Dear Parishioners: After several weeks of hearing Jesus increasingly chal-lenging the religious leaders of his time with pointed parables directed at them, this week we hear them re-sponding with an insidious question back to him: Is it “okay” to pay taxes to the (occupying) Romans? There can be no doubt that they asked him this question in or-der to get him into trouble. If he responded that it was “okay” (or even one’s duty) to pay such taxes, then he’d immediately lose favor with the Jewish populace that deeply resented paying taxes to arguably support their own occupation. But if he declared that it was wrong to pay such a tax, then someone, perhaps even one of those who posed him the question, would quietly denounce him to the Roman authorities afterwards and the Romans themselves would “take care of him.” What to do? Well Jesus’ response: “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what belongs to God” has been remembered ever since as perhaps the first articulation of the concepts of “Separation of Church and State” and even of the “Freedom of Conscience” (defending the proposition that no human authority has the right to con-trol _every aspect_ of another person, that some aspects of our being really belong only to God). That said, what interests me this time as I reflect on this incident is the context in which the religious authorities posed this question to Jesus: They were angry at Jesus and hence gave him a question which they knew would threaten him with all kinds of trouble. How often do we act similarly: Hurt someone even as we smile and plausibly deny that we’re doing anybody anything wrong? Even if we’re angry with someone, let’s try to be more straight-forward than that. - Fr. Dennis

The Little Ones Living God’s Word

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

POWER STRUGGLE

Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

What makes the Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children different from the others? First, there is the intended assembly, which is described as comprised of mostly children of school age. There are three Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children available to us now in the missal. The first one has a very simple form, easily grasped by even a young child. The second has a great deal of partici-pation by the assembly—repeated sung acclamations. The third has a number of variations that can be tricky for a priest to handle if he hasn’t prepared carefully. All of this work does point to a true treasure of our tradition: children are part of the Sunday assembly, precisely because they are baptized members of Christ’s body. By contrast, the churches of the Reformation tend to look upon children as members in training, and see worship as an adult activity. Sunday school happens downstairs while the adults celebrate Holy Communion upstairs. In a phrase, that’s not Catholic. Children belong to Christ and to the assembly. So, the desire to care for the children in the assembly, to draw them into the prayer, and to adapt our rituals and texts to their needs is deeply Catholic, a true pastoral effort to help draw everyone into the praise of God. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Power struggles occur on every level of society, from the world stage to relationships at work, to our own homes. We struggle for po-sition in the hierarchy of power: Who has power over whom? How do they wield it? What is the source of that power? What is the healthy response? In this Sunday’s Gospel reading the Pharisees engage Jesus in a power struggle over whether Jews should show tribute to Caesar by paying taxes. Jesus’ response puts this and every struggle for power into perspective. In harmony with the words of Isaiah and Paul, Jesus teaches us that God is the ultimate source of all power—the power of earthly rulers, the Pharisees, Jesus, the Church, and the power within ourselves. First Reading — The L said to Cyrus, his anointed, “I am the L , there is no other”. — (Isaiah 45:1, 4-6). Psalm — Give the Lord glory and honor. — (Psalm 96) Gospel — Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s. — (Matthew 22:15-21).

FAITH All I have seen teaches me to trust the Creator for all I have not seen. —Ralph Waldo Emerson GOOD EXAMPLE A good example is the tallest kind of preaching. —African saying PROOF OF LOVE The proof of love is in the works. Where love ex-ists, it works great things. But when it ceases to act, it ceases to exist. —St. Gregory the Great

— (Mateo 22:15-21).

—San Gregorio Magno

Dia de los Muertos Event

Each year several adults as well as children come to the church asking to be welcomed and accepted. We have a team that pro-vides instruction (the RCIA team) but each person needs a Cath-olic friend as a role model, mentor and sponsor. The job is to show what Catholics do and to share why you are Catholic. There is no set number of meetings to attend, just a few Sundays where you are asked to stand up for the person but mostly it is about showing all the different ways we are Catholic to someone else. This year many of the adults expressed that they felt uncomforta-ble at mass. Could you make them comfortable by sitting next to them, showing them how to follow the missal? If you belong to a parish group, could you invite them to join you? It is this kind of example that forms the bonds. Could you commit to making a phone call, text or email weekly to check on someone? This is the care we want to offer to those interested in being Catholic. This is how we grow-one person at a time. If you interested or have questions, please contact Debbie Kamer at 714/871-9290.

YOU CAN HELP OUR PARISH GROW!
