People’s Choice has ‘something for everyone’
By G. KERRY [email protected]
BOALSBURG — Thousands will descend upon the grounds of the Boalsburg Military Museum Thursday, July 14, through Sunday, July 17, for the annual People’s Choice Festival of Pennsylvania Arts & Crafts.
The festival, which promotes only Pennsylvania artists, crafters, food vendors and wineries, took root in the early 1990s. At that time, local artists took it upon themselves and decided to start their own festival.
To committee member Sandie Biddle, there is a huge difference between the two.
“First, I want to say that we’re not in competition with Arts Fest,” Biddle said. “Having both events at the same time is a wonderful boon to the Centre Region’s economy. They are both getting people to come to Centre County.
“But, what we offer at the People’s Choice festival is an affordable, family-friendly alternative to the event downtown.”
The event is free and open to the public, said Biddle, and she encourages visitors to bring their children and their dogs.
“There’s something there for everyone,” she said. “Kids’ day is every day at the People’s Choice Festival. There are tons of things going on throughout the weekend.”
Two hundred vendor spots were made available for vendors, and they fi lled quickly.
“We have several artists return year after year, but we also have new vendors each year,” she said. “We like to keep things fresh and add new things when we can. We went through a lot of applications this year. Lots of people want to be a part of our event.”
Sometimes, Biddle said, the committee receives

interest from out-of-state vendors. Those applications are immediately turned away.
“We want to keep everything local, including the art and artists who display their works,” said Biddle.
Many of the vendors, including jewelry and knife makers, woodworkers, painters, drafters and more, offer handmade items. Several photographers display scenes depicting landscapes and wildlife of Pennsylvania. There also will be a handful of knitting and crocheting vendors present.
“Many people come to get their Christmas shopping done early,” said Biddle.
In addition to the artists and their displays, there are also nearly two dozen food vendors, a handful of specialty food vendors and several area wineries who will be in attendance.
“We also have a tremendous lineup of entertainment booked,” she said. “We have about 40 different bands, performers and musicians that will use two stages to play their music. We have rock music scheduled, big band music, local professionals like Velveeta and Pure Cane Sugar, and even belly dancers.”
Biddle said one of the best things about the People’s Choice Festival is that it hasn’t changed much from that fi rst festival in the 1990s. She said the only difference is the size.
“Of course, we’re much bigger today than we were when it fi rst started,” she said. “People see the value in coming to our event. There’s no fee to get in, the prices of the items are affordable and we’re located in a wide-open space, so there’s lots of room to roam freely.”
Biddle said those attending the event “won’t need a lot of money.” Instead, she said, they’ll just need plenty of time to stroll the grounds and take in all the wonderful booths and tents.
“We have free water and sunscreen available,” said Biddle. “Other than that, I suggest people wear something they can be comfortable in and maybe bring a blanket to sit on under a tree to escape the sun.”

Food and treats galore at People’s Choice Festival
By G. KERRY [email protected]
BOALSBURG — The 24th annual People’s Choice Festival of Pennsylvania Arts & Crafts is scheduled for Thursday, July 14, through Sunday, July 17, on the grassy grounds of the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Historic Boalsburg, and already, more than 20 food proprietors and a handful of specialty vendors have signed on to be there.
Tom Sherlock, of Abbotstown, and Sherlock’s Beef Pit has been a staple in the lineup. Located in a shady spot at the end of the food vendor line, near the creek,
Sherlock’s Pit Beef offers beef — and lots of it.
“We serve only one item and we do it very well,” Sherlock said. “We have bottom round roasted to perfection, sliced paper thin, piled high and topped with your choice of caramelized onions, barbecue sauce or the hottest horseradish you ever had.”
Sherlock, a former Penn State student, said he continues to return each year because of all the friends he has made, and because of the returning customers.
“The People’s Choice Festival is a well-attended event,” he said. “I always enjoy returning to my old haunts, too. I’ll be back next year as well.”
Billed as “The World’s Greatest Concession Crab Cakes,” Sherri’s Fun Foods, owned and operated by Keith Behney, of Camp Hill, returns for the 17th straight year in 2016. In addition to serving crab cakes, the concession will also offer cream of crab soup and drinks.
“This is one of our favorite events,” said Behney. “Great people come to it, great people run it and it’s just an all-around top-tier event.”
Bob’s Concessions has served a number of different items to festival-goers for the past decade. Owned by Bob and Loretta Raycroft, of Wood, the food booth offers roasted corn on the cob, loaded baked potatoes, frozen chocolate-dipped bananas and grilled cheese sandwiches on Texas toast.
“We have made friends with many craft vendors at the festival,” said Bob Raycroft, “and have developed a following of faithful customers in the Centre County Area.”

Those visiting Bob’s Concessions in 2016 will have a few more options.
“This year, we will be offering fresh steamed broccoli and fresh fried bacon as options for the baked potatoes,” Raycroft said.
Bob’s Concessions will continue to return to the festival, as long as he and his wife are able, he said.
“The festival has a wonderful, family-friendly atmosphere that we value and wish to support,” he said.
Sherlock’s Beef Pit, Bob’s Concessions and Sherri’s Fun Foods will surely be recognizable to past visitors of the event, but, rest assured, there will be several new booths at which people can feed their hunger.
Greg and LuAnn Yearick, of Centre Hall, will bring Cajun Express II to the festival for the fi rst time. The booth will sell a variety of Cajun delights, such as shrimp-on-a-stick, frog legs, catfi sh fi llets and sandwiches, crab cake nuggets and more. They will also add a new item to the menu for the People’s Choice Festival — gator-on-a-stick.
The Yearicks grew up in Centre County, in the Centre Hall and Boalsburg areas, and the People’s Choice Festival was an event they attended as spectators. They noted that’s what makes it so special for them to “have the honor” of being a vendor this year.
Local concessionaires Ashley Hamilton and Greg Nau, of Bellefonte, will bring Rosie’s Pierogies to the festival. The business offers a variety of homemade pierogies, including regular, jalapeno and bacon — an original recipe. The booth will also serve the popular Polish dish haluski, made of cabbage and egg noodles.
According to the owners, Rosie’s Pierogies is excited to be a part of the People’s Choice Festival and “can’t wait to see everyone there.”

A growing niche in the outdoor food vendor market is in specialty foods.
Ann and Gene Acri, of New Cumberland, will bring a unique blend of handcrafted pottery and dip mixes to the festival with their concession, Pottery and Country 4 You. The couple uses its own personally designed molds and recipes for their products. They agreed that People’s Choice is an excellent show for repeat
customers.
Al and Maryann Weimert, of Port Matilda, will be returning to the Boalsburg festival for the fi fth straight year. The Big Al’s Mustard concession will feature eight homemade mustards, including Buckhorn Burner and Blazing Mare.
“People in the State College area are huge supporters of local products, especially if they are homemade,” said Al Weimert. “We enjoy coming back each year to meet new people and talk again with returning customers.”
Other specialty food vendors expected to attend the festival include: Dennis Farms, of Cooperstown, with maple-related products; Mister G Coffee Co., of Reedsville, with fresh-roasted coffee; JD Gourmet, of Tannersville, with vinegar-olive oil blends; Chef Tim Foods, of Etters, with steak seasonings; Torchbearer Sauces; Whisker Biscuits, of Stroudsburg, with handmade dog treats; RAZZ’s Hickory Syrup; The Piper’s Peck, of Bellefonte, with fruit jams and jellies; and Tait Farm Foods Inc., of Centre Hall, with fruit spreads and condiments.

Eclectic music lineup features a little bit of everything
By JODI [email protected]
BOALSBURG — This year’s lineup at the People’s Choice Festival has something to offer for all ages and each and every musical taste, from big band to jazz to pop and modern rock. Check out the daily schedule for the festival’s free live entertainment, Thursday, July 14, through Sunday, July 17.
THURSDAY, JULY 14NOON■ North: The Backyard RockersClassic rock isn’t going anywhere, and it’s because musicians like The Backyard Rockers are constantly fi nding fresh ways to reinvigorate the genre. Known for their “free-form approach,” these musicians channel Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and Neil Young, reminding us all why they were the best musicians of their time.
■ South: The Corner BrothersAcoustic rock duo Tyler and Matt Greer describe themselves
as “blood brothers who started playing on the streets of State College in 2010.” The brothers, who are from Port Matilda, play alternative, modern and folk acoustic rock. From ‘80s and ‘90s rock to today’s music, the pair plays anything and everything from Simon and Garfunkel to The Darkness.
1:30 P.M.■ North: CLC Gleeks & Gleekettes
■ South: Truth Seekers Anyone who enjoys classic acoustic and folk rock should check out the Truth Seekers. The duo, Katherine Kaufman and Mark Knarr, plays both unique cover songs and their own original music. They call Central Pennsylvania home, and enjoy sharing all of their songs with their audiences.
3 P.M.■ North: David Zentner Trio If you’re a fan of Conway Twitty and George Strait, then you’ll love David Zentner’s humble, down-to-earth brand of classic

country. A former solo musician from Nashville, Zentner takes audiences back to when heartwarming country music reigned Billboard’s singles chart. Zentner released a CD, “My Kind of Country,” during the past year.
■ South: Black Cat Belly Dance and FriendsShannon Bishop is an expert in Middle Eastern and Egyptian styles of belly dance, and her dance troupe, Pepper Lotus Dance Ensemble, is the only of its kind in the entire region. With her exotic, languid movements, Bishop and her troupe have hypnotized audiences up and down the East Coast. She’s been invited to perform at People’s Choice numerous times in the past, and also puts on regular shows at Kaarma India Restaurant in downtown State College.
4:30 P.M. ■ North: The Second Winds These musicians have an energy on stage that continues to liven up the crowd year after year. They play everything from jazz and swing to big band covers and Latin hits. The Second Winds proves that age really is just a number — but music is timeless.
■ South: Tussey Mountain Moonshiners Winners of the 2010 DelFest Bluegrass Band Competition, the Moonshiners love everything to do with bluegrass and string music. They’re a fi ve-piece quintet with a long history of playing together, but they don’t sing covers — originals only, please. The Moonshiners released their debut album, “I’m Going Home,” to stellar critic reviews in 2011.
6 P.M.■ North: Dan & Galla Musical Show Dan and Galla are a husband-and-wife team who put on a lively and dynamic performance when they take the stage. Dan plays the piano, keyboard, accordion and trumpet, while Galla plays the Russian three-stringed balalaika, along with guitar, fl ute and ukulele. Both are singers, too. They play a variety of genres, from ‘50s and ‘60s music to country, ragtime, polkas, Irish and Big Band. www.gallaanddan.com
■ South: Miss Melanie & The Valley RatsWith Miss Melanie’s incomparable and powerful voice, backed up by the instrumentals of the Valley Rats, this group has established a loyal following throughout the Central Pennsylvania region and beyond. Having appeared with the likes of B.B. King, Jay Leno, Johnny Winter, James Cotton, The Nighthawks, J.J. Grey, Robert Randolph and a host of others, this group has made a name for themselves in their fi ve-plus years of performing together.

BOALSBURG — Local winemakers are showing up more and more frequently at local summer festivals, and when the People’s Choice Festival rolls into Boalsburg, with it will come seven Pennsylvania wine producers, each bringing samples for tasting and bottles to take home.
Four local wine companies will make return appearances to the festival.
Seven Mountain Wine Cellars has been producing wine for the past seven years in Spring Mills. The business is owned by Scott and Mary Ann Bubb, and each employee is a member of the Bubb family.
“We’re very proud of our family and we’re all very passionate about our craft,” said Brandon Mitchell, who manages Seven Mountain’ Wine Cellar’s wine bar in Boalsburg. “That passion translates into the taste of the many different varieties we have available.”
Seven Mountain Wine Cellars has been present at the People’s
Choice Festival for the past three years, and, according to Mitchell, the business is excited about making a return trip.
“It’s nice to run into our customers, as well as meet new ones,” said Mitchell. “We’ve had a lot of fun the last three years just being out there talking with people about wine, the festival and all the beautiful works of art on display. It’s a perfect festival.”
Seven Mountain Wine Cellars, like all winemakers at the event, will be providing samples, as well as bottles to purchase.
“I’m not sure exactly how many varieties we’re going to have at the festival, but I do encourage anyone who likes wine to sample each one,” Mitchell said. He said favorites of customers include Blackberry Merlot, which he said was a “perfect middle-of-the-road” wine; Tickle Me Pink, which is the customers’ choice of sweet wines; and All Razzed, which can be used to make a delicious sangria.
Joe and Betty Carroll has been operating Mount Nittany Vineyard and Winery for 26 years. The business made its fi rst appearance at the People’s Choice Festival last season, and

according to Deb Young, tasting room representative, it was well received.
“We’re happy to be coming back,” said Young. “It’s a great atmosphere for a festival. All the people are friendly and we enjoy meeting new people. The art is spectacular and the food is just as good.
“This is an event we didn’t want to miss.”
Mount Nittany Vineyard and Winery produces 23 different varieties of wine, and according to Young, it’s hard to choose the best one.
“All of our selections are very smooth and very clear and they all have a nice fi nish,” she said.
Unfortunately, the winemakers won’t be able to transport their beautiful setting to the festival.
“The one main thing that stands out for us, besides our yummy wine, is the venue,” said Young. “We sit on 6 acres here and look out over the Tussey Mountain skiing area. We have a pond and beautiful views all around. It’s breathtaking.”
Happy Valley Vineyard and Winery is located in State College and produces specifi c varieties that transform well into its specifi c wines. It was established in 1999 with an initial 3 acres of vines on land fi rst settled for farming in the 1850s. The vineyard has since tripled in size and consists of white and red cultivators that are well adapted to the climate changes in Centre County.
Because the vineyard grows more than 13 different grapes, the winery produces a wide variety of styles, from dry, fruity whites to oaky, full-bodied reds.
U-Freeze Wine Slush, of Port Matilda, produces wine-based drinks that are meant to be frozen and enjoyed.
Made with wine and natural ingredients, there is no high-fructose corn syrup or chemicals added. The drinks are produced by University Wine Company, a family-owned winery.
There are also a handful of wine producers from outside the Centre Region that will attend the festival.

Starr Hill Winery is based in Curwensville and is owned and operated by the Starr family. According to Ken Starr, his company took root in 1994 with the purchase of property in Clearfi eld County where he planted 12 vines. By 1998, there were 3,000 vines and the winery was constructed. His business went commercial in 2005.
“We now produce 40 different kinds of wine,” said Starr. “We’re looking forward to being a part of the People’s Choice Festival and to have the opportunity to share our product with new faces.”
Sand Castle Winery, of Erwinna, Bucks County, has attended
the festival since its beginning. Co-owner Joe Maxian said its one of his favorite summer events in Pennsylvania, and although it’s a bit of a drive, traveling the miles is worth it.
“The people really make the festival what it is, and that’s quality,” said Maxian. “We’ve met so many people and have acquired so many customers by coming to Boalsburg that we make sure to make the People’s Choice Festival on the calendar each year.”
According to Maxian, Sand Castle Winery will once again bring its European-based recipes to Centre County.
“Our wines are heavily infl uenced by European-made wines,” said Maxian. “We’ve been innovative in the way we grow our grapes. Grapes that only could be grown on the West Coast before are now being grown on the East Coast. We fi gured out how to do it, and we’ve been able to produce some pretty tasty wine with our fruits.”
Maxian said the company’s biggest seller is the Alpine Spice, which is a mix of chardonnay and riesling milled with a secret spice blend. Other favorites include the dry rose, which has a hint of berry with a sweet fi nish, and the port wine, which is a dessert wine.
Stonekeep Meadery is Pennsylvania’s fi rst dedicated meadery, and it’s bringing its honey-based wine to Boalsburg for the festivities. The handcrafted mead is created from fresh fruits and juices and raw honey, all harvested in the Keystone state. The recipes are from centuries ago; however, Stonekeep adds a modern twist to the formulas.
This will be Stonekeep’s fi rst appearance at the People’s Choice Festival.

Activities for children kick off at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 14, and continue straight through to the end of the festival, which wraps up on Sunday, July 17.
The lineup for each day features the same activities, although additional special events are scheduled on select days. Saturday is Kids’ Character Day and the young artisans sale is hosted only Thursday through Saturday.
THURSDAY, JULY 14On Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., the State College Senior High Thespians will be hosting face painting. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., children can display and sell their works of art at the Young Artisans Sale. From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., the Hands-On Kids Science Museum will be open to guests, along with the Dominion Science Center, Quaint Corner Children’s Museum,
PSU Altoona Mobile Science Lab and Ashburn’s Animals on a Mission. Children can also enjoy a petting zoo and pony rides, T-shirt tie-dying, the Little Smilin’ Choo Choo and bounce houses.
FRIDAY, JULY 15Friday’s kids’ schedule is the same as Thursday’s, with an additional three special events. These events include the Tumblebus from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
SATURDAY, JULY 16Saturday is a special day for kids — it’s Kids’ Character Day, featuring Ike the Spike, Smokey Bear, Bookie the Bear and more. The same activities offered Thursday will also be available, including the Science Museum, petting zoo and bounce houses.
SUNDAY, JULY 17 The kids’ weekend concludes with an abbreviated schedule on Sunday. The Science Museum, Dominion Science Center, Quant Corner Children’s Museum and PSU Altoona Mobile Science Lab will be open from noon to 5:00 p.m. Also open between those times are the petting zoo and pony rides, T-shirt tie-dying, the Little Smilin’ Choo Choo and bounce houses.
Community tents will be open to offer a variety of community-focused activities, including a free water giveaway, pet rescue information stations and story time.
A more detailed list of the activities designed to keep children entertained throughout all four days of the festival is available online at www.peopleschoicefestival.com.

UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State did not show very much on offense in the Nit-tany Lions’ 20-14 victory over Army West Point on Oct. 3 at Beaver Stadium.Whether it was the terrible weather, Army’s early fumbles, the effects of a rash of injuries, or a combination of all those, Penn State played it unusually close to the vest. The Nittany Lions took a 10-point lead into halftime, and they did open it up once for a long three-play drive in the third quarter after Army pulled to within 13-7. But that was it, as they again relied on their defense to pull out the win against Army’s relentless triple option — which it did with a sack late in the fourth quarter on an Army fourth-and-5 play from the 50.
“Not where we need to be” is the way Penn State coach James Franklin described the PSU offense.“There’s no doubt about it. Not where we need to be. We’re inconsistent. What’s killing us are penalties. We get ourselves in too many long yardage situation. I do think the weather has had a factor in some of that, but that’s not the reason. That’s been a factor, one of many factors.
“The penalties, we’re not in a position to overcome those long yardage situations on third down and things like that. We picked one up tonight on a screen and we almost picked up another one, obviously handing the ball off on a run game. We have a lot of work to do in that area which is obvious to everybody.”Penn State has now won four games in a row with its defense, especially in the last two games, being asked to make up for a balky offense and some special-teams mistakes.
With the meat of the Big Ten schedule at hand, the days of letting the defense go it alone may be over.On Saturday, Oct. 10, the 4-1 Indi-ana Hoosiers will visit Beaver Stadium in the last game of a fi ve-game home
stand, and Indiana will bring with it a high-powered offense that is averag-ing 498 yards of offense per game and 36 points. After watching Indiana beat Southern Illinois, FIU, Western Kentucky and Wake Forest, all eyes were on the Ohio State game on Oct. 3 to see if the IU offense was for real.
It was.In the end, No. 1 Ohio State prevailed, 34-27, on the legs of a monster day by run-ning back Ezekiel Elliott and some defen-sive heroics. But Indiana was right there, with chances to tie late, even though starting quarterback Nate Sudfeld left the game and was replaced by sneaky-fast Zander Diamont. Diamont fi nished the game as Indiana’s leading rusher with 98 yards on seven carries and a touchdown. He also threw for 76 yards on six of 14 pass completions. In all, Indiana ran 91 plays, scored three rushing touchdowns and gained 402 yards against the Buckeye defense.
For the season, Jordan Howard leads Indiana in rushing with 709 yards on 125 attempts for an average of 141 yards per game. Devine Redding is second with 56 per game, and the team is averaging 224.Sudfeld is 87 for 147 through the air for 1,277 yards and seven touchdowns. Three receivers have double-digit re-ceptions, led by Ricky Jones with 21 for 446 yards and three touchdowns. When Indiana struggles, it is on de-fense. The Hoosiers give up an average of 32 points every game and a whop-ping 502 yards of total offense. That in-cludes 337 yards per game passing and 12 touchdowns. In his weekly press conference on Oct. 5, Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson looked forward to the game with the Nittany Lions.“Penn State, very, very good on defense, very, very good,” he said. “Twenty-one sacks, fi rst or second in the nation. Just
a great run defense, don’t
give up points. Just awesome up front. Linebacker, structure, well coached, secondary knows what it’s doing, know where they’re going to get attacked and how to
prevent stress.“Defense and play-
ing at their place will be very, very chal-
lenging with crowd noise and all the
great things they do there.
“Always a great kick-ing game. A l w a y s have those
l inebacker types, those
safety types, covering punts, covering kicks. They’ve got some really great skill players. I know offensively they’ve been a little bit out of sync, but their receivers, Hamilton, Godwin. Those guys can roll, and they make plays.“They’ve played in bad weather games. I think it’s limited their ability to con-nect with the pass game. Tight ends, a couple big guys they use. Running backs, skill, a couple kids have been hurt. Their of-
fensive skill set is very, very scary. They’ve had in their transi-tion, they’ve had depth problems at line. They’re better. Got a top JC guy. When their line gets going and one of the pre-mier quarterbacks in college ball can get run game and rhythm, they’re a great offense.“Tremendous defensive challenge. Great playmakers on offense. They’ve been really, really close. They’ve won four in a row. It’s their homecoming. It’s going to be a tough environment.”
So, this is a match-up of contrasting teams. Indiana comes in with a potent scoring attack and a porous defense, and Penn State has an outstanding defense and an offense that has not come together for any consistent length of time. This is another game where the Penn State defense will again have to be at its best. But it is also a game where it will need to be complemented with some offense and good fi eld position. A little rest here and there wouldn’t hurt either.
Kickoff is set for noon on ESPN2.
