Principal’s News Dear Parents and Friends of Sacred Heart,

“The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The

superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”

(William Arthur Ward)

This Friday marks International or World Teachers Day. Each of us

harbours many memories of our teachers from our school days,

some pleasant and some maybe not so pleasant – such is life! I

believe that Mr Ward, quoted above, was pretty much on the

money with his observation that the mark of a great teacher is to

be found in one’s capacity to inspire their students. In the lead-up

to this day I encourage you to speak to your children about the

positive qualities that their teachers bring to school each day to

nurture and educate those in their classes.

Sydney Kings Visit Thursday 2.00 pm: This promises to be a whole

lot of fun as some of our students take on the Sydney Kings for a

fun game on our own home turf (well, painted asphalt actually). I

have been in contact with the Mosman Daily and they will be

sending a photographer along and I will be speaking with the

education editor directly after the game, spreading the good news.

(Please see Sacred Heart Special Ticket Offer Flyer at the end of

this newsletter)

All Saints Day Mass this Friday at 9.15 am: This will be a whole

school mass as we gather to celebrate this significant feast day in

the church’s liturgical calendar. The children will be wearing little

shields, bearing the name of their chosen saint and teachers will

be focusing their RE teaching on the qualities of saints – those

people who do ordinary things extraordinarily well.

Short School Satisfaction Survey: As part of the reporting

requirement for the Federally mandated Annual School Report to

the community, all schools need to report to their parent

communities on the level of student, staff and parent satisfaction

with the school. Accordingly, a short survey will be emailed to all

families next week. This is a fairly straightforward exercise

whereby we ‘test the temperature’ of the water, so to speak. We

will be using the Google Forms app to deploy the survey and once

we have the results of the survey I will communicate these via a

forthcoming edition of HeartBeat before the end of this year.

Next year, 2015, our school will be engaging in the Sydney CEO

‘Cyclic Review’ process where we stop and take stock of our

learning journey over the past four years at Sacred Heart and plan

future directions. As part of the Cyclic Review process all parents

will be given the opportunity to complete a more lengthy and

detailed survey.

School Planning for 2015: We are now well underway with our

planning for 2015 and in next week’s HeartBeat I will be providing

detailed information around how all of this is coming together.

Watch this space………

NAPLAN RESULTS 2014

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy

(NAPLAN) is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and

9. NAPLAN assessment results provide valuable information about

student achievements in literacy and numeracy. At Sacred Heart

we analyse these results in order to highlight our strengths,

determine areas where we can improve significantly, support

learning and teaching programs and develop goals and planning

strategies to boost overall performance.

The tables below show the percentages of students who achieved

particular skill bands in numeracy and aspects of literacy. The

school results shown are compared to students nationally.

Literacy is reported in four content strands or aspects: Reading,

Writing, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation. Numeracy is

reported as a single content strand.

The third table allows us to analyse the performance of our

previous Year 5 cohort, now students in a number of local high

schools, in terms of their performance in this year’s Year 7 NAPLAN

test. The Year 7 NAPLAN test measures the learning gain in

literacy and numeracy from seven terms of teaching and learning

at Sacred Heart and one term of teaching and learning in the

secondary context. Learning gain can therefore be mostly

attributed to teaching and learning at Sacred Heart. Analysis of this

new data may therefore be used as an indicator of the

effectiveness of our Years 5 and 6 teaching at Sacred Heart.

As part of our continuing efforts to become an increasingly ‘data

informed’ school, all teaching staff will be engaging in ongoing

professional learning this term and into 2015, using the rich data

that NAPLAN gives us the opportunity to use. One of the Key

Goals in next year’s Annual Improvement Plan is based upon how

we use data to drive improvements in learning and teaching:

Goal 4: By end of Term 4 2015 at Sacred Heart we have in place

highly effective approaches for gathering, analysing and

interpreting data so that student learning needs and potential are

more accurately identified and student progress is more effectively

monitored.

Pantene Beautiful Lengths – Alyssa from Yr 2 In March this year Miss Maclarn came back to school without all of

her hair. My sister Tully in Yr 1 came home and told us the story

about why Miss Maclarn cut all her hair off. Tully said that Miss

Maclarn had donated her hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths who

make wigs for people with Cancer that lose their hair. Miss

Maclarn taught a girl at another school last year in Year 4 that was

sadly diagnosed with a cancer in her leg just before Christmas.

When I got my hair cut last week I decided after talking to my

mum that I would also donate my hair to Pantene Beautiful

Lengths. I am very proud that I have been able to give my beautiful

long hair to this charity and not have it thrown in the bin. If you

are interested in donating look it up at:

Exemption from Attendance at School Some important amendments to the Education Act 1990 have

resulted in significant changes and procedures governing school

attendance. Parents now wishing to exempt children from the

legal requirement to attend school for any length of time, must

apply to the Principal for an exemption. The Principal will

consider the application and decide whether to grant a ‘Certificate

of Exemption from Attendance at School.’ The Application for

Exemption from Attendance at School Forms are available from

the school office.

Anaphylaxis & Food Allergies We have several children in our school who are severely allergic to

various varieties of nuts and certain foods. Their allergies are

actually life threatening, so we ask all parents to refrain from

sending their children to school with the following foods: nuts,

peanut butter sandwiches or dippers, nutella sandwiches or

dippers, muesli bars with nuts or nut-based products in them,

cakes or chocolate bars with whole or partial nuts in or on them,

satay flavoured noodles, meat or other products, chocolate coated

nuts, chocolate bars coated in or containing nuts (eg. Snickers or

Picnics). Please tell your child not to swap or trade their food with

others. Please also be mindful when sending in treats for your

child’s birthday. We prefer water iceblocks only. Many

sunscreens and lip balms contain certain nut oils which can also be

harmful to anaphylactic children.

Whole Day Absentees As the attendance rolls are now electronic it is essential that if you

are late you or your child MUST sign in at the office before going

to the classroom. If you arrive after the starting time of 8.40am

they will be marked absent unless signed in at the office.
