PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hello fellow alumni, As the current President of the School of Public Health Alumni Board, I am truly excited to be in this position during this transformational time for our school. Now that we have fully transitioned from the school of HPER to the School of Public Health (SPH), it is our time to communicate how we are refocusing the school’s mission to look at public health and wellness in a comprehensive and innovative way.

One of the primary goals of the Alumni Board is to engage as many SPH alumni to make them aware of all the new and exciting changes within the school and to ensure they maintain their membership in the IU Alumni Association. We also want to make sure SPH alumni have access to the tools necessary to stay connected with fellow alumni who are located all over the world.

This year, we will continue to spread the news about our transition to the School of Public Health while educating alumni about how they can stay involved with the school. We will make sure alumni are aware of all the resources they have access to, including individual career services, career fairs, online job postings and mentoring programs.

It will take the full engagement of not only the Alumni Board but also all SPH alumni to ensure our success. The SPH Bloomington Alumni Board is excited about all the new opportunities for our school and are looking forward to working with all of our alumni to continue the growth of our school.

Sincerely,

William Knox, B.S.’00President Alumni Association Board of Directors School of Public Health-Bloomington

WELCOMING A NEW DEAN

On August 15, 2017, the Indiana University School of Public Health–Bloomington welcomed a new dean. Dr. David Allison came to us from the School of Health Professions at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr. Allison worked hard to form close relationships with students at UAB by interacting with them on a more personal level—whether it was hiking nearby trails or taking a bike ride through town—in order to act as a mentor to budding scholars. We are excited to have such a dedicated mentor and leader join the School of Public Health team.

During one of his initial meetings with current faculty and staff at the school, Allison talked about his core values—Truth, Honor, Courage, Camaraderie, Beauty, Beneficence—and how he looks forward to creating an environment that embodies these values in all that we do.

With the introduction of our new leadership, Dean Torabi will return to his teaching role with the Department of Applied Health Science here at the School of Public Health. We are forever grateful for Dean Torabi’s dedication to the school through the transition to the School of Public Health, and are excited to welcome our new dean and move forward into the next chapter of our school’s history.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: DEANA WILLIAMS

Deana Williams, a current School of Public Health student working toward her M.P.H. in Behavioral, Social, and Community Health, has made a big impact on the School of Public Health in her short time here. Deana came to IU from the University of Miami in Ohio. Her passion for educating others in the areas of sexual and reproductive health led her to the School of Public Health here at IU.

In just her first year on campus, Deana has found many ways to fulfill her passion: working as a Sexual Assault Crisis Service intern, becoming a member of the Sexual Health Advocacy Group, working with the Center for Sexual Health Promotion, and working as a research assistant on projects focused on reproductive decision making and the Zika virus. She also relishes any opportunity to connect with School of Public Health alumni.

“Spring semester, I had the wonderful opportunity of attending the SPH Distinguished Alumni Breakfast,” she said. “It was an honor to network with so many successful individuals and receive the valuable advice and mentorship of people who were previously in my shoes.”

Because of Deana’s hard work and involvement in the school and the field of public health, she was just chosen as one of the recipients of the School of Public Health Alumni Board Scholarship. After graduation, Deana hopes to perform community outreach and education to marginalized populations who are at high risk for STIs and HIV/AIDS.

Two School of Public Health-Bloomington alumni, Nadia Nguyen Adams and Nickolas Williams, were recently included in the Indianapolis Business Journal’s 40 under 40 list.

Nadia Nguyen Adams (B.S.’08) is currently the Chief Operating Officer for the Center for Health Innovation and Implementation Science at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Nadia’s passion lies in improving patient care through implementing evidence-based practices in routine health care services.

Nickolas Williams (B.S.’04, M.S.’06), found his way back to IU after a career in the world of sports. For the past three years, he has worked for the Indiana University Foundation, and is now the Senior Associate Director of Regional Development. Nickolas focuses a lot of his time on Washington, D.C., as this is one of IU’s largest alumni markets. He has been instrumental in aiding the school’s $2.5 billion campaign.
