Trelleborg CRP manufacture resilientpolyethylene foam buoy bodies in a widerange of diameters and nett buoyancies. The buoy bodies can be supplied “plain”, or fitted with the relevant marker ornavigation equipment – e.g. beacons, solarpowered or dry cell batteries, radarreflectors etc. A typical range of buoydiameters from 1 to 5 metres are availablebut Trelleborg CRP will manufactureprecisely to client specifications whenrequired.

Navigation and marker buoys are commonlysupplied to replace heavy and cumbersomesteel buoys. They are easily lifted on siteusing smaller maintenance vessels, arehighly stable and can be used in shallowwater.

Trelleborg CRP produce marker buoys withthe whole flotation core manufactured fromresilient, closed cell, polyethylene foam. The foam is thermolaminated aroundinternal steelwork and encapsulated withina tough, abrasion resistant, polyurethaneelastomer skin.

Use of a polyethylene core, rather thanconventional polyurethane ensures thateven if the skin is punctured the buoy willnot sink as it will not absorb water, therefore extending lifespan and reducingmaintenance costs. The high impactabsorption capacity of this material alsomakes the buoys self-fendering.

Polyurethane elastomer is self colouredand will not attract marine growth. It isdurable, flexible and resistant to bothabrasion and ultra violet degradation. In extreme operating conditions the skincan be further strengthened with use of a suitable reinforcement.

The buoys can be colour coded to suit“IALA” standards.

Manufactured from resilient, closed cellpolyethylene foam, Trelleborg CRP’sSuitcase Anchor Pendant Buoys (APBs) aredesigned to withstand the rigorousconditions associated with the offshoreindustry.

Designed specifically with large flatsurfaces for safe and secure storageonboard anchor handling vessels,Trelleborg CRP APBs have an enviable reputation for quality and performance.

Trelleborg CRP Suitcase Anchor PendantBuoys are constructed by laminatingresilient polyethylene foam around acentral steel member with a number ofinternal load distribution plates, togetherwith large gussets welded in position. Thisresilient polyethylene core ensures that thebuoy is completely self fendering (i.e. softbuoy). The rectangular shape also allowseasy and safe storage and transportation.

The whole core is encapsulated within a self coloured thick polyurethane elastomerprotective coating which is resistant toabrasion and to ultra violet degradation.

The closed cell structure of the resilientpolyethylene foam core means that thebuoy will not absorb water, even if the skinis punctured therefore maintainingbuoyancy and functionality.

The table below shows a range of standardsizes only, other sizes or specificbuoyancy/dimensions required areevaluated on application. A variety ofsteelwork options, e.g. anchor cross, padeye, swivels etc. (see diagram) are available.

Modular Anchor Pendant Buoys

6

Modular Buoy on location offshore Canada. LB200 pipelay barge deploying Trelleborg CRP Buoys.

Trelleborg CRP offers two types of surfacemodular Anchor Pendant Buoy:

• Standard Modular Anchor Pendant Buoy

• Donut Modular Anchor Pendant Buoy

Standard Modular Anchor Pendant Buoy

Standard Modular Anchor Pendant buoysconsist of removable, interchangeablemodules with discrete end modules andcentre modules assembled onto centralsteelwork and fixed in position withretaining flanges, making up buoys rangingfrom 1Te to 100Te nett buoyancy.

This system allows for the number ofcentre modules to vary according to thenett buoyancy required. By adding orsubtracting the centre modules, buoys canbe redeployed on future projects, makingthem a viable and cost effective option.

Each module is manufactured from a highperformance, low density rigidpolyurethane foam core, totallyencapsulated within a rigid polymer skin. The polyurethane core is lightweight andclosed cell in nature and will not absorbwater even if the skin is punctured. Themodules are for surface use only andshould not be submerged and subjected tohydrostatic pressure.

Nominal skin thickness is 12-14mm and iscoloured bright yellow. The skin providesprotection for the flotation core againstimpact damage during deployment andrecovery from the vessel.

Fabricated from carbon steel to BS EN 10025, the standard steelwork consists of acentral tubular section with an anchorhandling cross at one end and a pad eyecapable of accepting a shackle at theother. The steelwork is blast cleaned andcoal tar epoxy painted.

The buoy is assembled by threading themodules onto the central steelwork.Location spigots placed between adjacentmodules ensure alignment and preventrotation during deployment, and themodules are also keyed to the end flangesto further prevent rotation.

The end flanges are welded into position, should extra modules be required orremoved the weld is ground away and theflange removed.

Donut Modular Anchor Pendant Buoy

For over twenty years Donut ModularAnchor Pendant Buoys have beensuccessfully manufactured and supplied by Trelleborg CRP, mainly for pipe layingoperations.

They were first introduced in the mid1980’s to replace traditional heavy steelbuoys which were outlawed in the NorthSea as they posed a danger to fishing andother vessels.

The “donut” modular system typicallycomprises of 2 or 4 removable andinterchangeable modules which rotatearound a central steel skeleton or frame. A nett buoyancy range from 4Te to 40Te is achievable.

The buoyancy modules (donuts) areconstructed by spiral winding and thermo-laminating polyethylene foam onto a central steel spool, producing an energy absorbing core which is then encapsulated within a toughpolyurethane elastomer protectiveskin. The resilient core ensures thatthe buoy is completely self fenderingand the buoy is also resistant toabrasion and ultra violet degradation.

Trelleborg CRP Modular Anchor PendantBuoy systems can be manufactured to suitany specific size or buoyancy requirement.

Although standard production colours areyellow or orange, Trelleborg CRP willmanufacture modular buoys in othercolours to meet specific customerrequirements.

Optional items include internal radarreflectors, reflective tape and navigationlights.

General Surface Support Buoys

8

Floating Hose Pick-Up Buoys.

Trelleborg CRP’s General Surface SupportBuoys are manufactured from apolyethylene thermolaminated foam coreencapsulated within a self-colouredpolyurethane outer skin. Used extensivelyin single point mooring (SPM) systems, thethree main types of support buoy are:

Cylindrical Buoy (CB)

• Removable clevis plate/eye.

• Central tension member designed to suitthe client’s Safe Working Load.

Chain-Through Buoy (CTB)

• Central tube for chain to pass through.

• Chain locking device, on one end or both, securing the buoy to the chain.

Pick-Up Buoy (PU)

Trelleborg CRP general purpose pick-upbuoys are used for mooring, marker andpick-up duties.

All General Surface Support Buoys have aflotation core manufactured from resilientclosed cell polyethylene foam, thermolaminated around internal steelworkand encapsulated within a tough, abrasionresistant polyurethane elastomers skin.Use of a polyethylene foam core ratherthan conventional polyurethane foamensure the buoy will not absorb water evenif the skin is punctured, increasing thelifespan of the product and reducingmaintenance costs. The resilient materialmakes the buoys self fendering with a highimpact absorption capacity.

The durable and flexible polyurethaneelastomer is self coloured and does notattract marine growth. It is resistant toboth abrasion and ultra violet degradation. For extreme operating conditions the skincan be reinforced to add further strength.

Trelleborg CRP’s standard range of generalsurface support buoys is extensive startingwith a 90kg marker to 6,000 kg and largerchain support buoys.

Preparing Telemark buoy for deployment.

Market research undertaken by TrelleborgCRP indicated a requirement for cable layvessels servicing the submarinetelecommunications industry to have aflexible, user friendly, low maintenancebuoy system.

As there is limited onboard stowage, cable lay vessels need to maximise cabledeployment lengths on every trip.

Working with Global Marine Systems Ltd.,Trelleborg CRP designed, and nowmanufacture the Telemark™ modular buoy.

The Telemark™ buoy is typically used as amarker/mooring buoy where the end of thefibre optic cable is attached to the buoyallowing the cable ship to return to shore.

Upon reaching the end of the cable theposition is marked and tied and subject tothe depth of water the weight of the cableto be supported varies. The modularconstruction of the Telemark™ modularbuoy affords the crew the ability to form abuoy with suitable nett buoyancy.

The buoy is constructed fromthermolaminated, resilient polyethyleneclosed cell foam encapsulated with aprotective layer of polyurethane elastomeraround a custom designed steel column.

Buoyancy modules are added or removedfrom the steel column offering a minimumand maximum nett buoyancy value in therange of 3 – 12Te.

The buoy is manufactured with two flatsides which allow safe on deck stowageand cost effective container transportation.

Cable lay vessels can now save valuableonboard space and operate with a reducednumber of buoys – with buoyancy variationsavailable to suit ocean depths or coastal waters.

A range of smaller mini modular 1,800 -6,300kg nett buoyancy units are alsoavailable.

Deployed Telemark buoy.

Trelleborg CRP Mooring Buoys are rapidlyreplacing traditional steel mooring buoysdue to their low maintenance, selffendering resilient foam bodies and theirease of handling and repair while offshore.

The same construction method used toproduce Trelleborg CRP’s floating foamfenders (see p14) are used to produceTrelleborg CRP’s Mooring Buoys.

Resilient closed cell polyethylene foam isthermolaminated around a central tubularsteel frame forming a flexible, impactresistant flotation core. The foam core isthen coated in a high performanceelastomer skin and two flanges are weldedin position to secure the foam core firmlyin place.

Chain Through & Chain Tyre Net Floating Foam Fenders

Trelleborg CRP Foam Fenders protecting Allseas BV ‘Lorelay’ pipelay vessel.

Trelleborg CRP Foam Fenderson location in Portugal.

Trelleborg CRP chain through and chaintyre net floating fenders are specificallydesigned to withstand the high energyimpact occurring during berthing of allvessels and ship to ship transfers in opensea. A chain tyre net provides even furtherenergy absorption and protection.

Floating foam fenders are used in portsand harbours around the world and usersrange from the largest oil tankers to smallpassenger ships. Many naval vessels alsoinsist on foam fenders as they are non-marking, cannot deflate and requireminimal maintenance.

These fenders provide high energyabsorption with a low reaction force –making them superior to similar sizedpneumatic fenders.

By eliminating valves, inflation gear andconstant pressure checks, Trelleborg CRPfloating foam fenders need little or nomaintenance, making them more reliableand economical than a pneumatic model.

Trelleborg CRP fenders are constructedfrom energy absorbing polyethylene foamencapsulated within a resilientpolyurethane elastomer. The polyethylenefoam is bonded together by a continuousthermo-laminating process, eliminating theuse of adhesives which can break downunder long and arduous use.

Page 15: 255 Marine Products

13

The reinforced polyurethane elastomer skin is resistant to abrasion, ultra-violetdegradation and temperature fluctuations. If the skin of the fender is damaged, theeffect on performance is negligible. Theclosed cell foam interior will not absorbwater, therefore the fender will not sink.

The standard colour is orange for highvisibility with options for black, grey orother colours available on request. Fendersare available complete with chain tyre netor alternatively a flexible central tensionmember. Mooring assemblies includingswivels, shackles and chains are available, as is a complete installation service ifrequired.

The extensive range of standard sizesoffered is supplemented by TrelleborgCRP’s design service to produce fendersconforming to precise customerrequirements.

Trelleborg CRP’s design engineers arepleased to assist in defining the correctspecification and quantity to suit anyapplication.

Small Boat Fendering Systems

Delta’s 7.4 fast patrol craft incorporating Trelleborg CRP’s high performance lightweight Fender Collar.

‘D’ section fender.

Trelleborg CRP originally developed itsrange of small boat fenders to replace thehighly vulnerable pneumatic units used onrigid inflatable boats (RIBs).

More recently the fenders have beensupplied to replace extruded rubberfenders. A major problem in the use ofextruded rubber fendering is the resultantheavy topside weight. This problem iscompounded when, in a capsized situation, the hollow section fills with water.Trelleborg CRP therefore extended itsfendering range to replace the extrudedsections, creating a lightweightpermanently buoyant alternative which willnot absorb water.

Trelleborg CRP small boat fendering systemsare manufactured from high energy absorbingresilient closed cell polyethylene foam, encapsulated within a high performancepolyurethane elastomer skin.

The elastomer skin is often furtherreinforced with layers of fabric materials for additional performance.

GKN Westland Hovercraft supplied to the Canadian coastguard.

‘O’ section fender.

Reinforced ‘D’ section fender.

This combination of well proven materialsmeans that even in the unlikely event ofdamage to the skin the fender can neitherdeflate nor absorb water.

Trelleborg CRP’s fenders can be fixed tothe craft via a variety of methods includinggluing, bolting or wire tensioning. Theversatility of fixing combined with the rangeof profile shapes available provides perhapsthe widest range of combinations anddesigns of fendering systems availabletoday.

In comparison with pneumatic fendersmaintenance is minimal as no regular airchecks are necessary. This coupled withtheir main quality of being puncture proofmeans a cost effective and safe fenderingsystem. The guarantee of high levels ofserviceability means that Trelleborg CRPfoam fenders are often chosen for rescueboats, coastguard vessels and assault andsupport craft as used by the armed forces.

The introduction of the Fourth Edition ofthe Oil Companies International MarineForum (OCIMF 1991) specified the requiredinternal geometry of submarine hosefloats. Therefore for the first time floatsare fully interchangeable as all hosesconstructed to the OCIMF 1991specification must use standard sizecollars. Trelleborg CRP manufactures arange of submarine hose floats to complywith this specification. The designincorporates years of experience and hasbeen developed in conjunction with theworld’s leading hose manufacturers andsystem operators. The Trelleborg CRPOCIMF float is a significantly improvedproduct offering optimum durability andflexibility.

Trelleborg CRP remain the vendor of choiceover the last 15 years by many moremanufacturers and operators.

The floats are manufactured using themost advanced production methods andthe highest quality materials. TrelleborgCRP manufactures the floats from theinside out. The solid foam core ismanufactured then encapsulated in atough resilient outer polyurethane shellproducing a significantly superiorproduct.

The range comprises sevendifferent sizes, each to suit thehose size of the hose collarsspecified in the OCIMF regulations, namely 471mm, 495mm, 581mm,697mm, 799mm, 876mm and 946mm.

The floats fully comply with all otherrequirements of the OCIMF specificationincluding hose collar width, securingmetalwork specification, markings andhydrostatic pressure testing requirements.

In addition Trelleborg CRP has available awide range of pre OCIMF 1991 float designsand sizes to suit 6” to 24” bore hoses.Full details are available on request.

Floating ‘Y’ Pieces & Reducers

Trelleborg CRP Submarine Hose Floats being deployed as part of a

Single Point Mooring system. Floating ‘Y’ Piece on location at Conoco’s Tetney oil terminal.

Trelleborg CRP floating Y pieces aredesigned to split a single floating/offshoredredging hose into two. Trelleborg CRPfloating Reducers have a conically shapedprofile which is designed to reduce thediameter of an offloading hose.

They are used in conjunction with OCIMFhoses for offloading and transfer ofoil/fluid from ship to shore, forming animportant and integral part of the offshoresystem.

Both products incorporate standardpipework around which is built a buoyantlayer of resilient polyethylene foam. Thethickness of the polyethylene foam can bevaried to match any specific buoyancyrequirement. The layer is then coated withan abrasion resistant tough polyurethaneelastomer skin, resistant to marine growthand therefore ideal for long term application.

This field proven design provides a buoyantconnection well within the handlingcapabilities of tanker crews. BuoyantReducers and Y Pieces can be supplied in almost any size.

Mooring Hawser for Conoco TLP.

Trelleborg CRP manufactures a completerange of floats for umbilicals, ropes, cables, wirelines, pick-up wires and manyother applications. Floats are available forsingle and double hawser applications andcan be produced as split-type or tubular.

Hawser and umbilical floats aremanufactured from closed cell polyethylenefoam, encapsulated within a toughpolyurethane elastomer skin.

This high performance outer casing iseasily visible, resistant to ultra-violetdegradation and will provide protectionfrom abrasion and collision. The propertiesof the material are such that they combinestrength with flexibility.

Other advantages include quick and easyinstallation, and as the floats are producedin relatively short lengths, c. 1m, they canbe individually replaced or additionalflotation added cost effectively.

Diameter and length can be adjusted tosuit any particular range of buoyancyrequired. Flotation modules can be fixed ina number of different ways and strappingrecesses can be manufactured within thefloat if required. Banding and hire tools areavailable from Trelleborg CRP on request.

Hawser Flotation

To obtain the required overall length, sections of oil export hose may be securedtogether using bolted flanges. However thepresence of a flange creates a projectionwhich can snag cables used duringmooring and handling operations. Thisproblem can be avoided by fittingTrelleborg CRP flange protectors to theintermediate connections.

They comprise two profiled half shellswhich fit closely around the flange. Thehalves are secured together by a set ofmetallic fasteners resulting in a smoothand continuous external profile to the oilexport hose.

The flange protector body is moulded fromtough and resilient polyurethane elastomer.

This material is highly resistant to impactand abrasion and is relatively unaffectedby long term exposure to sea water.

The system design life will determine whichfastener material is selected. Stainlesssteel is commonly specified.

The protectors areavailable in a wide rangeof sizes to suit ASA 150and ASA 300 flanges.

Booms

19

Weir boom.

Sluice gate boom.

Canal bridge protection.

Since the mid 1980’s Trelleborg CRP hasbeen involved with the design, manufactureand supply of various styles of floatingboom arrangements.

Trelleborg CRP boom floats have beenused for the containment of oil, to createexclusion zones at sea (anti terroristbarrage for ships and other naval vessels),in lakes and rivers, to control floatingdebris and highlight areas of danger in amarine environment.

Safety booms are a robust and well provenmethod of protecting water intakes, pumping stations, level control sluices, weirs etc. from accidental boat incursions. They also help prevent boats, floatingdebris, and most importantly, people beingcarried over weirs or dragged into sluices ifthey lose power, and secure areas ofharbours or basins where traffic is notpermitted, and protect swing bridgeparapets from drifting vessels.

Trelleborg CRP floating booms are highlyvisible, can be designed to have theappropriate load carrying capacity and willgive long service with minimummaintenance.

The modular construction allows booms tobe manufactured to customer requirementsand for length and diameter adjustment tosuit particular applications. Trelleborg CRPoffers a choice of end mooringarrangements including ones which allowthe boom to raise and lower toaccommodate changing water levels.

The booms are self fendering and boatfriendly in the case of a collision. Ifrequired the booms can be provided withgrab handles to offer a temporary havenfor any person in difficulty in the water.

All components are designed to ensureinstallations can be carried out quickly andcost effectively.

Trelleborg CRP floating booms aremanufactured using a buoyant lightweightfoam core protected with an outer skin ofabrasion and impact resistant polymer. These carefully chosen materials ensurethat the booms are impact and wearresistant, UV stable and cannot absorbwater.

As the boom could potentially save livesproduct reliability is of paramountimportance and in the unlikely event of themodules being damaged the closed cellfoam core will not fill with water and fail.

Materials

Polyethylene Foam

Polyethylene foams are closed cell, flexible, resilient materials and are usedfor surface flotation, such as anchorpendant buoys, general surface buoys, rope floats and navigation buoys andfendering applications including floatingfoam fenders and small boat fenderingsystems. These foams are chemically inertand are available in a range of densitiesfrom 15kg/m3 to 175kg/m3, in both sheetand roll form and are thermo-laminated toproduce the required shape.

Polyurethane Elastomer

Trelleborg CRP uses a range of highperformance systems which have beenformulated to suit particular applicationssuch as buoy outer skin materials, floatingfoam fenders, rope floats, hose floats andmoulded solid elastomeric flangeprotectors, amongst others. Thesematerials exhibit high load bearingcapacities along with excellent fatigue andabrasion resistance.

Polyurethanes are ideal coating materialsfor both surface and subsurface buoyancy. They provide hydrolysis and UV protectionin addition to mechanical protection for thebuoyancy elements.
