o This month-long restaurant promotion is cel-ebrating its thirteenth year of showcasing South Florida’s best restaurants. About 170 restaurants across all of Miami are participating in this year’s event. Each restaurant offers a three-course meal at the price of $23 for lunch and $39 for dinner. Some of the savings on these meals is over 50% the usual price. Restaurants such as Novecento, Il Mulino, Orange Blossom, Area 31, and Mignonette are all a part of this foodie favorite, which contin-ues to grow in popularity each year. Panic! at the Disco received their big break thanks to major indie superstar Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy fame. After hearing three songs from the Las Vegas-based group, Went immediately signed them onto his new label Decaydance Records. In 2005 that fi rst album, “A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out,” was released. It’s popularity swelled thanks to the hit single and music video “I Write Sins, Not Tragedies.” Before long they were a crossover smash hit band, with an emo, pop punk style. American punk band The Offspring found national success in the mid 1990s with their third studio album “Smash.” Hit singles “Come Out and Play,” “Self Esteem,” and “Gotta Get Away,” helped “Smash” become the highest grossing record off of an independent label. After signing with Co-lumbia Records, their success continued to climb. Now, twenty years after the release of “Smash,” The Offspring is on tour commemorating its anniversary. La Boheme

Not only the basis for smash Broadway musical “Rent,” but also one of the most popular operas of all time. Puccini’s breathtaking opera “La Boheme” celebrates Parisian artists struggling with their soaring hopes and the realities of their world. It is actually based upon Henri Murger’s novel, “Scenes de la vie de boheme,” a series of vignettes portraying the bohemian lifestyle. American pop rock band OneRepublic built an entire career off of the strength of their hit lead single, “Apologize.” That song’s massive success in 2006 catapulted OneRepublic into household names. Their third album, “Native,” released last year, produced the ubiquitous song “Counting Stars”—their most successful single to date, solidi-fying their status as one of the most popular pop acts around. Most of his influences come from the color palette of Russian Constructivist Alexandra Ex-ter, who assembled marionettes in the 1920s. From his days singing back up for Steely Dan to his brief tenure with the Doobie Brothers to writing a comedic song for Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s “South Park” movie, Michael McDonald has done it all in the recording industry. His soulful baritone style adds the perfect complement to such hit love ballads as “I Keep Forgettin’ (Every Time You’re Near)” and “On My Own.” He has won five Grammy Awards during his over thirty-year career. Toto also began their rise to fame in the 1970s, although finding their greatest success throughout the mid-1980s. Their songs “Rosanna,” “Africa,” and “I Won’t Hold You Back” are part of the American clas-sic rock radio repertoire. Here’s a bit of advice before you go see the new Lasse Hallström movie “The Hundred-Foot Journey” (Touch-

stone/DreamWorks). Don’t see it on an empty stomach. A feast for both the eyes and the belly, “The Hundred-Foot Journey” is the feel good/tastes good movie of the season.

comes across as a comeback for Hallström who seemed to have lost his footing in recent years. It’s a movie in the tradition of “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” and “Big Night,” featuring clashing adults, compet-ing dining destinations and chaos, as well as inevitable romance.

Hassan (the gorgeous Manish Dayal), his Papa (Oma Puri), two brothers and two sisters, arrive in a small village in the French coun-

tryside after being exiled from Mumbai and spending a year in London (under the Heath-row flight path). A van breakdown brake incident allows for Hassan and sous chef Mar-guerite (Charlotte Le Bon) to meet cute (it’s an international rom-com, kids!) before they discover they are going to be competitors. In spite of Hassan’s resistance, Papa went out and bought the abandoned restaurant across the road from the Michelin-starred restaurant run by the stuffy and fussy Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren) where Marguerite is employed.

After initially being dismissed as a joke, Mal-lory realizes that Maison Mumbai could spell trouble for her eating establishment; especially after she gets a taste of Hassan’s cooking (he’s

been studying the art of French cooking and adding his own Indian flourishes). There is a buffet of conflict, including Mallory and Papa’s personal war, as well as shocking racially-mo-tivated violence. But the laughs and goo-goo eyes, including those between Mallory and Papa, are as plentiful as a feast. Hassan passes Mallory’s omelet test and is hired away to help her earn her second Michelin star. Even at its most predictable, “The Hundred-Foot Journey” is filling and nourishing. It’s the kind of pleasing movie that can satisfy just about any craving.

Like Gillian Robespierre’s “Obvious Child,” “What If” (CBS Films/eOne) is a funny and touching rom-com for millennials. Based on a play by T. J. Dawe, the Toronto-set “What If” is bracketed by parties. At the first party, awkward but adorable med school drop-out-turned-manual writer Wallace (Daniel Radcliffe) meets animated animator Chantry (Zoe Kazan), the cousin of host Allan (Adam Driver). Wallace, recovering from a bad break-up, lives in his sister Ellie’s (Jemima Rooper) at-tic and can often be found stargazing on the roof. A somewhat more stable Chantry lives with Ben (Rafe Spall), her UN lawyer boyfriend of five years. A farewell party for Chantry, who has accepted a work-related transfer to Taiwan, and a wedding (not telling whose) make up the closing party bracket.

In between, we observe as Wallace and Chantry make an effort to become friends without putting unnecessary sexual strain on their relationship. Allan and new girlfriend/fiancé/bride Nicole (Mackenzie Davis) are of little or no help (see the campfire/beach scene) to the mixed gender pals. Chantry’s younger sister Dalia (Megan Park) almost means well, but alas she too comes up short when it comes to advising Chantry in matters of the heart and the head. But what fun it is to watch the two of them go through changes as they face the challenges.

“What If” is a little heavy on the physi-cal and gross-out comedy. Ben falls out of a window; Wallace goes down a flight of stairs. There’s a lot of bodily function talk, a choking/Heimlich scene and a whole bit involving a Fool’s Gold Loaf (go ahead, Google it) and El-vis Presley. Nevertheless, “What If” is refresh-ing, kooky and sexy. Radcliffe hold his own as a leading man and isn’t afraid of a bare butt shot. Kazan is as charming as ever.

The cheapest time to vacation in South Florida is from right now to the beginning of November. Hotel rates are dirt-cheap

and most attractions, except theme parks, have few visitors, making this a great time for a quick

o getaway. The following areas are all within a two-hour drive, making them perfect for a long day trip or a cheap weekend escape.

Miami offers two distinct opportunities for fun. Stay in Miami proper, or head to South

Beach, often referred to as the “Gay Riviera.” No matter which option you choose, it’s less than an hour’s drive away. If you prefer not to drive or deal with parking, take the Tri-Rail.

If you’re looking for a more urban escape, stay in Miami proper. Stay in downtown and get around easily and for free by jumping on the MetroMover, or check out Little Havana on SW 8th Street for some authentic Cuban food. You can also opt for Coconut Grove, the home to many of GLBT Miami’s community.

During your visit make certain to check out the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Stay at the Mayfair Hotel (3000 Florida Ave, Miami) for upscale amenities and spend the day in one of the rooftop poolside cabanas with spectacular ocean views. Wherever you stay, a visit to the Wynwood arts district is a must. Either drive or taxi as it is surrounded by some sketchy areas.

If you prefer to snooze away the afternoon on the beach, then dance the night away at one of the clubs, head for Miami Beach. By

taking the Tri-Rail, you can hop on a shuttle to Miami Beach, where you won’t need a car, as all the attractions are within walking distance. Hotel Gaythering (1409 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach) is a gay owned and operated boutique style hotel. It’s convenient to every-thing and features a lounge, coffee shop and do-it-yourself spa (sorry ladies, the spa is men only). The Hotel Nash (1120 Collins Ave, Mi-ami Beach), formerly Lords South Beach, was renovated a few years ago. Located in the heart of the Art Deco district, the guest rooms pay homage to femme fatales on stage and screen. Z Ocean (1437 Collins Ave, Miami Beach) offers a vast ar-ray of spa services should you want to pamper yourself. Book a pool lanai suite, which opens directly onto the hotel’s glass-bottom pool and oversized hot tub. The Dream (1111 Collins Ave, Miami Beach) located next to Versace mansion, features Art Deco designs with a Moroccan influence. The rooftop pool and lounge offers spectacular views of the Miami skyline.

Miami’s gay beach on 12th Street is marked with rainbow flags, making it easy to find. For an all-over tan, check out Haulover Beach. It’s quite a way from South Beach, but the Route 120 Beach MAX bus will take you right there. Take a break from the sun and shop along Washington or on Lincoln Road. Books and Books (927 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach) is a great place to pick up a beach read and the café’s a reasonably

priced dining option.For breathtaking sunsets and white sand

beaches, drive a little more than an hour and a half’s west to the gulf coast. Naples is a sweet little town with incredible shopping, golf courses and great beaches. The stretch from Seagate Drive to Gordon is where you’ll find the best spots. While not overwhelmingly gay, it is a gay friendly destination.

Club level suites come with a personal concierge, secluded rooftop retreat and daily snacks.

For dining and drinking, Mangrove Café (878 5th Ave S, Naples) puts an international spin on its cuisine and Chops City Grill (837 5th Avenue S, Naples) is a favorite steak house. While the nightlife isn’t particularly wild, Bambusa Bar & Grill (600 Goodlette Rd N, Naples) is a casual spot to grab a few drinks before or after dinner, or stay and enjoy the drag shows and “Bitchy Bingo.” The Real Macaw (3275 Bayshore Dr, Naples) offers live music on weekends.

Key Largo is the northernmost of the chain of keys that terminate in Key West. While not as raucous as Key West, it still feels a world away – and it’s only an hour and a half from Fort Lauderdale. Key Largo has two state parks, a national park, a national ma-rine sanctuary, and boasts some of the most fascinating botanical scenery in the state. The clear water and the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and National Marine Sanctu-ary (10261 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo) make Key Largo a top diving destination. Even if it’s your first time snorkeling, the beautiful tropical waters and spectacular under the sea world make you want to return.

If being in the water isn’t your thing, feel free to relax along the water’s edge or at a ho-tel pool. Art collectors (and fans) will appreciate the work at a number of local galleries. All the natural beauty combined with the unique qual-ity of the light has made Key Largo a favorite spot for artists.

Accommodations are available at all price and luxury levels. Mariner’s Resort Villas and Marina (97501 Overseas Highway, Key Largo) has an outdoor pool, courts, a Jacuzzi and an on-site restaurant serving lunch and dinner. It also has 65 villas designed to house families or groups. Sunset Cove Beach Beach (99360 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo), while in no way luxurious, does have a private beach and free bicycle rental. For a more upscale stay, the Hilton Key Largo Resort (97000 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo) provides the largest private beach with a quarter-mile-long boardwalk trail.

Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen (99020 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo) serves up three meals a day and is consistently rated among the top Kay Largo dining destinations and its Key lime pie is world famous. The Fish House (102401 Overseas Hwy

Key Largo) and Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill (with its pool and cabanas!) (104000 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo) are other good dining op-tions. There are no gay bars in Key Largo, but you should check out Caribbean Club (104080 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo) with its extensive memorabilia from the 1948 movie Bogie and Bacall movie “Key Largo.” The Pilot House, Marina and Glass Bottom Bar (13 Seagate Blvd, Key Largo) is renowned for its bar with 30 reinforced glass panels to view undersea life as you drink.

While in Key Largo make certain to stop by Dolphin Cove (101900 Overseas Hwy, Key Largo) for a chance to swim with the dol-phins. The freestyle snorkel program provides a chance to interact with the dolphins in a natural setting, and for those who are less accomplished swimmers, there is the option of a shallow water encounter. Unlike many other places, the dolphins do not leap out of the water and perform any trained behaviors; they interact naturally, as if you came upon them in open water. For either program, the cost is $165 per swimmer in-water time is 30 minutes and snorkel gear is provided for the deeper water encounter.

every day. On the surface you are doing everything correctly. You should be full of vim and vigor, ready to greet life with a smile and a song, right?! But the truth is, you often feel tired, listless, crappy, and you just can’t figure out why.
