What is it?

The 24 Hour Cultural Survey is an online survey for the public, live during noon 24 October to noon 25 October 2015.

The aim is to receive qualitative and quantitive information about what the arts, heritage and culture mean to people in their everyday lives, and specifically the wide range of activities that people have been involved in during the 24 hour period in question.

It is aimed at residents of the West Midlands – Birmingham and the Black Country, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire and Warwickshire.

Currently there are 22 arts and cultural organisations around the West Midlands region confirmed as partners, with many more who have agreed to promote the survey to their audiences, participants and other networks.

What is the point?

Data received will be analysed and turned into an emailable document which all partners can use for lobbying and media work.

There will also be a media and marketing campaign around the survey itself, to act as a profile raiser of the quality of cultural life in the region.

The survey has been commissioned by the West Midlands What Next? group, an informal network of arts organisations concerned with securing the future of the arts and demonstrating its worth to opinion formers and decision makers.

What questions will be asked?

We are developing the questions in the survey with advice from the RSC’s audience insight team. Questions will be both qualitative and quantitive, including such things as:

What cultural activity have you taken part in / attended Involved as….audience/participant/volunteer/performer/artist Reasons for taking part Why arts, culture and heritage matter to you Brief demographic indicators (postcode, age, sex and so on)

How will it be branded? How will it work?

The survey is called “24 hour cultural survey”.

A branding exercise is currently in place – we envisage that the survey will be branded along the lines of ‘24 hours of culture’.

The survey will sit on its own website, www.24hourculture.co.uk

How will the survey be promoted?

There are three avenues for promotion:

1. Arts organisations’ own marketing: We expect organisations around the region to actively promote the survey to their audiences and networks using their websites, social media and in-venue promotion.

2. What’s On media group – media partner: What’s On media group have agreed to be our media partner. They will host the survey on its

own domain, create visual branding for use on our websites and social media etc, plus will provide editorial and advertising in What’s On magazine and on their social media / e-newsletters.

3. Additional media coverage: There will also be a wider press campaign – for example, BBC regional radio / TV plus print titles will be approached for coverage.

I want to get involved. What does my organisation need to do?

In August 2014 we will provide full details of how you can support the 24 Hour Cultural Survey.

It will mostly be a case of posting the survey link and logo to your websites and encouraging sign up through newsletters, Facebook, Twitter and any in-venue support that you can offer.

I have strong opinions now…Do share them. We are in the early stages of planning so any contributions are helpful at this stage.
