A PLACE AT THE TABLE One Church's Journey to Make a Space For All Children

Carrie Barton

Then Jesus called for the children and said to the disciples, 'Let the children come to me.

Don't stop them! For the Kingdom of God be-longs to those who are like these children.'

Luke 18:16

Did Jesus really mean ALL the children? Of course he did. Sadly, oftentimes children with Special Needs (in many instances, the most vul-nerable and in need) are not truly welcome in Christ's church. They can be noisy, messy, and scary to some.

Jesus tells us we ALL have a place at the com-munion table. Should it not be our job to make sure there is room for everyone?! At the table. In the church. Serving Special Needs families has been such a tremendous blessing for Harvest Church. For the families...for the volunteers. We'd love to share our journey; how we started the ministry and how it has grown so beautifully with God's blessing.

We are not done yet. As we grow, we'd love to help you potentially begin your own journey.

Carrie Barton began her teaching career in ear-ly as a first grade teacher. She became in-terested in working with children who have spe-cial needs served as a Behavior Therapist.

In she earned her certification as a BCaBA Board Certified Associate Behavior Analyst and

currently is working with children on the Autism Spectrum. She also became the Director of Spe-

THE ART OF DE-ESCALATION Troy Kechely (2 Hour Session)

The course is designed to help students develop crit-ical thinking skills while under stress through train-ing scenarios and classroom presentation. Emphasis will be on the core concept of de-escalation and isolation of realistic threats faced by church educators.

Session will cover: x Identifying the stages of escalating behavior and

how to counter themx Verbal Judo: Using words to get resultsx Getting MAD: The importance of Mindset,

Awareness and Distancex Scenario Training: Apply techniques in scenarios

Troy Kechely started teaching self-defense and defensive tactics in 2008 when he founded his com-pany, Mountain Self Defense. His clients included both civilian and law enforcement and covered material ranging from basic self-defense to ad-vanced combative material including: edged weapon defense, firearms retention and disarming, and defensive tactics for law enforcement.

In 2011, Troy became one of 200 instructor trainers for PPCT, one of the world’s largest research based defensive tactics organizations whose material is used by 70% of law enforcement academies in the United States. He now teaches firearms and com-bative courses with former U.S. Navy SEAL, Chris Forrest through, TACTIC (www.tacticmt.com).

Along with teaching self-defense courses, Troy is also a national expert, author and instructor on canine behavior and handling, and a published historical fiction author with two novels, Stranger’s Dance and, soon to be released, Lost Horse Park.

CREATING COURGEOUS TEENS FOR CHRIST

Dave Howe

One of the greatest ways to electrify a church is to have teenagers who are excited, equipped and confident in their walk with the ord. In order for this to happen, teens need to make faith in God their own. This happens when they take steps of faith and see God work through them.

Child Evangelism Fellowship® has a ministry called Christian Youth in Action® that provides that exact opportunity! “We now have teens ready to minis-ter to children in a variety of ways in our church.”

Find out how Christian Youth in Action creates courageous teens and how they can benefit your church!

Dave Howe is married to Kathy and they are cele-brating 37 years of marriage. Dave has 11 years of experience being a Pastor. The last twelve years Dave has worked for Child Evangelism Fellow-ship® (CEF®). He worked at CEF International Headquarters for 9 years before moving to Mon-tana in April of 2016 to become the State Director for CEF® of Montana.

Dave believes God has given a strategic plan called Vision 2020 to reach 10,000 children with the gospel by the end of the year 2020. Teenagers will play a vital role in that!

BRINGING STORIES TO LIFE Ann Ward-Turner

A Storytelling Method: Simple, Powerful, Inspiring

Storytelling is a predominate method used in teaching children God's Word, and in fact much of the Bible is written in narrative form. A well-told story has the power to capture the imagination, bring about conviction, correct an attitude and affect heart change. Yet sometimes we, as teach-ers, are intimidated wondering how we can com-pete in our media saturated society. Great mas-ters of teaching, including the Lord Jesus, have obtained profound results from the use of the story. It's an age-old tool nearly everyone can use effectively. In this session teachers of all ages will put knowledge, imagination, eyes, voice, hands, heart and God's love all together to sharpen skills and bring stories to life for the glory of God.

Ann Ward-Turner has loved her ministry to chil-dren for almost forty years. Her B.A. is in Chris-tian Education and most of her teaching experi-ence has been within the church. Ann is presently teaching a course at Montana Bible College, Teaching Children, with the hope of inspiring a new generation of committed Bible teachers.

GODLY PLAY IN ACTION Jenny Cade

(2 Hour Session)

The experience of God is one of mystery, awe, and wonder. Young Children and Worship/Godly Play is carefully designed to provide such a wor-ship experience for children. This unique program uses a sensorimotor style of storytelling as a pri-mary means for encountering God, so God is expe-rienced, not just learned about. It gives the chil-dren appropriate freedom, so they can respond to God’s word through continued use of hands-on story materials, or responding through art. It teaches young children how and why we worship God the way we do.

The first hour will cover the program in depth (origins, founders, philosophy, format, materials etc) and the second hour will be a walk through of a Godly play session. So for those who attended last year… you may just attend to the second half of the session to see it in action. We will have time for questions and for giving people an opportunity to work with some of the stories.

Jenny Cade is a first grade teacher in Bozeman and has a heart for serving children in the church body. She attended Seattle Pacific University and majored in Elementary Education and Educational Ministry. During her time at SPU, she was intro-duced to Godly Play and learned the ins and outs of implementing this program. She recently intro-duced this program to her current church, Trinity Presbyterian church here in Bozeman.

Learn more about Godly Play at: www.godlyplayfoundation.org

Since this is a two hour session, choose only 2 additional sessions to attend.

THE THREAT OF WORSHIP Speaking God’s truth into a dark hole

that desperatel needs it Bruce Gore

Satan's domains are not threatened by the plat-forms of political parties, by the promulgations of legislatures, or by the decision of courts. His gates reel, however, when jolted by the seismic shock of the people of God joining in His worship and pro-claiming His truth. Every page of history brims with astonishing examples of how a people with no earthly weapons or political power have dis-mantled entrenched personal and institutional wickedness, fueling dramatic transformations of seemingly impossible conditions to the glory of King Jesus. This video session highlights the aston-ishing impact of John Wesley on England in the late 1700s.

Bruce Gore retired from the faculty of the Oaks Classical Christian Academy in 2013, after serving for twelve years as a teacher of many subjects. He graduated from Whitworth University in 1972, and took a position on the faculty of Inland Empire School of the Bible (now, Moody Northwest). Bruce earned an M.A. in history from E. Washing-ton University 1979 and graduated from Gonzaga University School of Law. Bruce maintained a pri-vate practice until he accepted a position at the Oaks. Bruce served 30 yrs. as adjunct faculty of Whitworth College and Gonzaga University. Bruce’s textbook, Historical Context of the Bible, is a survey of biblical and ancient history.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TEACHING WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

Jim Carlson

How do human teachers cooperate with the divine Holy Spirit in their teaching responsibili-ties? What is the role of the Holy Spirit in teach-ing and what does He do that teachers cannot do? What is expected of teachers for which they will be held responsible? What does effective teaching and learning involve and how can a teacher be more spiritually effective when he/she becomes an instrument in the hands of the Spirit? Are there ways to know that the Spirit of God is at work in our lives as teachers and also in the lives of those we teach?

Jim Carlson has a Master of Theology from Western Seminary in Portland, Oregon. In the 25 years prior to becoming president of Montana Bible College in 2009, Jim was pastor of Lone Rock Bible Church in Montana’s Bitterroot Val-ley, executive director of the Rocky Mountain Bible Mission, and pastor of Community Bible Church of Fort Benton, Montana and the Win-ifred (Montana) Community Bible Church. Since 1990, Jim has also taught various courses as a modular instructor at Montana Wilderness School of the Bible near Augusta.
