When I’m not editing 247 this month, I intend to spend as much time as possible on the glorious beaches of Devon and Cornwall. I’m sure you agree that we’re really truly lucky to live in such a beautiful region and not have to make an epic journey every time we want to feel the sand between

our toes. With this mind, the July issue of 247 is a beach special – we bring you beach fashion (page 15), swimwear for Retail Therapy (page 14), we shoot the fashionable folk on Falmouth’s Gyllyngvase beach for Style Hunter (page 18) and interview local boardbording legend, Rob Barber, for our new action spor ts section (page 21). Our food page gets a beach make-over with a fishy theme (page 19). Our cover star, Fatboy Slim, is headed for Newquay’s beaches soon, when he plays Relentless Boardmasters next month, read our funny interview on page 8. Phew! Lindy lives in the fishing village of Polperro, Cornwall and aspires to become a freelance illustrator, illustrating a range of genres including children’s books, greeting cards, editorials and surface pattern. “I get a lot of my inspiration from sitting in my garden studying the plants and animals that live there and walking the coastal path on a sunny day - that gets my creative juices flowing,” says Lindy who also finds 60’s and 70’s illustrations, pattern and furniture design inspiring, along with Scandinavian design. dBs Music moves in with Cornwall CollegeSpecialist Music Production and Technology course provider dBs Music (formerly Deep Blue Sound) is branching out to offer courses in West Cornwall from September. They will spend £250,000 refurbishing one of Cornwall College’s current buildings to turn it into a custom-built sound engineering and music production studio, which will include industry standard recording studios, live performance rooms, Mac suites, studio pods and a listening lab and lecture theatre. It will be only the sixth Avid Pro School Centre in the UK offering Pro Tools certification. Along with the best industry-standard equipment, the tutors at dBs are themselves industry professionals and between them have worked with the likes of Freestylers, Nicky Blackmarket,

Radiohead, Madonna and All Saints.The new venture will initially offer BTEC Extended Diplomas in Creative Sound Engineering & Music, DJ & Electronic Music Production, and Music Performance, which will be accredited by Cornwall College. As well as facilities for students, dBs Music also offers recording space for musicians, bands and voice over artists and has seen the likes of Joss Stone, Chris Rea and Little Britain pairing David Walliams and Matt Lucas through its doors in Plymouth. You’ve just got back from a gig at the Great Wall of China, are you now planning the rest of the seven wonders? How was it?That’s not a bad idea actually. Such a triumph, it was the first electronic gig they’ve had there and just the thrill of it, you know having the army not close it down, it was like a proper old school rave, two hours outside of Beijing, everything thrown together, like all these things just the fact it happened is amazing.

You’ve been called a musical magpie for finding great samples, are there any tracks you love that you wished you’d found first?Yes. You’re gonna ask me to name one now aren’t you? (Thinks for a while...) I did a tune with Lindy (Layton) and we sampled Billy Cobham, the same week it came out Massive Attack had sampled the same thing, so either I wish ours had come out first or late enough so I could re-do our track.

I remember seeing you at the jazz rooms in Brighton, which is tiny, for Shake Your Wig, do you miss the smaller gigs and the freedom they give you now you do all the stadium ones?I do yes, the stadiums are great but you do need to play the big tunes, but I do lots of after-shows in small clubs, like we did Zouk in Singapore, where I get to flex my musical muscles more.

We got Garry (Norm’s manager) drunk last night and he signed off on you doing Big Brother the DJ edition, what will be your luxury item?I did actually do Big Brother in Brasil, they set up a DJ box in their and I went in and did a set! I got told afterwards that I had broken pretty much every rule of Big Brother. I took in swimming trunks as they had a jacuzzi and a splashpool!

Over the years you’ve covered plenty of different musical genres in your productions and remixes, if there was a law saying you could only do one, what would it be?Dirty acid house

The three biggest influences on my life are you, Otis Redding and Peter Sellers, who are yours?The Clash, Grandmaster Flash and John Peel.

You’ve collaborated with a huge volume of artists over the years, is there anyone you would still like to work with?

Al Green. My people have contacted his but I think his manager told him what a sinner I am.

Could you not find god for a while so you could work with him? I think everyone knows I’m pretty much beyond redemption.

You’ve had some top class videos, what’s your personal favourite?Ya Mama. I think because I’ve not seen it as much, you know Praise you and Weapon of Choice are great but Ya Mama still makes me laugh every time I see it.

You’ve said that when you started DJing you were classed on a level as the glass collectors, how hard were your first few years DJing?It wasn’t hard, it was just a hobby not a career, I was DJing five nights a week and working in a record shop to pay my rent: it was something you did if you were a vinyl junkie.

I’m Plymouths 14th best DJ but Brighton has more competition, who would you be worried about going up against?I’m not sure if Dave Clarke counts as I think he lives in Holland now but for pure DJ skills it would be Carl Cox and Dave Clarke. I’m actually playing against Carl at Glastonbury.

When Rockafeller Skank was a hit you said: “at

least it stops the kids singing Happy Hour outside my window”, if you could choose how to be remembered what would it be?In my head it’s something like a big football team coming out to Right Here Right Now, I don’t know what it is about that song, some kind of sense of occasion but it will probably be my son has this toy hamster. It dances and sings Rockafeller Skank...

My so-called career can be summed up in three words “determination over ability”, what three words some up yours?(Norman laughs) Probably about the same, maybe showmanship over ability. What about showboating over ability? (Norman laughs even more) Yeah go on put that.

You’re playing the Boardmasters Festival in Newquay soon (August 10-14), are you looking forward to it?I am, I haven’t been to that part of the country for a while but when I do everyone is always so appreciative, always a hot reception, it’s like the China gig, when it all comes together, the weather, the people it’s just amazing.

Have you finished your fifth album yet: what can we expect and how does it differ from Headstunts?All the music has been recorded for the fifth album, we are just finishing the vocals. It is hard to say how it differs from Headstunts, as it is only when you have finished an album can you look back and say how it differs from you previous work, but I would say the new album is slightly rougher around the edges than Headstunts. I think it is going to be a great album!

Any new influences or sounds we can look forward to?I think the album is a natural evolution from Headstunts. We are more interested in evolving naturally the way bands used to be allowed to do before the internet. No new sounds in the sense that we have still not incorporated samplers and drum machines, nor are there any contemporary urban R&B influences...

You recorded at Gutterview Recorders in Stockholm, right? It was great! It snowed a lot as it was the depths of winter, but that allowed us to just focus on the music. We had a limited amount of time and a lot to do so it was pretty intense.

We heard you guys all live in different countries – is that right? Sounds like it would make life difficult?Yes, we are scattered all over the globe. It does make being in band difficult but I think trying to exist as a band in this day

and age is tricky anyway. We all live in different countries so that nobody can kidnap us all at the same time. It is all about safety...It sounds safe yet complicated – how did you all meet? Phil and Dolf met at school. I met them around the same time they started the band and Ben and I (Christian Livingstone) had been friends for years.

You’re back on the road again and headed for the mighty South West of England to play Leopallooza! Are you looking forward to it? We are indeed playing live again soon and we are looking forward to playing in Cornwall. We have never been to Leopallooza, or Cornwall, before so it will be all new to us!

Cripes! You’re in for a treat. How do you prepare for a live show?A few warm up exercises. Seriously, playing a show is lie doing an aerobatics work out and you don’t want to pull a muscle!

What kind of a set have you guys got lined up: are you going to rock a bit of your older stuff, or concentrate on the new album?It will be a mix of our entire catalogue. We haven’t had the set-list argument yet so I can’t accurately say what songs will make the cut.

Boasting a distinctive and unique sound, Oxbow Lakes took inspiration from the otherwise known crescent-shaped lake as it fit the ‘swampy and relaxed’ feel of their music perfectly. Since forming in winter of 2009, the laidback lads from Torquay have become something of a huge success. Having earned themselves more than just a popular status, they’ve a handful of opportunities. With a load of gigs lined up and a slot at this year’s LemonFest, Oxbow Lakes have a hell of a lot to look forward to.

Comprising of four music-loving lads, Hugh Reed, Tom Morgan, Dan Harvey and Tom Victorio-Jones all share a common musical interest and collaborate to create their epic, profound sound who express the importance of the quality of the music and instruments. This is one band that has perfected every beat of their drum, every chord in their guitar to such a high-quality that throughout their six and seven minute pieces, it’s impossible to find fault. Writing their own music and with a refined sound of organic electronics, each track builds up with an intensifying, euphoric climax and delivers to audiences every time. Creating a soothing ambience with their well-tuned instruments, their melodic music creates something that little bit different and allows you to float away for six minutes of bliss, returning back to earth in a much calmer state of mind.

really grabs hold of you and hangs on until the end of one track and the beginning of another, putting you in a state of ecstasy as the beats open up and continue to flow. Already familiar with the dynamics of a band, having previously played in ones prior to the birth of Oxbow Lakes, the lads have taken to this style of music like a fish to water. They have taken time to perfect their music and their new-found style has been welcomed with open arms by audiences from all over the country.

With melodic tracks such as The Gymnast, Monaco and OSL, the bands inspirations come from just a handful of artists. With several gigs already under their belt, these talented Torquay lads are eager to get back on stage whenever the opportunity arises. Psyched to be performing on the Big Top dance tent at this year’s LemonFest, the four friendly lads are more likely be found enjoying themselves amongst the roaring crowd than secluding themselves backstage. Their perception of a gig is just a night out with an added bonus of performing.

With an EP coming out this summer, the lads have taken June out to concentrate on writing music. With future ambitions of recording an album, their dynamic, mellow and intense sounds are sure to be as much of a hit as they already are. These four fun-loving lads have mastered this unique sound and want to further themselves onto performing at even bigger venues, with ambitions to tour.

For most people, surfing and working are a bit like juggling while climbing a ladder – it’s hard to do both, and doing one will certainly affect your ability to do the other. Unless you’re smart that is and, like Rob Barber, combine the two in perfect harmony. Rob, 34, was and is one of the top bodyboarders in the country, having started competing when he was 15 and won over 35 titles in a long career, the best a placing as the highest ranked European in the world professional ratings after the 1995 Pipeline in Hawaii.

Rob opened his first surf school, ‘Rob Barber’s Bodyboarding School’, at just 18-years-old, now he’s so much more: part bodyboarding teacher, part magazine editor, part sponsor, part shop owner, and all-round evangelist for the sport he loves so much. And yet even he still finds the time to get his flippers wet, surfing his favourite break at Tolcarne Wedge.

“I still surf every day,” says Rob. “Every day there are waves anyway. It’s so hard juggling work and surfing. But the day I don’t go surfing because I stay at work, that’s the day I’m doing something wrong.” Quite. Apart from editing the super-cool bodyboard mag, ThreeSixty, he set up the Rip Curl English Surfing Federation Surf School, now the biggest in Newquay, aged 20, launched a bodyboard coaching trip business aged 22 and has since opened Coastline Coasteering, the Bodyboard-Depot store and, this year, the brand new Newquay Activity Centre.

Boadyboarding has clearly given him a lot over the years, but he’s certainly paying it back – fighting the good fight in the face of an army of stand-up merchants. “Bodyboarding is definitely the poor relation,” he says. “At its most basic level you do see more holidaymakers on bodyboards, but at the high end it’s got its own scene. “Being such a young industry means there haven’t been the backers like you get in surfing. It’s only really in the last five years that you have seen bodyboarder-owned brands, so they put money back into the sport.”

So why not just surf, what is it with the shark biscuit already? “It’s a question I’ve been asked 1,000 times,” says Rob. Make that 1,001. “I just enjoy being on my bodyboard. Always have, always will. Sure, it’s always been surfing’s poor cousin, but in the last 10 years we’ve been treading lots of new paths. Now you’re getting guys heading to reef-break waves in Western Australia, Chile and off the coast of Ireland. “Seven or eight years ago it was the fastest-growing watersport in the world. At ThreeSixty we have a real avid readership and it’s growing. We’re riding slab waves in literally inches of water. At this end, it’s quite an extreme sport.”

And at the other, it is so accessible, even people from the north can do it. “I think the reason bodyboarding is so popular is that you can just go out and buy a cheap board from one of the seaside shops and start having fun with it pretty much straight away, you get to see the benefits really quick and start catching waves in seconds. It would take you much longer to get to that stage on a stand-up board,” explains Rob. “The next step is to start catching unbroken waves, which quickly develops into something much more different. When you start paddling out and getting in the tubes, surfing some of those reef breaks. You get much quicker gains initially, but at the top end, to master, it’s just as hard as surfing.”

And yet, still the sniffy remarks come from those who prefer standing up to laying down. So what gives? “I don’t take offence at people saying derogatory things about bodyboarding. I do surf as well, but bodyboarding is a sport in its own sense. It’s like saying ‘why don’t you play football?’ if you play rugby. At the end of the day, surfing is all about having fun.

Bon IverBon Iver (Matador)

‘For Emma...’ was a triumph of desolation and despair. That’s why all us melancholy-driven romantics adored it so much. So, with existential heartbreak behind him and indie success all around him, does Bon Iver – friend of the falsetto, Justin Vernon – still have the tools to evoke the, erm, cry-pools? Of course he does. You move on but you don’t forget. ‘Perth’ rumbles forth like a statement of resilience but by the time ‘Minnesota WI’ lays its arpeggio guitars and chunky keys down, you’re already tearfully planning your exile to the mountains. Armed with a coterie of great musicians and a clearer emotional understanding, ‘Bon Iver...’ lifts its head high as well as licks its wounds.

The CoathangersLarceny & Old Lace(Suicide Squeeze)

Riot Grrrl, like punk rock, never dies. It just finds new avenues and ways of doing things a bit differently. Edgily named Atlanta, Georgia quartet, The Coathangers, pick up the mantle left behind by the first wave of no wave and run indignantly through the streets, lobbing curveballs that land somewhere between The Slits and Throwing Muses – there are certainly worse places to find yourself. New single, ‘Hurricane’, is a malevolent Killing Joke-esque strop while the more delicate likes of ‘Go Away’ betray a reflective femininity to temper the radical feminism. ‘Call to Nothing’ swims deeper into the post-punk depths, finding common ground with the eeriness of Swiss fem-punks, Liliput. A worthwhile anti-pop artefact.

Great CynicsDon’t Need Much(Household Name)

You may know this London-based trio as Cynics but the American band of the same name had a strop. So now they’re prefixed with ‘Great’. Touché! Debut album, ‘Don’t Need Much’, is a very fine set of rootsy rock songs that will nestle itself unassumingly into your beloved collection of DIY platters with the added distinction of sounding like none of them. If ‘Nightcaps’ and ‘Dave & Angela’ were divining sticks they may lead you to Alkaline Trio and Billy Bragg, via the Cornershop, but it’s flattery not mimicry. Songwriter Giles Bidder’s sense of individuality and Englishness do more than enough to create a wonderfully homespun dialectic with lyrics that succeed through their simplicity.

Black TuskPassage Through Purgatory(Relapse)

For those who don’t know (ie. most of you) Black Tusk’s music dwells in the hidden part of Southern sludgeville, down in the grease-engulfed gutter amongst the used needles and plague-inducing protozoans. If punk fell straight out of Sabbath’s ass-hole, way before the art-school set put their spin on it, this is how it would have sounded. Praise be. Here we find their debut album reissued with a couple extra slabs of noise, expanded artwork by Baroness’ John Baizley and a new lease of remastered life, which transforms the already towering likes of ‘End Of Days’ into something resembling war. If you relish the idea of chomping on redneck, sonic fireballs for thirty minutes, look no further.

The Chapin SistersTwo (Lake Bottom Records)

In a similar way to First Aid Kit (my favourite album last year), sisters Abigail and Lily are geniuses in the art of disguising their youth. On their second album, they present nine songs that glow with country-folk splendour: subdued and melancholic, with bags of heart and soul. With harmonies and melodic warmth, their mainly acoustic sound is backed with percussion, vibraphone and keyboards. Having a Grammy Award-winning father (Tom Chapin) may well have helped them build on a solid foundation, but the rich sound The Chapin Sisters create is definitely their own. The album includes three songs from their Oh Hear the Wind Blow EP, released earlier this year.

Shonen KnifeFree Time(Damnably)

If Ramones were three Japanese girls, they would have been called Shonen Knife. This is a band that operates in the exact opposite direction of the likes of Chapin Sisters or First Aid Kit. You’d be forgiven in assuming that singer/guitarist, Naoko was barely out of her teens, but she’s actually been fronting Shonen Knife for 30 years! And yet, despite this, her brand of sugary punk-pop never sounded fresher than it does here. All manner of issues are tackled: Economic Crisis, Rock & Roll Cake, Monster Jellyfish and P.Y.O, which is about a pick-your-own farm in Sussex. Upbeat, quirky and fun: that’s what this band does best.

SpindriftClassic Soundtracks

(Xemu Records)

Former members of Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spindrift create what they themselves call “Spaghetti Western psychedelia”. But if you’re not a BJM fan, don’t be put off: this is far superior. Soundtracks could serve as a companion to MGMT’s Congratulations, which saluted psychedelic pop- only this is the dark side. Plenty of instrumental tracks, many of which capture the eeriness of a David Lynch film, and the album title is very appropriate. The demonic Theme From Amboy takes spookiness into slightly comical realms- possibly on purpose. An assortment of ingredients: haunting vocals, slide guitar, sitar, spine-tingling surf guitar and bucketfuls of psychedelic goodness. It’s hard to avoid clichés like “mind-expanding journey”- but there it is.

Grey ReverendOf the Days(Motion Audio)

Having previously sung with Cinematic Orchestra on tour, Grey Reverend now has his debut album released on the band’s label. Making an album that consists entirely of just one guitar and one vocal (apart from a solitary harmonica on one song), is a brave mission. Sure enough, with the Rev’s simplistic interpretations, the songs are strong enough to shine in their own right. And the production allows his single acoustic guitar to fill out every track, so the absence of an overdub isn’t so obvious. But as an album, a few different shades wouldn’t have gone amiss. You can’t help but wonder how much better some of the songs would have sounded with some subtle strings or an extra guitar.

Ras GDown to Earth(Ramp Recordings)

A long time ago, a producer known as Norman Cook made a rhythm track based around the crackle from a dirty vinyl record. Genius. A lot of money and time is spent in music making things sound crisp & clean when sometimes in the words of the aforementioned Norman “It’s the grit that makes the groove”. This is the overwhelming feeling I get from this album, it’s an album of instrumental hip hop that isn’t concerned with perfect sound but with sonic feeling & is so much better for it. Alot of the album tracks are basic loop ideas but done so well, “Hey Baby” is a very addictive example, a few simple soul loops with just the right sprinkle of production. If you mixed Dilla with Scratch Perry & Deadly Avenger, you might get close to this.

The Bandana SplitsMr Sam Presents(Tummy Touch Records)

Jesus, I love this album. Not too much info on this but a new project involving the mountain of talent known as Dawn Landes. If you are not aware of her, imagine Feist/Regina Spektor/Nerina Pallot but 325 times better. This is a retro sounding album that harks back to the kind of studio 2 sound but with brilliant melodies, a happy sunny album that sounds great in summer but has so much appeal that even on a dark rainy night in Plymouth makes me feel like I’m on the beach with a bbq playing frisbee with my nearest and dearest. Imagine the Ronettes playing back up to Elvis in one of his cheesier films but the kind of lost tracks Tarantino would find and attach to a knowingly cool moment from a rehashed foreign film

Sole and the Skyrider Band Hello Cruel World(Equinox Records)

Over my shoulder I hear Time to wake up son. That jiggy kiddy shit you love was good for a while but now you want something with more substance and meaning maybe. What are you doing listening to these MC’s? When you are good, and you know you are good, you don’t rush, you know your trade, you nod your head to a solid beat, you drop that flow like you got all the time in world and you make sure they can hear every word cos what you are saying is worth hearing. Tim Holland has left Anticon. This is where he is now and it’s worth joining him.

EmalkayEclipse(Dub Police Records)

At last years Bestival pretty much every dubstep DJ dropped “When I Look At You” in their sets and each time the place went nuts. Question is the bar has been set high now for dubstep albums, does Emalkay stand up? Does it have a ragga influenced track, yep, a whispy female vocal crossover track, yep, bring out a name from yesteryear to collaborate, yep Baby D, double tick on that one, a track with the double timed drums, yep. So far so all in place, all that remains is whether all that said the tracks sound as good in a club as they do from someone iPod? Double yep. Whilst maybe not Radio One A listed this guy is definitely set for big things. I recommend if you like your dubstep and already have the usual suspects albums then this is one for you, if you think the big names have sold out and crossed over then maybe Emalkay is here to walk that fine line between the two.

I love Holland! Not only are they the nation that has brought some of the highest quality productions to our shores, but they definitely know how to throw the best parties as well. The pristine production value is evident on Analogue Is Dead, ran by Thilo + Evanti. While I only have one remix of this track from newcomers ‘Arctic Origin’ to hand, (provided by Australia’s ‘The Engineer’), it’s a groovy techno and hard trance fusion that is perfect from switching to one genre to the other. What I really admire is how this breaks boundaries yet stays pumping throughout, and although it isn’t the best release from the label, it still is more than worthy of a play.

Wragg + Log One vs Iain Crosswww.wraggandlogone.com

By the time you read this, the Taunton based duo of Wragg + Log:One will have played at the prestigious Defqon 1 Festival in Holland (alongside yours truly!), and to be fair they have had remarkable success during the past few years. Here they have teamed up with Country Club legend (and owner of Audio:tech), Iain Cross, to deliver ‘Run For Cover’ and this has it all. Rather eerie, haunting synth work and sheer amounts of energy make this somewhat special, combined with their trademark driving kick and bass sounds, and a sinister vocal combined within. This is definitely one for the middle of your harder sets to really cause some damage when played!

Looe isn’t exactly the place where you would expect one of the most promising hard trance labels in the UK to reside, but this quaint little seaside town is home to the magnificent Digitally Infected imprint. (OK, to be fair it is also home to the quality ‘Virus Audio’ as well). Owned by local DJ + producer legend Busho, Opulence is release two on the imprint from Australia’s DJ Husband who manages to defy genres with his fusion of hard trance and techno. The winning mix of this package comes from Plymouth’s very own Side E-Fect who manages to turn in a harder, relentless, European styled reworking which has tore the roof off all over Europe for me when dropped!

Mike Steventon vs Tonewww.k405artists.com

Mike Steventon vs Tone’s Get Up [K405] is one that certainly has raised a few eyebrows when I have dropped it! As my penultimate track at a gig in Slovenia in May and also a recent playing in Northern Ireland, this was one of the stand out tracks of the set. Cleverly sampling ‘So Get Up’ from ‘Underground Sound Of Lisbon’, this hardstyle track is home-grown, with it being released on Plymouth based K405, (ran by Kidd Kaos), and produced by fellow Plymouthian Mike Steventon. Mike was aided in this production by Tone (winner of the 2010 Hard Dance Awards best newcomer), and this track takes influence from the Dutch and Italian hard style sound and fuses the two together ingeniously with a very powerful break.

No Humans No! notwithstanding, Plymouth hasn’t really had its fair share of DIY anarcho-punk gangs eating up prejudices and spitting them back in our faces with tortured zeal. Step forward FTO, who have been doling out their righteous diatribes for some time now, underpinned by the kind of rabid music that leaves you with two choices: take sides or fuck off. I’m happy to take sides. Whether the brain-scrambling ‘Sexually Transmitted Indigestion’ or the venomous ‘Irony Is The Scene’ will convert fence-sitters is a moot point but I shouldn’t think FTO are fussed. If it was populist acclaim they were after they’d sound like All Time Low. Then I really would have to fuck off.

Gorgeous Bully is one Thomas Crang: Plymouth resident and purveyor of wilfully lo-fi indie-thrum. The three songs here are brief sonic forays into his time-warped soul, and are garnished with more instrumentation than previous acoustic-orientated offerings, much to their credit. Awash with melodic ingenuity and distorted vocals, lead track ‘I Think’ is a gentle, Cure-like paean; the Eastern lilt of ‘Cast’ bobbles in the lake between Britpop and The Beatles, with a welcome drift towards the latter; while pick of the bunch, ‘Bear In Chains’, revisits the motorik, post-punk throb of Joy Division et al. A ferociously DIY, one-man operation with decent ideas in tow. Now that is a rarity. Cheers!

Scout Killers give off the impression that they mean serious business which, ironically, makes them sound a bit pastiche. The Bath mood-rockers veer between punchy alt rock (‘No Reason’) and epic-lite crooning (‘Shut Your Eyes’) but, infuriatingly, their Soundcloud songs are faded out after 90 seconds or so. Do these tiny bands think we’re all queuing up to download their stuff and leak it online? Do they think their songs are so precious that there’s no way we should be able to hear them in their entirety without paying a few pennies for the privilege? Get real chaps and put the full songs up. In the meantime I’ll give them a taste of their own medicine

Exeter’s The Dirty Grunts initially hooked me on two points: that moniker and the title of their first song, ‘Ball Of Shit’. The gruelling sonic concoction that followed only served to pull me in further. Part Crucifucks lunacy, part Gang Of Four anti-melody, part Future Of The Left revelry, the band consciously fall between all stylistic punk stools and probably relish the opportunity to wallow in the spilt beer and urine-soaked footprints below. Other songs like ‘Fuck Facebook’ and ‘Muppet’ are delivered with an artful naivety – if such a thing exists – with the vocalist contemptuously snarling his misanthropic manifesto over every tortured riff. For fans of being really pissed off.

Ever come across an emo ska band? You have now. While the cartoon album cover, parping, offbeat tunes and frivolous name suggest a chirpiness to rival Madness or Squeeze, Clumsy are anything but. Lyrics switch between self flagellation (all balls and chains and foolish pride) and berating the self flagellating (Who cares about the trivial little things you do?). It’s all interrupted by a good old dose of preaching platitudes (You cannot borrow what you cannot afford?, It’s a foolish man who builds his life upon the thing you could do without? and so on). A little too much like an over-earnest Radiohead fan has started writing lyrics for UB40.

If you’re going to do dark, brooding and intense, you might as well go the whole hog. Bristol’s The St. Pierre Snake Invasion do just that. Even their name is enough to strike fear into your very bones. Taking their moniker from an apocalyptic disaster straight out of a Samuel L. Jackson film, TSPSI’s songs are one part punk, two parts grunge: all parts great. Their self released EP, Flesh, writhes in sinister boogie-man lyrics, Jekyll and Hyde vocals and grainy, distorted guitars. But there’s humour inthere too with references to the Addams family and jibes at bands whose front men wear trilbies. Creepy, fun and brilliant. I’ll just get my moshing boots out.

As you read this it is, most likely, raining. Such is the British weather. To introduce a bit of sunshine to your day (or accompany it should a meteorological miracle have occurred) you could do far worse than listen to Land of the Giants. This Devonian indie-ska act sport a rather splendid trombone among the usual line up of guitars, vocals and drums. It’s proper, summery stuff with cheeky sounding songs like the Paulo Nutini-ish Hide the Sausage. At times a reggae themed Smiths tribute (see Love Me If You Dare), LOTG aren’t scared to experiment. The sprawling, world-weary Golden more than demonstrates this. Funky, offbeat stuff; by turns very deep and incredibly shallow.

Who says chill out music has to be electronically generated? The makers of Ministry of Sound compilations probably. Nevertheless, here to prove them wrong is Nick Rivera whose soothing EP features parping brass, mesmerising cellos and gentle guitars. His Happy Song is a Happy Song EP is a set of relaxing yet thoroughly imaginative tunes, mostly instrumental, all entirely compelling. There’s a meandering sense of freedom to the tracks last heard coming from Alfie or Beirut. Pieces like Renee Luise, Horn Y Orgy and the record’s title track lull the listener into a pool ofmusical bliss. Complex yet also simple, experimental but never pretentious, this willleave you gasping for more.

I was seduced by the Falmouth Bay Pacific Oysters, au natural, with a shallot and champagne vinaigrette, but perhaps the seared Falmouth Bay Scallops with Tan-doori spices and caramelised parmesan are more your thing? Or the Cornish Gevrik goats cheese, beetroot, organic mixed leaf salad, honey and almonds? Get excited, that’s just to start. The Specials board is bursting with local and organic produce, and Dover Sole sits quite happily on the menu opposite the 42 Day Dry Aged Hereford Rib-Eye Steak. There is a delicious selection of home-made desserts, and an extensive wine list. Dishes are presented in a beautiful and thoughtful fashion without being fussy. Service is attentive. Actually it’s both – and all the more special for it: Thee food is universally excellent and none too pricey. The emphasis is on fresh, local seafood, mostly landed just along the coast in Brixham. Starters such as sprat fillets, Bigbury Bay oysters and South Devon crab are the perfect foil for mains includ-ing monkfish fillets in breadcrumbs, local mackerel or the king of the chippy, cod in batter, ethically sourced from the Barents Sea so you can sleep at night.You get nice cutlery to eat your fish from cardboard trays, crisp linen napkins to shield you from the tomato ketchup you are encouraged to use. A glance at the clientele reflects the theme: there are yachty types, couples on holiday, and families with kids feverishly scribbling on the paper placemats, many of which cover the walls and ceilings with toddler art.The Staff are impeccably friendly and there’s a great wine list. The classy décor may put money savers off grabbing a bite to eat, however, prices are very reasonable for the lavish dishes on offer. Lunchtime mains are priced from 8 to 13 pounds and evening meals are only slightly higher. The restaurant’s atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed, with comfy seating and an every seafood restaurant’s must have – lobster tanks; where you can choose which lucky character will be dining with you. The friendly and attentive staff ensure dining at Indaba is a highly enjoyable affair. I sampled the seared scallops and king prawns sautéed in butter and served on bok choi with a chilli and mango salsa. The scallops and prawns were cooked perfectly and the accompani-ments gave the dish a zingy and refreshing flavour without overpowering the flavoursome fish. I also tried the Pollock and chorizo fishcake, served with a delightful chilli jam, which was tasty, yet the cake didn’t have enough smoky paprika tones that I expect from the Spanish delicacy.Open Monday to Saturday lunch is served from 12 – 2.30pm, Dinner from 5.45pm (5.45 to 6.45pm features a pre-theatre menu deal).Ben Perks

BIGBURY The Oyster Shack Milburn Orchard Farm, Stakes Hill, Bigbury, Devon, TQ7 4BE / 01548 810876 There aren’t many restaurants that can boast a lower food mileage than that of The Oyster Shack in Bigbury, plucking the oysters the shack so proudly names itself after from the River Avon, not more than 500 metres from the front door. A beautiful range of local fish including hand dived scallops and grilled sea bass adorn the menu, all cooked with the precision and simplicity that such fresh produce deserves. The oysters, served either au naturel (raw, with just the tiniest dribble of red wine vinegar), baked with parmesan and garlic, chorizo and cori-ander or lime, peppers and bacon, these little beauties are worth the trip on their own. Attention to even the tiniest details set this restaurant apart. The fries, served in a mini basket, are delicious and make the perfect partner to the excellent Shack Moules, which come in a creamy, bacon leek and cider sauce, with home baked bread. Local wines, speciality cocktails and a selection of beers finish off the menu and knowledgeable, friendly staff all serve to make the Oyster Shack a res-taurant that you should definitely try out. Abeckaser 2010/US/89 minFresh from his Oscar bothering performance in The Social Network, Jesse Eisenberg turns his rather odd on-screen persona to this crime drama. He plays a Jewish youth from a highly religious community who while exploring his cultural and religious links with Israel, rebels against his family and values by becoming an Ecstasy dealer to help his new found friends in the Israeli freedom movement. This interesting story needs to be sensitively handled in order to touch hearts strings as well as consumers pockets.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER (TBC) Released: 29 JulyDir: Joe Johnston Starring: Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving and Stanley Tucci 2011/US/TBCAnother balls-to-the-wall comic book adaption that stays preposterously close to the original source material. Its set during the Second World War and Hitler is apparently experimenting with bionic warfare and advanced weaponry, which is affecting the outcome of the war. So the American’s kick start their own nuclear fuelled programme and turn military wash-out Steve Rogers into Captain America. Expect plenty of jingoistic Nazi- bashing and some great

action scenes but don’t expect the story to make sense, or for it to be historically accurate.

CARS 2 (TBC)

Released: 22 JulyDir: John Lasseter, Brad Lewis Starring: Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy and Michael Caine 2011/US/TBCThis is probably the sequel nobody wanted to be made, as the reception to the first film was nothing short of negative. But director John Lasseter certainly has the comedic talent to turn this franchise around. In this instalment racing car Lightning McQueen and his pal Mater go beyond the American Indy Car championship and across the Atlantic to compete in the World Grand Prix race. Their road trip gets complicated as they somehow they get involved in an espionage conspiracy. Should be fun and plus this time it’s all in 3D.

Released: 29 July Dir: Frank Coraci Starring: Kevin James, Rosario Dawson and Leslie Bibb 2011/US/TBCIn this silly summer comedy the lovable Kevin James plays zookeeper Griffin, who in a nice twist on the Doctor Doolittle format, gets advice from his animals on his love life. They help him gain the attention of the shapely Rosario Dawson who plays Kate whose animal attraction

leads our zookeeper to take dating advice from a Gorilla. Not the most sensitive of lovers!

Released: 31 July Dir: Wyndham Price Stars: Joshua Richards 2011/WALES/TBCThis biopic picks up where The Damned United and Nowhere Boy left off by focusing on a specific public figure in a tight frame. In this case it’s a young Richard Burton, who goes from a hard-as-nails Welsh Valleys upbringing to acting first on the stage and then to the glamour and excess of Hollywood. This challenging and emotional drama will highlight a dearly missed actor’s life in way not seen before.

HORRIBLE BOSSES (TBC) Released: 22 July Dir: Seth Gordon Starring: Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis 2011/US/TBCThis is film tailor made for anyone who has had to deal with a tyrannical boss, or just a boss they don’t like (Ed. Watch out!). In this comedy Nick (Bateman), Dale (Day) and Curt (Sudeikis) all decide that their working lives would be made much easier if they all kill their managers, so they form a pact to kill each others troublesome tyrants. This could be a bit of a sleeper hit with the viewing public crying out for more comedy in the same vein as The Office.

HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 2 (TBC) Released: 15 July Director: David Yates Starring: Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint 2011/US/TBCThis summer’s conclusion to the seven-strong Harry Potter franchise is sure to be one of the blockbuster season’s biggest hits. Picking up from where Deathly Hallows Part 1 left off we get too see Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) face off against the evil Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). They must find the remaining three horcruxes, which are responsible for making Voldermort immortal. The previously youthful cast are starting to look so old they should have finished studying at the University of Hogwarts, but this should still be an effects packed extravaganza with the magic of the best instalments of this popular series. It also features brilliant performances by Helena Bonham Carter (as Bellatrix Lestrange), Gary Oldman (Sirius Black) and Alan Rickman (Severius Snape).

Instrumental post-rock is all the rage but if you put a crooning, self-referential dandy in front of MAYBESHEWILL they’d sound like any archetypal indie mood-rock band, albeit with a whisper of psychedelic ambition (White Rabbit, Plymouth, 12th May). Mind you, the last song was pretty thrilling: an impassioned dirge with Howard Beale’s famous on-air rant from Network layered tastefully over the top. Like And So I Watch You From Afar, YOU SLUT!’s modus operandi seems to be: why weave two or three riffs/tempos into a song when you can completely change course every fifteen seconds? Sure, it leaves you playing catch-up for half hour but it’s well worth the brainpower.

Lincoln’s Crash Doubt Fest exceeded expectations (The Showroom, 14-15th May). We arrived on the Saturday in time for KELLY KEMP’s crafted country croon, followed by the reliable punk blast of Leeds bruisers, DAUNTLESS ELITE, while ABOVE THEM’s anthemic, earnest rock’n’roll – a triumph of style and substance – had all the hallmarks of greatness. And what a voice! The next day, while the metalcore gruntniks (LIFERUINER et al) and emo metallers (DEAF HAVANA et al) were upstairs playing to nice haircuts, the homegrown punk frat was celebrating its resurgence with sweaty abandon, from PACER’s old school nuggets, to CYNICS’ gentle rock groove, to the dog-eared shoutalongs of LEAGUES APART. While the arrival of CALVINBALL, BANGERS and APOLOGIES I HAVE NONE was greeted with nothing short of euphoria. American heavyweights, IRON CHIC, rounded things off with typically mid-paced gruffness – nothing you haven’t heard a thousand times before but still chockfull of boss tuneage. Other highlights: Dutch quartet, SWEET EMPIRE’s bassist playing with a broken clavicle, the strangely alluring crypto-folk world of CHANGING HORSES and OLIVER JOHN WARD’s rabid acoustic outpourings.

Nestled among the Plympton greenery, Volksfest was an enjoyably old-school jamboree with a host of regional performers padding out the smattering of touring bands (Newnham Park, Plymouth, 27-28th May). In a nut-shell: MAD DOG MCREA folk rocked to an ever-loving throng; MORIARTY made like White Stripes with dapper suits and amusingly child-unfriendly quips; female trio, SOUND OF THE SIRENS, hit some sweet harmonies but relied on well-worn covers for the big cheers; DAN STEER proffered polished indie pop fare; SPREE made like The Maccabees with a more parochial air; THE OUTCAST BAND played the folk-rock card but didn’t have the charisma to win hearts; STEVE STRONG brought scattershot, guitar-saturated post-rock to the party; while erstwhile ska-revivalists, THE BEAT,continued to milk their former glories with Ranking Roger at the helm.

Back on terra concrete, Keighley quartet, SOUNDS OF SWAMI, made a fair fist of inventive hardcore energy spliced with RX Bandits groove-outs and slithers of post-punk experimentation (White Rabbit, 28th May). While wired homeboys, FTO’s mix of gnarled and nasty hardcore, radical proselytising and pitch-defying backing vocals certainly dislodged the wax build-up in my long-suffering lug-holes.Phew what a scorcher! So went the first day of Freedom Fields festival: a community shindig held in one of Plymouth’s less, erm, conventional neighbourhoods (Lipson, 4-5th June). The usual suspects – including MAD DOG and PATRICK JAMES PEARSON BAND – put in very fine performances alongside a few moments of unexpected magic; namely Casio-rappers, HEDLUV’s dirty dancin’ dweeb routine, and the normally unassuming HEAD OF PROGRAMMES laying into the ethos of Ride Café... while playing on the Ride Café stage. You couldn’t make this stuff up. On Sunday the storm clouds gathered but it didn’t stop THE WATERBOARDERS from (eventually) tickling our fancies with surf-punk delicacies, or THE WIRELESS’ sprightly acoustic rock flavours.
