The 6th edition of Austria’s most prominent business event in the GCC brings a line-up of high prolific speakers highlighting essential and current topics of the Gulf economies.

A warm welcome to all participants of the AUSTRIA CONNECT Gulf 2015, an event, which by now is the most important annual Austrian commercial networking event in the Middle East. Thanks to the efforts of our dedicated commercial office this meeting has been ever more resounding and successful since being established in 2010.

Indeed, Dubai and the UAE serve as the ideal location and hub for this focus on the wider Middle East given its role as most open city and economy of the region and ever expanding trade links. The city is now reaching out even to Africa and an increasing number of companies base their related operations now in Dubai.

In July, we have witnessed the signature of the Iran Nuclear Accord in Vienna, almost exactly 200 years after the famous congress of Vienna took place. A historical event that underlines the traditional and ongoing role of our wonderful capital Vienna in international negotiations and diplomacy. As with the negotiations that ended the long period of the Napoleonic wars that shook European political and social order to its very foundations we are working on creating foundations and common understanding that will lead us to an era of more cooperation and less confrontation and more to a race to commerce than a race to arms.

Nowhere on Earth a region is more in need of such actions and developments than the Middle East where wide areas are becoming zones of horror that people flee in search of safety and a better future for their kids.

The search for a better future is at the core of one of the major topics of this event – education. Equipping future generations with the tools to manage the challenges of an ever increasing and potentially disruptive technological and social change is a paramount task. We are proud to offer well-proven Austrian expertise for this country, highlighted by the opening of a branch of the renowned Viennese Tourism and Hospitality University “Modul” in Dubai in 2016. As the UAE strives to become a “knowledge based economy” and have set themselves high goals and aspirations for the future, our expertise can add an important contribution to this society and at the same time offer promising opportunities for Austrian operators in this field.

He held management positions in Austrian SMEs in the medical sector before joining the Austrian Foreign Trade Promotion Organization ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA in 1993. After 9 years as Commercial Attaché in Venezuela, South Korea and Italy, he was promoted as Commercial Counsellor to Turkey in 2003 where he ran the Austrian Trade Commission in Ankara until 2010. During that period, Austrian exports increased by 50 % and Austria jumped from 23rd place to become the largest investor to Turkey in 2010 and 2011.

Until 2014 Richard Bandera was the Head of go-international, the Export and Foreign Direct Investment Promotion Initiative of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKO) and the Austrian Ministry of Science, Research and Economy (BMWFW) in Vienna. The program with a fund value of 150 million Euro since 2005, aims at the internationalization of Austrian businesses leveraged by a factor of 1:55 in terms of additional exports generated for each Euro invested.

Richard Bandera is now heading ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA UAE, the Commercial Section of the Austrian Embassy in Abu Dhabi and is Commercial Counsellor to the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain and Pakistan. He is also coordinating the Austrian export promotion activities with ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA offices in Qatar and Oman.

H.E. Walter Ruck President, Vienna Chamber of Commerce and Industry

In June 2014, building contractor and engineer Walter Ruck was elected President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WKW) by the Vienna Economic Parliament. The 50-year-old Viennese building contractor had previously served for four years as head of the Crafts and Trades Sector and a top official of WKW. Walter Ruck is also the head of the Vienna Business Association.

Born on 6 August 1963 in Vienna, after leaving school, Walter Ruck studied at Vienna University of Technology and in 1989 took the examination to become a master builder. In 1991 he took over as manager of the building company founded by his father in 1977 (W. Ruck GmbH) and has been its sole director since 2004. The company specializes not only in the restoration of listed facades but is also very involved in educating young employees. Walter Ruck is also a court-certified expert and Vice President of the Austrian Standards Institute.

As President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and Industry he legally represents the interests of all Viennese companies, from one-person businesses and small trade organizations to industry and banks, a total of about 130,000 members. The focus of the work of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce and Industry is active involvement in economic affairs. This is achieved through advocacy, advice, service, information and training activities for entrepreneurs, and a global presence in the Austrian foreign trade offices.

H.E. Peter Elsner-Mackay Austrian Ambassador, Austrian Embassy Abu Dhabi

H.E. Peter Elsner-Mackay is holding the position of Austrian Ambassador to the UAE since 2012. He began his career with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1994 and has had several responsibilities and assignments during his career with postings in Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

He started off as a desk officer for the department of political affairs for the Americas, attaché at the Austrian Embassy in Nigeria and attaché at the Austrian permanent mission to the IAEA in Vienna. Later, he was posted to the Austrian Embassy in France and served as Counsellor for press affairs and public relations in Rome and afterwards was selected to serve as the deputy chief of mission and head of the Austrian Cultural Institute in Cairo.

His last position before taking over as the Austrian Ambassador to the UAE was the Deputy Chief of State Protocol at the Federal Ministry or European and International Affairs.

Hassan Al Hashemi Vice President of International Relations Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry

Hassan Al Hashemi joined Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry in 2006 and is currently the Vice President of International Relations. As the principal liaison between governmental authorities and the private sector, Mr. Al Hashemi’s department represents Dubai Chamber on the international arena and in turn is one of the organization’s most active departments.

The Department’s main duties include negotiating cooperative agreements with foreign partners, organizing major events as well as high level business networking programs, representing the Chamber at local and international events, and organizing inbound and outbound delegations and trade missions.

Since 2012, Mr. Al Hashemi has led the implementation of Dubai Chamber’s ProDubai initiative, which involves setting up a number of International Representative Offices in targeted locations around the world. After a master degree of Business Administration at the Johannes-Keppler University in Linz (Austria) including a one year European Exchange Program in Bilbao (Spain) Mr. Pierre Prunis started his career in the year 2000 at the Asian Desk of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber in Vienna.

Karl Wöber, born 1964 in Vienna, Austria, is Full Professor and Founding President of MODUL University Vienna. He is the elected chairman of the Austrian Private University Conference.

Sebastian holds a MSc in International Relations from the London School of Economics and a diploma in political sciences the Free University Berlin.
