Our primary motivation in the John Lewis Design Studio is to create distinct, beautiful and useful products for our customers to love and

use for many years to come. My team of 17 talented in-house Partners is the is the key to achieving this - so I’m delighted to be expanding are hiring nine new Partners across furniture, product and textile design in the coming year, to ensure that John Lewis is always able to offer its

customers beautifully designed and original pieces.

So what will be different for this season? Pattern is always an important part of our homeware collections at John Lewis, but no more so than for

AW18. From the dynamic archival patterns reimagined for The Palazzo Collection to expressive ink drawings in Design Project, or the cheeky cheetah hand painted by Amie in my team for HOUSE by John Lewis,

there is pattern aplenty to create warmth, humour and character in our homes this season.

We want our products to be useful as well as beautiful. Innovation takes time, and this season’s highlights include a new, quick-drying towelling range within the John Lewis Croft Collection made from

100% regenerated and recycled yarns, a fabulously functional shelf with a movable light, and a bedside lamp with a charge pad in Design Project.

Occasional pieces that will create a unique style statement in a home have continued to be important to us, and my highlights for this season

include the beautiful new rounded dining table in Design Project, the Harp chair designed by Simon Pengelly for Sitting Firm from our

Croft Collection, and the striking Albero Tiger’s Eye print from our archive collection within The Palazzo Collection.

THE PALAZZO COLLECTION

New for AW18, The Palazzo Collection is an edited selection of products that celebrate modern luxury.

A significant number of pieces within The Palazzo Collection draw upon the extensive John Lewis archives,

based at the Partnership’s Odney Club in Berkshire, for inspiration. The Design team visited the archive with the aim of finding unusual, eccentric, striking patterns

and designs that could be brought back to life for AW18, and the result is a series of reimagined prints that can be found across textile, decor and home accessory pieces

throughout this collection.

The collection channels a series of glamorous, 20th century influences reimagined - the distinct silhouette of the

Farrugia dining table, for example, references a particular design style of the 1930’s called ‘Streamline Moderne’ which

is characterised by soft linear architectural forms. Each piece from The Palazzo Collection draws from individual influences to create a series of pieces that would add a

degree of glamour to any interior space.

NORDIC RETREAT

A brand new trend for AW18, Nordic Retreat fuses classic Scandinavian interior style with pops of globally inspired colour and texture to create a paired back,

contemporary look and feel.

This trend highlights John Lewis’s shared values with Scandinavia - those of good design, craftsmanship and a modern approach to natural materials. The products

that make up this trend create a warm, inviting and stylish interior look and feel, and is a trend that customers can

confi dently play around with in their own homes, refl ecting the continuing trend to create spaces to dwell in.

This interior style can be translated well into both fl ats and family homes, with pieces such as chic occasional

tables and simplistic statement lighting used as versatile accent pieces.

Now in its fifth season, our in-house Design Project by John Lewis label continues to grow in popularity, with sales climbing +22% in the last year. For AW18 we are

adding over 60 new pieces that define the Design Project ambition to offer our customers beautiful,

original and progressive products.

This season Design Project continues to offer contemporary designs to endure time. The collection uses a palette of high quality materials & techniques

employing innovative methods that take up to two years to come to fruition. This season’s colours are richer and more

luxurious, with elements of emerald green and ruby red, walnut and brass.

AW18 highlights in Design Project include the No. 169 Dining Table ,a stylish piece with a strong silhouette created through bent metal legs and sculptural edge detailing that

feels reassuringly substantial to the touch.

HOUSE by John Lewis is the biggest of our three sub brands. For AW18 we have gone beyond the functionality

that HOUSE is known and loved for, and added accent colours and metallics to create uplifting, beautiful pieces

that will make you smile.

The creative direction for HOUSE this season refl ects our customer’s appetite for great style and design at

affordable prices. The collection contains a number of ‘get the look’ pieces that can quickly bring a room right up to date, such as the HOUSE by John Lewis Berber Rug,

priced at just £100.

Print and pattern is also important to HOUSE by John Lewis this season. Prints include the cheerful Cheetah, found across textiles, lighting and tabletop pieces, in a

design that was originally hand drawn by Amie from the in-house Design Studio.

Following a big update last season, for AW18 Croft Collection is heavily inspired by the change in season and makes use of darker, moodier colours and more tactile materials to create a cosy Autumnal feel. The Croft values of authenticity, provenance and quality remain central to product development this season, with pieces enjoying

the mark of the maker’s touch and using natural materials wherever possible.

This season we have built upon the pared back simplicity that Croft Collection is known for by adding stylish accent

pieces, such as the Frome Bench, designed by Dan Rawlings from our in-house team. We are also proud

of our designer collaborations for the Croft Collection, and for AW18 we are introducing a striking new chair by Simon Pengelly made by Sitting Firm in the UK, as well as

a number of new glazes for our ceramics collection designed by Stuart Carey.
