on this annual event to help them secure some money. He said that they make use of the Town Hall specifically because of its location, being in the middle of town.

The fact that the hall was booked and the fact that they have already secured deals with people to supply meat and other fresh produce which was planned for well in advance, could lead to serious financial losses to the congregation. Reverend Botha said that it is not only rude from the Office of the Mayor, but very inconsiderate. The Mayor used other days of the week before to give her budget speech to a select few and the congregation feels that she could have done the same.

Cllr Rosier de Ville said that it shows the lack of respect and arrogance from the Office of the Mayor towards honouring an agreement and that the Mayor is misusing her status and authority with disregard to others. He said that he supports any just cause for democracy where every person and the state respect the rights of others without abuse and that the Mayor should not bitter relations with the community. Cllr De Ville said that the comment of Mr Mkhwanazi stating that they do not want to resort to force is irresponsible and unprofessional.

It’s just inconsiderate...

SECUNDA - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Mpumalanga led a march on 16 May to Govan Mbeki municipal offices, in Secunda against the municipality’s failure to prevent Eskom from cutting power to the municipal-ity.

Led by DA provincial leader James Ma-sango, the DA marched to the municipal of-fices in Secunda to hand over a memorandum to the Municipal Manager Mmela Mahlangu, demanding that the MM and Mayor meet ur-gently with Eskom to set a robust repayment plan, to keep the lights on.

This comes after Eskom announced that it will cut bulk electricity to 20 municipalities

as a result of the huge municipal debts. This will be grossly unfair to all the people of Govan Mbeki municipality who have paid their accounts and are up to date with payments.

To date we have not heard of any arrangements made by this municipality to avoid bulk electricity cuts.

Eskom did announce that 10 municipalities have made arrangements to pay their outstanding accounts, and Govan Mbeki is not one of them. In the memorandum, the DA demanded that (1) the Municipal Manager and Mayor meet urgently with Eskom to set a robust repayment plan, to keep the lights

on, and (2) the Mayor launch an investigation into the financial affairs of the municipality.

Leadership must prevail and action should be taken immediately to prevent this.

We cannot afford to drag the economy of this municipality and that of the Province down and hamper the lives of our people even further due to the municipality’s incompetence.

A motion was tabled by DA councillor NC van Huyssteen at a council meeting recently requesting the municipality to engage Eskom as a matter of urgency.

The DA has given the municipality 14 days to respond to our demands. JD

STANDERTON -The community is fu-ming with anger to see adverts all over the town containing indecent material and promoting unsafe abortions. Most of the people called on Lekwa Municipality to act against the adverts, calling it immoral and contrasting the nature of a God-fearing society.

Mr Reggie Khumalo, of Sakhile, asked how they must explain these procedures to their grandchildren. Another concerned resident, Ms Nomsa Gumede, says that she is concerned about the society they are living in which exposes children to these kind of indecent unhealthy and danger-ous procedures. She explained that she

understands that we are living in a modern world where we must educate our kids about sex and the consequences thereof , but this must be done at home in a dignified manner, bearing in mind that in our black culture parents did not discuss any sexual matters with children.

A local church leader condemned the adverts and called on police to track down those responsible for advertising immoral activities. Many have told Cosmos News that if the law does not protect their chil-dren from this evil practice, they will track down the so called traditional healers ope-rating in hideout locations in town. STANDERTON - Municipal workers of Lekwa Local Municipality are fed-up with the way things are going at the Municipality. They stated that they are sick and tired of carrying the blame for the dismal state in which the municipality is finding itself. Workers say that they have had enough of taking the blame for the bad reputation in which the Lekwa Local Municipality has with its residents. The workers threatened to go on a full strike should their concerns be ignored. A memorandum expressing their concerns and highlighting their grievances was delivered to the Office of the Speaker. It is quoted directly and reads as follows:

• We demand safe vehicles.• We don’t want to see any of the employees sitting at the back of the bakkie we demand

safe transportation.• We demand quality PPE and working equipments• We want firearms and protective clothing (bullet proof for traffic officers) as soon as

possible.• We demand the institution to take very serious the issue of health and safety for

workers.• We want the employer to fast-track the grading issue for all the employees of this

municipality and the job evaluation.• We want the employer to pay the traffic fines received by employees while they were

on duty driving the un safety un roadworthy vehicles.• We want all the employees that are acting in budgeted positions to be appointed.• And all the contract workers that are working in this municipality be appointed

permanently.• As the stakeholder of this municipality we also want to know about the bill of

Eskom and and what action or commitments made by the municipality to address the challenge.

• We want Mr Simba as the Acting H.O.D. of Technical department because he has already failed dismal to manage and performed his duties that department.

• The acting CFO Duba we also want him to step down because we don’t see what he is doing except the contractors from Vrede that him and Linda Tshabalala they are bringing to come and tender in this municipality.

• Mr Kgotso Duba is dismally failing the municipality, he is more active to pay fruitless expenditures and failed to advised accordingly, we also notice the appointment of contractors form Vrede.

• The Linda Tshabalala since he was employed by this municipality as the Municipal Manager, no development and progress made for Lekwa nothing good he has done

only taking his municipality to the grave. We want him (Municipal Manager) his resignation. We further request him to be investigated on the appointment and payment of fruitless expenditure for service providers;

• We demand explanation as to why the municipality is struggling financially, we also demand special investigation on the financial affairs of the municipality.

• The time he was deployed here taught he knew this municipality and frustration of this community he will improve life of this workers and the and tire community but the thing he is best on saying Nice thing but falling to implement and deliver on what he is saying living this municipality it will be a blessing but the strategy to drive this municipality to become beter its zero.

• He said this municipality has no money, and why he is still in the services of the municipality, why can’t we go to administration, and we also want to know if this municipality has obtained a clean audit, in which sense? By considering the challenges we are in now.

• He keep on saying the municipality is spending too much on paying overtime BUT there’s no strategy to minimize and control overtime, where are the resources? Till when various departments sharing equipments? (ie one vehicle shared by more than one dept.)

• We demand to know as workers that you are going to outsource the electrical department?as these contractors of Municipal Manager and his friends (Mr Mafika) are doing the job that should be done by out electrician.

• The H.O.D. Radebe don’t have a strategic plan for the department which is aligning with the vision and objectives. She keeps on promoting segregation, favoritism into between the staff of the unit, she is only good on concentrating in frustrating and confusing officials, the department too big for here the only is beter she hand-over her resignation letter as soon as possible before she cause more damage.

• The license department is been over a year operating without telephone lines and proper equipment that supposed to be in that department but she has done nothing the only thing she best on dividing officials and put the (spy) to spy on here is beter she go back in department where she is best on.

• The library department what a shame no one is taking care of it, even H.O.D. of the department she doesn’t know whether the unit is existing.

• The fire department and park and guiding the H.O.D. is falling to help getting working tools and personnel resigning soon it will help this municipality.

• And we also want to know what is the role played by (Jabulane Mtsweni) the HR manager for municipality.

Hy was reeds oorlede.

STANDERTON - A local busi-nessman is lucky to be alive to recount his story. This follows a business robbery that took place at his shop in Walter Sisulu Drive on Tuesday night. According to the police, the man was alone at his store after the rest of the staff had knocked off.

When the electricity went off due to load shedding he lit a candle. It is reported that two unknown men walked into the shop at 22:00 and bought some loose cigarettes and peacefully walked out. About ten minutes later another pair walked in and were also looking for ciga-rettes, but they suddenly pulled out knives and demanded money from the store owner. The first two men came back and joined in. While the store owner was still try-ing to come to terms of what was

happening, one suspect allegedly stabbed him with a knife in the chest. They stole three cellphones, airtime vouchers and an undis-closed amount of cash. They fled the scene in the store owner’s car. After the robbery had taken place the man managed to phone the pol ice. Lt Johannes Nhlabathi said that the stabwound was not deep and that the man could have been far worse off. A case of business robbery was opened for investiga-tion. There was no trace of the car and the suspects were still at large at the time of going to print Police are warning business owners to close their shops if load shedding takes place at night. The rest of the community must also lock their doors and rather remain home, as it seems that criminals are taking advantage of the darkness. DM

STANDERTON - Four Unions with about 300 mem-bers, including laid off security guards, marched to Standerton police station on Thursday last week to hand a memorandum that is directed to the Office of the Premier of Mpumalanga, Mr DD Mabuza and Mr Vusi Shongwe, MEC of Public Safety, Security and Liaison.

The memorandum comes in wake of tens of security guards who were left without jobs after a new security services company was appointed to replace Mafoko Se-curity Services from the 1st of April 2015. Many state institutions have been left unguarded because of a mas-sive downscaling within security companies, while en-gagements with the authorities were underway. It has come to light that the top ten security companies were instructed by the Department of Safety, Security and Liaison to scale down on manpower. This led to a com-plete breakdown of negotiations between SATAWU and the employers. In solidarity with the workers, COSATU, SANCO, and the SACP joined forces to add their voices

to the plight of dismissed workers. The memorandum calls on the MEC to reinstate all laid off security guards with immediate effect, demanding proper guarding ser-vices of government property and patients at clinics and hospitals. It further calls on the MEC to consider the safety of patients, which cannot be compromised, at hospital. The memorandum demanded a response with-in seven working days.

It is reported that MEC Shongwe could not attent a ceremony to receive the memorandum due to the un-timely death of his eight-year-old son. March leadership agreed to let Col Sikhakhane from Standerton SAPS cluster Office receive and sign the memorandum on be-half of the MEC. Col Sikhakhane promised that he will make sure the memorandum is delivered safely to the office of the MEC. The march was peaceful and orderly. After the handover marchers walked peacefully to wait-ing buses that took them back to Sakhile. DM

PROVINCIAL - Premier David Mabuza must come clean about the terms of the ‘R10 billion capital investment’ he se-cured for the province on his recent trip to Italy. The R10bn is in fact not an investment but a major loan which will have to be paid back by Mpumalanga’s already struggling economy.

According to reports, the Premier has secured R10 billion in ‘infrastructure investment capital’ for the construction of hospitals and schools in the province. The reports also state that Mabuza has signed an agreement with SACE, an Italian Export Credit Agency.

Premier Mabuza has since said that SACE will partner

with local companies to build the hospitals and schools and government would lease the buildings for a particular period until the money was repaid. SACE will reportedly assist in revamping five hospitals in Mpumalanga and build more schools in Bushbuckridge.

This is nothing more than a massive loan, which could burden Mpumalanga catastrophically. It is concerning that Premier Mabuza had to travel all the way to Italy to secure a loan. Are there no institutions in South Africa that are willing to grant him the same loan while strengthening our country’s economy and creating and maintaining jobs in South Africa?

All loan interest and costs will now leave South Africa to the benefit of a foreign country.

Since coming into office, Mabuza has travelled all over the world seeking to establish relations with countries he has vis-ited, yet the end product of these trips hardly ever materialise. Parliamentary questions to the Premier will be asked to dis-close the terms of the loan with SACE including the interest rate and how long it will take the province to pay back the money. Premier Mabuza will also be asked to disclose how much the trip to Italy cost and how it was funded. JD

Ses dorpe het nie aan die regulasies voldoen nie.· Belfast stel 5200 E.coli per 100 ml water in natuurlike waterbronne vry.· Bethal stel 450 000 E.coli per 100 ml water in natuurlike waterbronne vry.· Dullstroom stel 2000 E.coli per 100 ml water in natuur-like waterbronne vry.· Ermelo stel 590 000 E.coli per 100 ml water in natuur-like waterbronne vry.· Lydenburg stel 73400 E.coli per 100 ml water in natuur-

like waterbronne vry.· Standerton stel 100 000 E.coli per 100 ml water in na-tuurlike waterbronne vry.

Hundreds of thousands litres of water were wasted on Tuesday. The quick-fix can clearly be seen where a furrow was dug to let the water flow directly into a small stream and away from the road. No other signs could be seen that the leak was under repair. Municipal workers were not prepared to speak to the media when con-tacted regarding this issue and the unwilling-ness of the spokesperson to supply information made it impossible to gather more information before going to print.

1. A set of alloy wheels will improve the appearance of your vehicle and in so doing will make your vehicle stand out from the crowd. 2. Alloy wheels will reduce the formally standardweight of a vehicle fitted with standard steel wheels. The benefit of reducedformally standardweight is more precise steering as well as a nominal reduction in fuel consumption. 3. Alloy is an excellent conductor of heat, improving heat dissipation from the brakes, reduc-ing the risk of brake failure under demanding driving conditions. 4. When selling alloy wheels applying the ‘inch up principle’, there is an improvement in the steering response and road holding, especially when cornering. Choosing the correct wheel1. Firstly, the wheel must appeal to the customer. 2. In order for the wheel to offer the benefits expected from it, it must be manufactured to fit properly. There are four aspects that are critical for precise fitment namely: PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter) Offset Centre Bore Diameter PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter)This is the diameter of an imaginary circle drawn through the center of the bolt holes. The PCD of the wheel should match that of the vehicle exactly. PCD. is measured in mm eg 100/4 means the wheel has 4 bolt holes and the diameter of the imaginary circle through the bolt holes is 100mm. A PCD gauge is used to measure the PCD of a wheel accurately. Load CapacityLoad capacity is the amount of weight a wheel will carry. This number will vary depending on the number of lugs, the PCD, the material used and the type of axle the wheel is used on. A wheel used on a free rolling trailer axle will carry more weight than that same wheel used on the drive or steering axle of a vehicle. All wheels will have the load capacity stamped on the back of the wheel. Phone Mecca Motorsport on 017 811 3189 for more information on this product.

STANDERTON - Lekwa’s traditional healers are up in arms and have expressed their anger and frustration towards the so-called self-appointed project manager of the Traditional Healers. The traditional Healers Forum is funded by the Depart-ment of Health to do consultations and field work within the community of Lekwa.

On the basis of their daily task in the com-munity, members of the Traditional Healers are compensated with R1 100 a month. A team of ten members have reportedly not received their outstanding monthly pay-ments for nine months, due to the fact that funds were not available from July 2014.

However funds were received in April 2015. It came as a relief to forum members, and they were looking forward to receive R9 900 backpay. Their expectations were shattered when they received different pay-ments. Some claim to have been paid for three months, others for five months and others seven months. Angry members al-lege that the project manager refused to talk to them to explain the difference in their payment.

She allegedly chased them away from her office. Members called Cosmos News while protesting outside the office premis-

is. They showed Cosmos News their shab-by pay envelopes with different amounts. They alleged that the current project man-ager has taken over the office illegally after the passing of the former manager in 2014. She did this, they claim, because she is the niece of the late project manager and was never voted into office as entailed in the constitution of the forum.

When contacted for comment against the accusations, Ms Christina Hlatshwayo denied allegations of the illegal occupation of the office. She defended her position by declaring that she was appointed by the late project manager before he died. Answering question of short payment, she said mem-bers failed to bring their performance forms to the office on a monthly basis which was the standard procedure. She could not pay members without return forms. Members have a different view. They claim she re-fused to provide them with forms, some claim that she told their leader that they were all fired.

Members accuse the manager of corrup-tion and nepotism. She denies this claim, while the storm seems far from over. Cos-mos News will keep a close eye on any de-velopments. DM

NATIONAL - There will be food shortages if the government’s land reform policy went ahead, Grain SA has warned. “We have elec-tricity load shedding. Is food shedding next? Will we take turns at eating?” asked Jannie de Villiers, CEO of Grain SA during a media conference at the Nampo show in Bothaville.

“We are not saying no to land reform, but we are looking for plans that can ensure food security in the country. But grain producers say no to minister Gugile Nkwinti’s [Minis-ter of Rural Development and Land Reform] 50:50 land ownership plans. “These plans fall outside government’s policy spelt out in the NDP,” he said. ”If this plan is implemented, we will not be able to feed the people of South Africa. The 50:50 plan will kill us.” He said the plan will be detrimental to the poor. “The first need in this country is food, not land.”

According to Grain SA, the 50:50 plan is unconstitutional. “The constitution is not a government policy document – it belongs to all of us. It is supreme to all of us, and that includes government. We expect government to adhere to it,” De Villiers said.

De Villiers said more than 60% of farmland is covered by debt. Some 83% of farmers pro-duce food with production loans. “If the plan is implemented, 83% of farmers won’t be able to produce food.” He further said the grain producers also say no to land ceilings. “The minister has consulted with us about ceilings, but the numbers when it comes to sizes of farms were not discussed.

“If we start putting a 5 000Ha ceiling on grain farmers, it will kill us. For 20 years farmers have not received subsidies. Farmers have equipped themselves to farm on a bigger scale, because scale is the solution to a lack of government support. “How are the 70% of the population that will live in urban areas by 2030 going to get food with these ceilings?”

The 50:50 proposal involves the govern-ment buying half of a farmer’s land and al-locate it to their farm workers. The land ceil-ing proposal involves ceilings for small-scale commercial farmers being set at 1 000Ha, for a medium-scale commercial farm at 2 500ha and a large-scale commercial farm 5 000ha. JD

Rég agter hulle is me Marike Herman, gasvryheidstudie-onderwyser van Hoërskool Standerton.

Will food-shedding be next?

According to Grain SA, the proposed 50:50 plan is unconstitutional. For 20 years farmers have not received subsidies and had to equip themselves to farm on a bigger scale, because scale is the solution to a lack of government support. Grain SA also wonders how 70% of the population that will live in urban areas by 2030 are going to get food with these ceilings?

Eight of Standerton Primary School’s teachers underwent a rigorous regional netball grading course at Laerskool Goedehoop in Secunda in April and have each passed with flying colours. Proving that they are a force to be reckoned with, these dedicated educators can now blow the whistle during Gert Sibande championships. At the back, from left to right, are Mss Ursula Deminey, Heleen Michels and Marli Langenhoven. In the front are Mss Helga Lehmgrubler, Geyronisha Frankis and Marieke Sandenbergh.

JD
