THE CITY OF Brotherly Love will hostthe 244th American Chemical Society Na-tional Meeting at the Pennsylvania Con-vention Center. Symposia suppor ting themeetings multidisciplinary theme, Mate-rials for Health & Medicine, are organizedby thematic pr ogram chair Xinqiao Jia,an associate professor of materials sci-ence and engineering at the University ofDelaware.

ACS President Bassam Z. Shakhashiriwill host 30 technical divisions and sevencommittees in original programming over790 half-day oral sessions and 118 postersessions that include Sci-Mix. More than8,500 papers will be presented at themeeting.

In addition to supporting the meetingtheme, Shakhashiri will continue to en-dorse his presidential agenda, AdvancingChemistry & Communicating Chemistry.On Monday, The Work of the InnocenceProject will address how forensic scienceplays a tragic role in innocent peoples con-victions and in some cases death, and onTuesday, Communicating ControversialScience will honor Rudy M. Baum, who is

retiring from C&EN as editor-in-chief.The International Lounge is a new fea-ture that will serve to host internationalguests. When youre in the convention cen-ter, drop by and meet ACS members fromoutside the U.S.

As usual, many education-focusedprograms for high school teachers, under-graduate and graduate students, postdocs,and chemical professionals who want toexpand options and manage their careersare being offered. On Sunday night, a Dou-

ble Feature Featurewill take place as part othe education programfeaturing two science-themed films.

Throughout the

meeting, a range of professional developmentcourses are available;ACS Short Courseshave a separate registration and fee. And for jobseekers and employersthe ACS Career Faironce again will provideopportunities for actuainterviews (both on-sitand online), one-on-one career assistance,and professional de-

ALL ATTENDEES, including speakers and

poster presenters, must register for themeeting in order to participate in the tech-nical sessions. Hotels do not have individual reserva-tions or credit card guarantees yet.
