TÜà WxÑtÜàÅxÇà The art rooms have been a place of real energy as Year Eight Art students approach the conclusion of their first unit of Art. As their creations reach their final stages of production they are starting to see the rewards of their imaginative and innovative thinking and their persistence in exploring new ways of working. We look forward to displaying the resolved works. Some of their work is presented below. Leonie McCulkin - Art Coordinator

ON STREET PARKING CHANGES The BCC has advised of a number of changes in parking in the streets around the College including:

1. The current passenger loading zone signs in front of the College on Cavendish Road will be replaced with standard loading zone signs. This will mean that cars can still only stand for 2 minutes during the nominated times. However, buses can stand for up to 30 minutes.

2. The existing 2-minute passenger loading zone in Lade Street will be extended by approximately 24 meters which will provide for an additional 4 to 5 cars at any one time.

You continued compliance with traffic and parking conditions around the College will ensure the safety of students and other members of the community. Thank you. Noel Williams - Business Manager

I would like to remind parents and students that the Maths help room commenced again yesterday Monday 22nd April. It is held Monday - Friday from 7.30am - 8.15am in Room 219. Last term we had a great turnout of girls wanting that little extra help with a question or an explanation of a difficult concept or even just having a place to quietly work on Maths. Whatever the reason, all year levels are welcome so please encourage your daughter to take advantage of this opportunity. Adrian Corrado - Mathematics Coordinator

`âá|v axãá Congratulations - To all students who performed in the first Autumn Concert last Friday night. Feedback I have received from conductors, staff and parents was extremely positive. Well done! I hope you are all looking forward to the second instalment of the concert series this coming Friday!

Autumn Concert 2 – Could students and parents please note the following important information for this Friday’s concert:

Students need to be aware that school rules regarding mobile phones apply at all school performances. Phones should be turned off and in the girls’ pockets. Any phone which is visible WILL be confiscated.

It is not appropriate for audience members to talk during a performance. There were a number of students at last Friday’s concert who did not follow this simple courtesy, which is highly disrespectful to their peers on stage.

It was also noticed at last week’s concert that many students were wearing make-up. Though make-up is not part of the school uniform, we understand that it is often needed on stage when performing under lights. However, I would ask that parents make sure their daughters do not wear excessive amounts of make-up – most of the night is spent in the audience.

All attending performers should bring a plate of food for supper

Clarinet Ensemble – Due to this Thursday’s public holiday, rehearsal will be held on Friday morning instead so that the group is properly prepared for their performance at Friday’s concert.

Upcoming events - Loreto College is well regarded in the local community for both the quality of its music ensembles and our students’ willingness to give generously of their time. In this light, two of our groups have performances at community events in the next few weeks. Firstly Flute Ensemble One will play at the “Cycles of Life” Forum featuring speakers such as columnist Kathleen Noonan (St James Church, Wed 1 May 7 pm to 9:30pm, arrive 6:30 pm and playing at approximately 8 pm). The following weekend Chorale will sing at a Heart Foundation Memorial and Thanksgiving Service (St Stephens’ Cathedral, Sun 5 May, 2 pm service).

Symphony Orchestra – In preparation for this Friday’s concert performance, Orchestra has been rehearsing at Loreto in the Mary Ward Centre so far this year. As our next performance will be for QCMF, rehearsals will now move back to Villanova’s Augustine Centre (as of next Monday 29 April). We will once again use the Villanova bus to transport the majority of students to Villa each week but need the help of 1 or 2 parents to cover the whole group. Could any parent who is willing to assist on a weekly or one-off basis please email the music department ([email protected]) urgently so that we can organise transport arrangements? Similarly, if you would rather provide transport for your own daughter, please contact us by email to let us know. Lastly, collection of students will therefore be 5pm at Villanova College (Sixth Avenue Coorparoo) each week.

Loreto Music Festival – Heats for the Festival will begin next week. A schedule for all heats has been published on the Music Noticeboard today. Students must take careful note of the following:

There are sometimes multiple heats for one section – all students should attend the first heat. If you are unavailable for any heat, you should contact the teacher adjudicating that section and organise with them which heat you are able to perform at.

If you decide you are not prepared enough to perform at your designated heat, you must contact the teacher adjudicating that section prior to the day of the heat. If you do this, then there will be no penalty. If you simply do not show up, 5 points will be deducted from your house tally!

It is compulsory for all students to bring a copy of their music to the heat to hand in to their adjudicator.

Don’t forget that you cannot perform a piece that you have learnt during rehearsals with your regular ensembles (eg Vocal quartet performing a Senior Choir piece learnt last year). Ben Langford - Director of Music

ctÜxÇàBfàâwxÇà B [ÉÅxÜÉÉÅ gxtv{ \ÇàxÜä|xãá On Tuesday, 30 April we will be conducting interviews for each student and her parent/s with one of her Homeroom teachers. The purpose of this interview is to reflect on the student’s progress and to make positive and practical plans for the future. The interviews will have a slightly different focus depending on the student’s Year Level, eg Year 8’s will reflect on the process of settling into secondary school and Year 11’s on their adjustment to senior schooling. The Year 10 interviews will form part of the development of each student’s Senior Education Training Plan. Interviews will be conducted between 1.30pm and 6.30pm and will be for approximately 15 minutes. Information about these interviews was sent home last week. Please contact the College urgently if youhave not received this. Classes will conclude at 12.30pm. Students may go home or be supervised at school during the remainder of the afternoon. This interview is in addition to the Parent/Student/Subject Teacher interviews held in July when parents have the opportunity to talk with each of their daughter’s teachers about her progress in particular subjects. We hope this interview opportunity will enhance communication between families and the College and our ability to provide the very best for your daughters academically and pastorally. fv|xÇvx WxÑtÜàÅxÇà axãá The term is now in full swing in the Science Department. In addition to our busy on-site curriculum program, there are a number of external enrichment activities available:

The University of Queensland and St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School are hosting the Aspiring Women in Science Conference from 24 - 26 May. It is aimed at girls in Years 10 to 12 wanting to continue their science education at a tertiary level and promises to be an informative and inspiring event.

The QUT Vice-Chancellor’s STEM camp is designed to give students a taste of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines by engaging in a hands-on, intensive exploration of a project in their chosen discipline. Students will work in teams of 3 - 4 and apply their creativity and investigative skills on topics such as: addressing environmental issues; solving problems in the energy, food and medical sectors; and improving information dissemination and security. The STEM Camp is an intellectually challenging four day event, run in the mid semester holiday break in June. The camp is fully funded by QUT – there is no cost for students to attend and it is open to Year 11 students.

The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is a twelve day program for students moving into Year 12 who are thinking about a career in science, engineering and technology. It is held early in 2014 during the school holidays at the Australian National University, Canberra. The NYSF helps students who wish to follow careers in science, engineering and technology by introducing them to research and researchers, by encouraging the achievement of excellence in all their undertakings, and by helping to develop their communication and interpersonal skills.

The Churchie Physics Lecture is an afternoon event on Wednesday 8th May which provides an opportunity for Year 11 or 12 Physics students to interact with physicists at the top of their fields. The keynote address by Dr Brad Carter has the topic “The Search for Earth-Like Worlds”.

The Engineering Link Project is a three day course for Year 11 or 12 Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics students who are interested in exploring engineering as a possible career option. Students work with practising engineers and experience activities that will increase their knowledge about the engineering profession and the industries it is integral to.

The Australian Youth Aerospace Forum (AYAF) is an annual five-day forum open for

students in Years 11 and 12 with a common interest in aerospace, engineering, space sciences, aviation or avionics. Highlights of the forum include presentations from academic and industry professionals, local aerospace industry tours, and group projects and competitions. It will occur at UQ St Lucia, 1-5 July (School holidays) and accommodation will be provided at Emmanuel College if required.

All of these events are great opportunities to investigate possible future career options and meet like-minded young people with an affinity for the Sciences. Any interested students can visit the respective websites for each event, check out the science noticeboard, or see me at the College. Matt Lourigan - Science Coordinator gÜ|ä|t a|z{à      The 2013 Trivia Night will be held on Saturday 18 May in the Mary Ward Centre. The theme will be “All Things American” and

fà i|ÇvxÇà wx ctâÄ axãá A huge “thank you” to the Loreto Community for their generous support of the Easter Collection. We had enough eggs to go to the recipients at the Holland Park Meals on Wheels, as well as their volunteer drivers and also a local nursing home and the St Vinnie’s Inala Family Support Centre. Well done. Many students turned up to deliver the eggs. Unfortunately we had more student volunteers than we needed. All will get points towards their badge. On Wednesday 24th April, members will visit and work at the Nursery Rd State Special School. Our students will be involved in the Special School Anzac ceremony. Next Friday is our first Rosies’ Outreach to the homeless on the street at night. Students will be there from 6.30pm until 10.30 pm. It is a challenging but very worthwhile experience where much insight about life is gained as well as good work done. We have been asked for blankets to distribute to the people we meet at the Rosies outreach. I know personally that those we meet on dark, cold nights (sometimes raining as well) really appreciate blankets or sleeping bags. Bill Kenny - St Vincent de Paul Coordinator
