Welcome Father John S. Chen! Beginning September 1st we welcome Fr. John Chen as the ad-ministrator of St. Eulalia Parish. Fr. Chen will join an outstanding legacy of spiritual leaders who have shepherded St Eulalia Parish stretching back to Msgr. Joe Lyons.

Fr. Chen was born June 17, 1968 in his native Qingdao, Shan-dong Province, P.R. China. He was ordained to the priesthood in Beijing’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, a priest of the diocese of Qingdao. After ordination, he came to Boston and re-ceived a Master of Divinity Degree at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton. Fr. Tom Nestor was one of his professors. He then went on to receive a Licentiate degree from Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge and a doctorate in Higher Education from Boston College. Fr. Chen returned to China and served as the rector and theology professor at Beijing National Seminary. He came back to Boston in 2004 and served as a parochial vicar in the Quincy collaborative. In 2015 he became a parochial vicar in the Lexington collaborative.

This year Fr. Chen celebrates his 25th anniversary to the priest-hood.

We look forward to receiving Fr. Chen into the St. Eulalia com-munity, to his spiritual leadership, and to the gifts he will be sharing with us.

Weekend Masses: Our church building is open for a 4:00p.m. Vigil Mass on Saturday and a 10:00a.m. Sunday Mass. The usual protocols will be in place. Because of social distancing there are only 54 places available in the church build-ing. You must bring a mask with you and if possible hand sanitizer. Greeters will guide you to an available seat. Mis-salettes and hymnals are not in the pews because the virus can remain on them. There is no congregational sing-ing. Those receiving communion will be guided row by row, keeping at least six feet between each person. Commun-ion is in the hand. We are still urging that those 65 and over, those with serious health issues, and those with respiratory problems or compromised immune systems continue to remain at home and view Masses and worship services on social media. Signing Up for Mass: If you wish to participate in one of the weekend Masses, you may sign up on our website or call the parish office at 781-729-8220 beginning on the Monday before the weekend you wish to attend. Holy Communion: On this Sunday, August 30 there will again be an opportunity for you to receive Holy Communion following the 10:00a.m. live streaming Mass. You may come to the church building from 11:15a.m. – Noon. Join Us in Praying the Rosary: During these difficult days we certainly need prayer. Come and join with our small group that gathers each evening at 7:00p.m. in front of the Our Lady of Fatima Shrine in the parking area. We walk and pray the Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Annual Catholic Appeal: Our gratitude is owed to those of you who have already donated to the Catholic Appeal to fund the many needed ministries of the Archdiocese of Boston. To those who have customarily contributed, but have not yet done so this year, a letter from Father John will go out in the near future. To those who have not usually given to the appeal, we urge you to consider this. Due to the pandemic our Church like you and your family is struggling. If you are able to assist, thank you. If you cannot, we understand.

S A 30 First Reading Jeremiah 20:7–9 (124A) Jeremiah only reluctantly spoke God’s prophetic word. He tried to hold back, but the word burned like fire in his heart. Responsorial Psalm Psalm 63:2, 3–4, 5–6, 8–9 My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. Second Reading Romans 12:1–2 Paul urged the Ro-mans to offer their bodies to God as a living sacrifice and not to conform to this age but to be transformed by God. Gospel Acclamation cf. Ephesians 1:17–18 May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ enlighten the eyes of our hearts, that we may know what is the hope that belongs to our call. Gospel Matthew 16:21–27 Jesus said, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” S W A 31 31 Mon 1 Cor 2:1-5/Lk 4:16-30 1 Tue 1 Cor 2:10b-16/Lk 4:31-37 2 Wed 1 Cor 3:1-9/Lk 4:38-44 3 Thu 1 Cor 3:18-23/Lk 5:1-11 4 Fri 1 Cor 4:1-5/Lk 5:33-39 5 Sat 1 Cor 4:6b-15/Lk 6:1-5 6 SUN Ez 33:7-9/Rom 13:8-10/Mt 18:15-20 D W A 17 Masses: $ 1,085 Mail In: $ 1,048 Online: $ 1,170 Total: $ 3,303

OSR D C First, thanks to all for your continued support of our par-ish through this difficult time. Your dedication and gen-erosity are truly amazing. In the past several weeks, Cit-izens Bank has been rejecting checks that have the let-ters OSR anywhere on the ‘Pay to…’ line. We are in the

process of trying to resolve this with them, but until such time, please do not write the letters ‘OSR’ on the ‘Pay to...’ line of your checks. Again….Thank You! T Y S M F P

With “Special Thanks” to the Parishioners of St. Eu-lalia Parish for your over-whelming generosity of food donations to St. Mat-thew Food Pantry Ministry

these past two weeks. We who volunteer at the Food Pantry are truly humbled by your kindness and generosi-ty. We received about 2000 lbs. of valuable food prod-ucts of exactly the items we needed to receive, to restock our shelves. This pandemic has increased the number of marginalized folks who are dependent on others for food support. The effect of this demand has put a strain on our suppliers as well as the pantries themselves. Again, thank you for your kindness and goodwill. Blessings and Stay Safe. , S S Reconciliation—While there are presently no scheduled regular times for confession, this important sacrament is available by request. Simply call the parish and leave a message for the office at 781-729-8220. Just a phone number will suffice and a message that you are calling about confession. A priest will get back to you to set up a convenient time. Baptism—Also, the Sacrament of Baptism is still avail-able for any child who is in need. Due to the safety guidelines, it would be a private Baptism limited to ten people including the priest and the child. For more in-formation, please call Louise at the office. Sacrament of the Sick—We have a team of priests within the Archdiocese who are trained and prepared to bring the Sacrament of the Sick to persons suffering from the Corona Virus in hospitals, nursing homes, and other institutions. The way to contact one of these priests is through the local parish. Here at St Eulalia you would contact the office at any time at 781-729-8220. Also keep in mind that there are some institutions that will still not allow a priest access to the patient.

By Dr. Scott Hahn For Your Life Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle A) Jeremiah 20:7-9 Psalm 63:2-6, 8-9 Romans 12:1-2 Matthew 16:21-27 Today's First Reading catches the prophet Jeremiah in a moment of weakness. His intimate lamen-tation contains some of the strongest language of doubt found in the Bible. Following God's call, he feels abandoned. Preaching His Word has brought him only derision and violence. But God does not deceive - and Jeremiah knows this. He tests the just (see Jeremiah 20:11-12), and disciplines His children through their sufferings and trials (see Hebrews 12:5-7). What Jeremiah learns, Jesus states explicitly in today's Gospel. To follow Him is to take up a cross, to deny yourself - your priorities, preferences, and comforts. It is to be willing to give it all up, even life itself, for the sake of His gospel. As Paul says in today's Epistle, we have to join our-selves to the passion of Christ, to offer our bodies - our whole beings - as living sacrifices to God. By His cross, Jesus has shown us what Israel's sacrifices of dead animals were meant to teach - that we owe to God all that we have. God's kindness is a greater good than life itself, as we sing in today's Psalm. The only thanks we can offer is our spiritual worship - to give our lives to the service of His will (see Hebrews 10:3-11; Psalm 50:14, 23). Peter doesn't yet get this in today's Gospel. As it was for Jeremiah, the cross is a stumbling block for Peter (see 1 Corinthians 1:23). This too is our natural temptation - to refuse to believe that our sufferings play a necessary part in God's plan. That's how people think, Jesus tells us today. But we are called to the renewal of our minds - to think as God thinks, to will what He wills. In the Mass, we once again offer ourselves as perfect and pleasing sacrifices of praise (see He-brews 13:15). We bless Him as we live, confident that we will find our lives in losing them, that with the riches of His banquet, our souls will be satisfied.
