Americans of German origin.

On arrival in Kenya in 1897, the Kriegers spent a few months at Machakos with Peter Cameron

Scott, an American Missionary of the Africa Inland Mission (AIM), who was working among the

Akambas. In the same year, the Krieger moved on and temporarily settled at “Marambu” near

Kibichoi along Ruiru River. They then moved on to Thimbigua along Riara Stream about five

miles northwest of Nairobi.

It was at Thimbigua that the Kriegers were joined by the Rev. William Porter Knapp and his wife

Myrtle Isabelle Knapp, who also were missionaries from America. Mrs. Knapp was a teacher

and she and her husband had only been married for a year before embarking on this mission

work. The two were devout, evangelical Christians of the conservative persuasion. They were

both resolute in character and confident in their ability to overcome the many challenges that

they would come across.

At their time of arrival the pestilence of small pox and famine were at the highest and disease,

death and despair were everywhere. The Knapps were joined shortly afterwards by Dr. John E.

Henderson, a Medical Doctor at Thimbigua. The three, subsequently moved on and became the
