Mr JAMES CLANCY PRINCIPAL

Year 7 Parent Evening Thank you to the many parents and carers who attended our information evenings over the past three weeks. Last Thursday evening was a great opportunity for Year 7 parents and carers to meet our staff and other parents of Year 7 students. I appreciate the work of the college staff in making the night so beneficial for our new families. We have been very impressed with the way Year 7 have commenced and hope Year 7 are beginning to feel that they belong to the Aquinas family. Supervision The College provides supervision from 8.25am each morning until Pastoral Care begins at 8.45am. On arrival to school students should remain in the Library, Nagle Paved and Lower Paved areas. Supervision is provided each afternoon for students travelling by bus, until the final bus departs at approximately 3.40pm. Students waiting for a school special bus are to wait in the Rice Pavilion until called by the supervising teacher. 2021 Open Evening Please note that our process for enrolling students in Year 7 at Aquinas Catholic College for 2021 will commence with our Open Night on Wednesday 6 March starting at 6:30pm in the John Paul II Hall, followed by guided tours of the campus from 6.50pm. Tours will depart throughout the evening with the last tour commencing at 8.20pm to cater for families who may wish to attend the Ash Wednesday Mass at 7.00pm in Holy Family Church. We look forward to welcoming future students and their families on what is a wonderful showcase of what Aquinas Catholic College has to offer.

Screen Addiction Parent Evening St John Bosco College Engadine are hosting an evening for parents on Screen Overuse / Addiction in Children and Teens, on

Wednesday, 6 March from 6.30pm. Further information can be found on page 4. I highly recommend this event to parents and

carers who want to stay up to date with current information and strategies for using the internet safely.

Last Monday, Aquinas converged on Sutherland Aquatic Centre for the 2019 swimming carnival. In warm conditions the four houses battled it out in the pool and on Waratah oval for supremacy. House spirit was a feature, culminating in an entertaining and closely fought War Cry competition. Well done to La Salle being crowned 2019 War Cry victors. At our major school assembly I look forward to recognising the age champions and overall winning house. A big thank you to all staff for their support in running a smooth carnival. Well done to all the students in attendance for making it a memorable day.

Eucharist Mass│ Mr Steven O’Connor

Last Thursday the entire community gathered together to celebrate the Eucharist. The Mass was led by our College chaplains Fr Daniele and Fr Dan. During the Mass, our 2019 student leaders were commissioned in a formal ceremony where they received their badges of office blessed by Fr Daniele. New staff to the College were officially welcomed along with our new College Principal Mr Clancy who also read a statement of commitment. The musicians and vocalists enlivened the celebration to their usual high standard and it was fitting that they were brought to centre stage by Mr Clancy to be acknowledged by the community for their hard work and expertise.

As the year progresses students will continue to attend the 9:15am Wednesday morning Mass with the Holy Family Parish. Year 10 will attend this week (27th February) and the following week Year 7 and 8 will attend for Ash Wednesday (6th March). Parents are more than welcome to attend any of the morning Masses at the parish. For more details on Holy Family Parish Mass times please visit their website.

In the coming weeks we will be starting our Sacramental Programme.

A number of students have signed up for the course but it is not too late to join. The course is ideal for

students who would like to become Catholic or for students who have missed any of their other sacraments

such as First Eucharist or Confirmation. For further information please contact me via email on

World Youth Day 2019 in Panama │ Anna Rickert, Nagle 11

Our Lady of Guadalupe Pilgrimage in Mexico

In January, Ethan, myself, as well as 28 other students and teachers from around Sydney along with Fr Daniele, travelled as part of Bus 3 to central America to celebrate World Youth Day in Panama. We were in one of six bus groups travelling to Panama, and one of four bus groups taking part in the Our Lady of Guadalupe pilgrimage in Mexico.

We left Sydney on the 16th of January and arrived in Mexico at 10:30pm local time on the 16th. During our pilgrimage in Mexico, we visited both historical and religious sites including the Aztec Pyramids, the Pyramid of the Sun and the Moon, The Church of the Fifth Apparition, The Church of Our Lady of Remedies, the Puebla Cathedral, the Temple of Santo Domingo and the National Museum of Anthropology. As well as the pinnacle site of our pilgrimage the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe where we saw the miraculous tilma of St Juan Diego which holds the image of Our Lady. At the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, we had the opportunity to celebrate Mass in the Basilica with the Diocese of Sydney, Parramatta and Melbourne.

We arrived in Panama on Monday the 21st of January to celebrate World Youth Week with young Catholics from around the world and with Pope Francis. Each day we attended catechesis with the English speaking countries including the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom and South Africa. During the afternoons we attended some of the major events occurring around the city, including the Opening Mass celebrated by the Archbishop of Panama, The Papal Welcome where the Pope gave his first address and the Stations of the Cross. On Saturday the 26th we walked to the location of the Final Mass for the Vigil and the sleep out. The Final Mass was celebrated the next day by Pope Francis which marked the end of World Youth Day Week 2019. It was announced that the next World Youth Day would be held in Lisbon, Portugal in 2022.

Following World Youth Day week on the 28th of January, we visited the Panama Canal before heading to our retreat hotel. During the one and half days at the hotel, we were able to reflect on what we had experienced during the two weeks in Mexico and Panama and prepare for the trip back to Australia. Our retreat was lead by Steve Angrisano and consisted of bus group sessions, pilgrim group sessions and sessions with the six bus groups from Sydney.

Overall, World Youth Day was a phenomenal experience that showed us the enormity of our faith around the world and gave us a greater appreciation of our faith. We met so many amazing from people from Sydney, Australia and around the world who share the same faith.
