T he United States Flagis the third oldest of the National Stan-dards of the world and is olderthan the Union Jack of Britain or the Tricolor of France.

The flag was first author-ized by Congress on June 14,1777. This date is nowobserved as Flag Day through-out America.

The flag was first flownfrom Fort Stanwix, on the siteof the present city of Rome,

New York, on August 3, 1777.

It was first under fire for threedays later in the Battle of Oriskany on August 6, 1777.

It was first decreed thatthere should be a star and astripe for each state (orthirteen colonies) wherebythere were thirteen originalcolonies at that time.

The three colors of theFlag can be explained as fol-lows: red is for valor, zeal andfervency; the white for hopepurity, cleanliness of life, andrectitude of conduct; the bluestands for the color of heaven,

a reverence to God, loyalty, sincerity, justice and truth.

The star (an ancientsymbol of India, Persia andEgypt) symbolized dominionand sovereignty, as well aslofty aspirations. The constel-lation of the stars within theunion, one star for each state,is emblematic of our FederalConstitution, which reservesto the States their individualsovereignty except as to rightsdelegated by them to theFederal Government.

    The symbolism of the

Flag was thus interpreted byWashington: “We take thestars from Heaven, the redfrom our mother country, sep-arating it by white stripes, thus showing that we haveseparated from her, and thewhite stripes shall godown to posterity represent-ing Liberty.”

In 1791, Vermont, andin 1792, Kentucky wereadmitted to the Union andthe number of stars andstripes was raised to fifteen in

T hese were the ques-tions asked by JamesRyan of his wife, inthe Spielberg movie, SavingPrivate Ryan, aired this pastMemorial Day on AMC. Hewas at the gravesite of Captain John H. Miller, theman sent to find him after his2 brothers were killed duringthe US led Allied Forces inva-sion of Normandy and a 3rdbrother killed in Burma. MattDamon played Ryan oppositeTom Hank’s portrayal of JohnMiller, where Ryan eventuallyunderstood the depth andrisks of Miller’s assignment tolocate him in France so hecould return home as the onlysurvivor of the Ryan brothersgone to war.

Ryan understood theawesome responsibility of liv-ing a life worth saving and the

lives that were lost bringinghim home. He was charged bythose who sacrificed every-thing, to succeed in his life, tobe a good man and live a goodlife. The movie depicts thatPrivate Ryan did indeed do allof the above, surrounded byhis family at the gravesite of his fallen comrade, the com-mander of the mission, anEnglish school teacher, thisbrave leader with his dyingbreath, charged Ryan to“earn it!”

I attended the MemorialDay parade in Wayne lastweek, to see my youngest sonSam, march with the WayneHills High School Band ashe carried the beat, clanging

the cymbals exactly on cuefor 3 miles. American Flagswere everywhere and patriot-ism was on high as each color

guard procession marched bythe grandstand. Veteranswere marching and folksapplauded as the eventsunfolded in front of us.Spectators thanked themarchers for their service toour country, their service totheir communities and thesacrifices they endured, sothe rest of us can live freefrom harm and in peace.Servicemen and women, vol-unteer firefighters, emer-gency medical service work-ers, first aid volunteers, ambulance drivers, sheriff officers, police officers andother dedicated workers andvolunteers, all marchingtogether to honor those wholost their lives in service to

their country and those whocontinue to serve their coun-try and their neighborhoodsthrough volunteerism.

So now I must ask you,the reader, if you are honoringthose who died defending ourway of life by leading an hon-orable life worth dying for?How would those men wholanded in Normandy, to facebullets and bombs, judge yourlife that many of them died todefend and keep safe? Wouldyou make them proud orwould their sacrifice havebeen in vain based solely onthe example of how you havelived your life? It’s an intro-spective point to ponder and Isuggest that you do so for amoment, asking yourself the

same two questions that JamesRyan asked his wife: “Am I agood man and have I led agood life?” The importantthing to realize is that if youhonestly answer the questionsin the negative, there is plen-ty of time to change youranswer by doing those thingsthat will make your life a greatone as well as being a betterperson. One form of measureis the value you place in help-ing others where you willincur no economic benefit.Another, would be deter-mined by the financial assis-tance you provide to othersand a 3rd would be based onthe personal time you investto benefit others.

    Financially speaking, vir-

tually everyone can afford towrite a check, in an amountnot injurious to your budget,to help other less fortunate

people. Two things I can attestto is that whatever you self-lessly give away, it is returnedto you and much more. Notthe same day, month, year oreven decade, but, it will comeback and in a much largeramount! The second is, youwill feel amazingly wealthy asa result of the action to give toothers in much greater needthan yourself. There was an adslogan years ago that said,“Try it – you’ll like it!”; whenit comes to charitable givingthe same slogan would applytoday!

My financial advice fortoday is two-fold: live belowyour means and pay yourself first, even before your otherbills. Live on less to savemore, invest more and givemore. One day you may findthat your discipline, sacrificeand consistency has paid-off handsomely for all concerned, both within your family circleas well as outside your circle. When you look at your spouselater in life to ask the ques-tions that James Ryan asked of his, she may well respond inthe extreme affirmative stat-ing you are a good man, adding that she is proud of youfor living a good life and pro-viding your family with theexample of a good an honor-able life too!

W hich of course means mostly women will read this. Sowhen your wife, girlfriend, or significant other handsyou this, read it guys. It could save your life and yourrelationship.

Look, I’m 58, I’ve been receiving chiropractic adjustments for a longtime. I haven’t had the need for any medication in forty years orso. And I sure as he** don’t need any stinking Viagra or Cialis. Andneither do my male patients who have been getting regular adjust-ments, and some of them have 15 and 20 years on me!

This is simple guys, it ain’t rocket science. Everyone knows thatyour brain runs your whole body. That means everything. You knowyour spinal cord delivers the mes-sages from your brain to your bodythat tell your body to do what youwant it to do and need it to do. If

those messages don’t go throughyour spinal cord 100%, then yourbody isn’t working at 100%. Thatcould mean heart problems, highblood pressure, stomach issues, orother parts that don’t do their job.

Things don’t work right because the messages from your brainwhich are supposed to tell your body how to work are not goingthrough your spinal cord completely. Picture an electric circuit witha dimmer switch that is turned down part way.

Look, your back might not hurt. But neither do all cavities. Yourspinal bones can be subluxated, which means that your spinalbones are twisted, pressing on your spinal cord, slowing down mes-sages to your body parts. Having spinal subluxations does notmean your back will hurt, but it does mean that your body partsare not getting messages they need in order to work properly.

Having subluxations in your spine can be causing all kinds of bodyparts to malfunction. It could mean back pain, high blood pressure, heart problems, indigestion or kidney or liver problems or lowblood pressure in some parts when you need them to have highblood pressure (a.k.a E.D.)

Get your spine checked guys. Spinalsubluxations can cause all kinds of health problems. Do it for yourself.Do it for the beautiful person who gotyou to read this.

1818 Congress enacted thatthe number of stripes bereduced and restricted hence-forth to thirteen representingthe thirteen original states;while a star should be addedfor each succeeding state.

    That law still holds truetoday.

The name “Old Glory”was given to our NationalFlag on August 10, 1831, by

Captain William Driver of the brig Charles Doggett.

The Flag was first carriedin battle at the Brandywine,September 11, 1777. It firstflew over foreign territory on

was rendered by the FrenchAdmiral LaMotte Piquet, off Quiberon Bay, February 13,1778.

The United States Flag isunique in the deep and noblesignificance of its message tothe entire world, a message of national independence withindividual liberty, idealismand patriotism. It symbolizesnational independence andpopular sovereignty. It is notthe Flag of a reigning family orroyal house, but of 205 mil-lion free people welded into a

Pediatrics recommends thatparents wait until after achild’s fourth birthday toteach them how to swim. Thisis when children have devel-oped enough to understandcommands and have themotor skills required for swim-ming. At this point, parentscan register children for swim-ming lessons with trainedinstructors.

Introduce playing in thewater early on. Parents

    should make sure their chil-

dren grow accustomed toplaying in the water. Manykids start to like the wateraround the time they becometoddlers, when bathing intro-duces them to splashing andbobbing toys. Use theseopportunities to take yourchild into the water, so he orshe acclimates to feeling thewater on his or her body andface. Kids can sit with adultson pool steps or retrieve toysfrom within reach. An adult

always should be nearby.Wait before submerging

kids. The American Red Crosssays to wait until a child isaround age three before sub-merging him or her under thewater. Young kids can swallowa lot of water, which can bedangerous. Sputtering wateralso may turn a child off toswimming completely.

Begin in calm water. Theopen ocean can be daunting, even to adults. So it might bebetter to begin swimming les-sons in a calm body of water, such as a lake or pool.

Invest in formal swim-ming lessons. Parental percep-tions and anxieties may inter-fere with parents’ abilities toproperly teach their children

how to swim. Therefore, hirethird-party professionalinstructors to teach kids toswim. The Red Cross can putyou in touch with certifiedswimming instructors who alsoare knowledgeable in first aid.

As children becomemore confident in the water, they can practice swimmingstrokes and submerging them-selves for underwater swim-ming.

Extreme heat can beunpleasant for anyone, and pets are no excep-tion. While it’s easy for menand women to detect if theirbodies are responding nega-tively to heat, those warningsigns may not be so prevalentin pets, who may suffer insilence as the mercury contin-ues to rise.

Pet owners must pay spe-cial attention to their pets onhot days, which the HumaneSociety of the United Statesnotes can be both uncomfort-able and dangerous for pets. Inan effort to help pet ownersprotect their pets from thesummer heat, the HSUS

offers the following tipsto pet owners who want tokeep their pets cool and safethis summer.

Don’t leave pets in aparked car. The temperatureinside a vehicle can quicklyapproach dangerous levels onhot days, so pet owners shouldnever leave thei r pets inparked cars, even if they leavethe air conditioning on andthe engine running. TheHSUS notes that on an 85-degree day, temperaturesinside cars with slightlycracked windows can reach102 degrees in as little as 10minutes. Rather thantaking pets with you on car

trips, leave them at homeinside a comfortably air condi-tioned room where they won’tbe vulnerable to rising tem-peratures.

Change pet’s exercisereg imen. Pet owners whomake sure their pets get dailyexercise should change suchroutines when temperaturesare on the rise. Midday walksor jogs should be switched toevenings or early mornings, when temperatures tend to beat their most moderate. Inaddition, cut back on the timespent exercising, as pets mayhave trouble breathing on hotdays. When taking your dogfor a jog or a run in the sum-

mertime, do so on the grass, avoiding asphalt, as hotasphalt can do significantdamage to your pet’s paws.

Be mindful of your breed.Dog owners should recognizethat certain dogs can handlethe heat better than others.Short-nosed breeds have aharder time in extreme heatbecause their shorter airwaysdon’t allow as much time forthe air they breathe in to coolas dogs with longer noses. Inaddition, the HSUS pointsout that dogs with white-col-ored ears are more susceptible

Couches are an impor-tant component of living rooms and

dens, serving as comfortableplaces to relax. Sofas will besat on, slept on and, if youngchildren are in the house, sometimes jumped on.

Homeowners looking fornew sofas often prioritizecomfort, but they also want asofa that can withstand the

test of time. Although there’sno magic formula, a sturdysofa should have a lifespan of around 10 years. According toHouzz, quality sofas shouldfeel solid and heavy. Theyshould have joints that aredouble doweled and fittedwith corner blocks that areboth glued and screwed (not

stapled) into place. Overtime, even the sturdiest couchcan start to show its age andlook a bit past its prime. Don’tfret. There are some easy waysto give that aging sofa amakeover.

Begin by reviewing theservice agreement. If you pur-chased an extended warrantyor protection plan on the fur-niture, you may be eligible for

repairs at no cost. Stores willrestrict just what is coveredunder such service plans, andregular wear and tear may beexcluded. However, rips, cer-tain stains or opening seamsmay be eligible for repair.Covered costs means not hav-ing to spend any money out of pocket.

Cleaning may be anothersimple fix. Check with themanufacturer’s guidelines forcleaning. Certain fabricsrequire specific cleaning solu-tions. If you are ever unsureabout what to use to clean thesofa, use a mild solution of soapand water in an inconspicuousspot first. Many carpet andupholstery cleaning solutionscan be used on furniture. Use

sparingly and test for color-fast-ness before cleaning the entirecouch. For those who are skit-tish about cleaning the sofa ontheir own, consult with a pro-fessional upholstery cleaningservice.

of an aging sofa. Fitted slip-covers slide right over theexisting couch cushions andcan change an outdated sofainto one that looks brandnew. Measuring correctly andbuying accordingly will helpachieve a seamless look.

There also are some easydo-it-yourself fixes for couch-es that may be sagging orlooking deflated. If seat cush-

ions can be removed, considerplacing firm cardboard orwood on top of the springs toprovide more firmness.Cushions may begin to sagwhen the springs underneathbegin to lose their elasticity. If the cushions are the problem, replacing the foam in thecushions or the loose-fill stuff-

ing in the pillows can breathenew life into the couch. Foamcan begin to disintegrate andlose its shape and integrity.Craft stores, home improve-ment centers and fabric storesoften carry foam products, but

those you can’t find might beavailable via online orders.

Do not give up on a sofajust yet. It may be repaired orgiven a fresh look to make itappear like new.

can go a long way to making ahome more appealing. If yourthumb is anything but green, hire a professional lawn andgarden service to help youestablish a lush, green lawn.Dress to impress

The entryway to a homeis the first thing visitors willsee. Be sure the front door andentryway are in good repair. Apop of color can’t hurt, either.

If you do not like the idea of painting the door a vivid hue, dress it up with a colorfulwreath or another decorativeaccent. Carry your interiordesign style to the outdoors aswell. Welcoming accents, such as cushioned chairs orpotted plants, also add curbappeal. Consider painting

house numbers on a terra-cotta pot and filling it withplants. The pot will be deco-rative and functional.

Rely on symmetrySymmetry is pleasing to

the eye and easy to arrange.
