    Group Handout of Sentences 11

  • Direct Object and Indirect Object Activity

This activity can be completed in a small group or individually. I laminate everything so that I can use it year after year with my students. Each group or individual will receive a packet. I usually use large manila

envelops with clasps so the contents of the activity do not fall out during classes. In the packet, there will be three sets of cards, a directions sheet, a dry-erase marker, and a handout of sentences. I copy the sentences on four different colored papers so that it is easier for the students to organize the sentences.

The groups will put the cards in order to make a sentence. Then the groups will label each subject, verb, direct object, and indirect object with the provided labels. The teacher will walk around the room to facilitate this process.

After the group has completed the sentence cards, they will complete the handout of sentences. The teacher will check to make sure the group members have the correct answers by walking around the room.

Sentence Cards (Key): 1. Michael gives evening classes in bike repair. Michael- subject; gives- verb; classes- direct object 2. We asked him many questions about his job. We-subject; ask- verb; him- indirect object; questions- direct object 3. He used the bike for lesson. He- subject; used- verb; bike- direct object 4. Michael gave me the bike wheel to hold as a demonstration. Michael- subject; gave- verb; me- indirect object; wheel- indirect object

    For the Teacher

  • Finding Direct Objects and Indirect Objects

In the envelop, you will find a set of colored cards. Organize the cards by color. Put the cards in order that make sense as a sentence. Once you have a sentence, label your subject of the sentence, verb, direct object, and indirect object. All sentences may not contain both direct objects and indirect objects.

Look at the handout in the envelop. Using the marker, label the subject, verb, direct object, and indirect object in the sentences. I will come around to check your handout, so please do not erase until I have checked your groups work.
