Reflections by Father John (1 Tim. 2:5)

Sometimes other Christians will ask us, “do you really pray to Mary or the Saints, do you not know there is only ONE Mediator between God and men?” It is true, there is only ONE Mediator between God and men, however, Jesus allows others to share in that mediation. Below I want to give you Scripture passages that show that we all share in that mediation. “I urge you, [brothers,] by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in the struggle by your prayers to God on my behalf, that I may be delivered from the disobedient in Judea, and that my ministry for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the holy ones.” . . (Rom 15:30-32) Here St. Paul is directly asking other Christians to pray for him, if what he said in 1 Tim 2:6 was meant absolutely literally then Paul is contradicting himself, he should ask no one else to pray for him, he should always go to Jesus. Yet, one could argue, Paul did not mean we cannot ask the living to pray for us, but rather, those who have died we can no longer ask to pray for us because of a Scriptural mandate:

“Sometimes Fundamentalists object to asking our fellow Christians in heaven to pray for us by declaring that God has forbidden contact with the dead in passages such as Deuteronomy 18:10–11. In fact, he has not, because he at times has given it—for example, when he had Moses and Elijah appear with Christ to the disciples on the Mount of Transfiguration (Matt. 17:3). What God has forbidden is necromantic practice of conjuring up spirits. “There shall not be found among you any one who . . . practices divination, a soothsayer, or an augur, or a sorcerer, or a charmer, or a medium, or a wizard, or a necromancer. . . . For these nations, which you are about to dispossess, give heed to soothsayers and to diviners; but as for you, the Lord your God has not allowed you so to do. “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brethren—him you shall heed” (Deut. 18:10–15). God thus indicates that one is not to conjure the dead for purposes of gaining information; one is to look to God’s prophets instead.” https://www.catholic.com/tract/praying-to-the-saints

The Catholic understanding of the communion of saints is very familial, we are a family and the Church always remains such even for those who have gone before us. Though we are separated in the physical sense, we are here and they are there, yet in Christ Jesus we always remain one. When we ask them to pray for us they hear us through the Spirit and their prayers do not cease, for where they are they also want us to be, just as Jesus does. When it comes to mediation between God and men, yes, Jesus is THE Mediator, but in His mediation he allows us all to participate, why, because we are family! God bless you,

Father John

Seeking Voices!

Our Holy Family Choir is once again seeking adult and youth voices to join our faith-filled singers. We rehearse every Thursday in the church at 7:00 p.m. and go over the music program for the upcoming weekend. We are also involved in Confirma on, Easter, Christmas and special celebra ons through-out the year. Music is a very important part of the liturgy and we need good, clear voices to make a joyful noise

unto the Lord I ask you to prayerfully consider joining our adult group. We laugh, we pray and we sing. It’s an awesome experience and we would love for you to join us. Please leave a message at the parish office or email me, Jeanne Passanante, directly to [email protected]

HOLY FAMILY GRIEF SUPPORT FOR HEARTS ON THE MEND We all have experienced losses in our life. The normal and natural reaction to any significant emotional loss is grief. And grief hurts! We need support and help to get through these times. Grief Support Groups help us cope with the loss of a loved one by being with people who share similar experiences. They also journey with us in rebuilding our

lives and provide us with a safe environment and the accurate information about grief and grief recovery.

The support group will meet for eight weeks on Thursdays, beginning October 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the Fausto Conference Room. Whether your grief is new and raw or lingering and unresolved, these sessions will help you to heal and move toward peace and acceptance of the absence of the loved one in your life. If you are someone who has lost a dear one to death; we welcome you to join for these sessions.

For more information, please call Deacon Joe at the parish office, 856-228-1616, or email: deacon [email protected]
